Dubawi Colt Is New Tattersalls Topper At 2.1-Million Gns

Anthony Stroud had gone to 1.1-million gns on behalf of Godolphin early in the first session of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for a Frankel (GB) colt out of Attraction (GB) from Floors Stud. The same agent went back to that source when outbidding Coolmore for the sale’s second millionaire, a Dubawi (Ire) colt from Floors Stud out of Attraction’s Grade III-winning daughter Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), for a new sale-topping 2.1-million gns. Coolmore co-bred the colt with Floors Stud. Attraction’s son and grandson are thus far the only seven-figure lots midway through day one.

BOLTAWAY (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) debuts for Khalid Abdullah and Roger Charlton and is the fourth foal out of the four-time Grade I heroine Proviso (GB) (Dansili {GB}). The February-foaled colt, whose family features the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. hero Byword (GB) (Peintre Celebre), has a smart rival with experience to overcome in Shadwell’s Moktasaab (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), a 500,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 graduate who is an Owen Burrows-trained half-brother to the G1 Prix Jean Romanet and G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal).

Ultra’s Half-Brother Debuts At Newmarket

QUINTILLUS (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) debuts for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby and is a half-brother to the operation’s G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}). Among his rivals is the similarly-unraced Sir Michael Stoute project Wahraan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred whose dam is a 1.5million gns full-sister to the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

4.50 Newcastle, Novice, £5,300, 2yo f, 7f 14y (AWT)
BRUNNERA (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the second foal out of the G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Romantica (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who is herself a daughter of the brilliant Banks Hill (GB) (Danehill). Hugo Palmer has charge of Juddmonte’s regally-bred bay, who is one of a dozen runners on the Tapeta.

5.15 Dundalk, Mdn, €14,000, 2yo, f, 7f (AWT)
MEHNAH (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a homebred half-sister to Shadwell’s G1 Irish 2000 Guineas-winning first-season sire Awtaad (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who also races for the Kevin Prendergast stable. The May-foaled bay faces some experienced rivals who set a decent standard in what could prove an informative maiden.

Flat Breeders Honoured At Virtual Event

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association gave out 10 awards during a virtual edition of its Flat Breeders’ Awards Evening on Thursday.

Godolphin won four: the Queen’s Silver Cup for leading British-based breeder by prize money; the BBA Silver Cigar Box for leading British-based stallion by prize money (Dubawi {Ire}); the Barleythrope Stud Silver Cup for leading British-based stallion by individual winners (Dubawi); and the inaugural British European Breeders’ Fund Stallion Special Merit Award for Night Of Thunder (Ire).

European Breeders’ Fund Marketing Communications Manager Rachael Gowland said, “Night Of Thunder stood in Great Britain for two seasons and a significant portion of his winners and stakes horses have been in Great Britain. As a mid-price-range stallion, he caught breeders’ attention with a significant winners to runners percentage driven by talented offspring rather than sheer weight of numbers in 2019. The award is in its infancy and still developing but ultimately its purpose is to help showcase high-achieving stallions irrespective of book size and nomination fee.”

Cable Bay was awarded the Tattersalls Silver Salver as leading first-crop sire in 2019 by prizemoney; Dar Re Mi recorded back-to-back wins as Broodmare of the Year; Newsells Park Stud was Flat Breeder of the Year; Mick and Fiona Denniff received the TBA Silver Salver for Special Merit; and Bearstone Stud the Small Flat Breeder of the Year award. Jacques Prinsloo of Whitsbury Manor Stud received the Stud Employee Award.

TBA Chairman Julian Richmond-Watson said, “Although we have been unable to host our usual event, we are delighted to be able to recognise the achievements of British breeders from the 2019 flat racing season. My congratulations go to all of the nominees, winners and their supporting teams who have demonstrated such dedication to our industry. I would also like to thank all of our event supporters and sponsors this year for continuing their contribution to the British breeding industry.”

Weatherbys Chairmain Johnny Weatherby said, “We are absolutely delighted to support the TBA’s Flat Breeders’ Awards, and as a small breeder myself I am fully aware of the challenges that we all face, particularly in the current climate, and I whole heartedly congratulate this evening’s winners.”
