Team Ladies The Big Winners In The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

Team Ladies accumulated 78 point to just edge Team Rest of the World by five points to take the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday.

Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne each rode two winners on the day, and Doyle scored points with each of her five rides, resulting in her first Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle, awarded to the day's leading rider. Her points total for the day stands at 48.

After winning with The Very Man (Ire) (Jeremy) and Regal Empire (Ire) (Farhh {GB}) in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers and the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic respectively, Doyle said, “I haven't won the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle before, so it's great to have that on my CV. I got to ride in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup first when I was an apprentice, and it let me showcase myself on a wider stage internationally.

“I rode a winner for Clive Cox and I ended up riding out and had quite a few winners for him–I actually rode him a listed winner–so something really did come of that opportunity, and I think it is important in that regard. It's a very good meeting and Ascot do a great job.”

Osborne was successful aboard Scampi (GB) (Nayef) in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge and Dark Trooper (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint. Hayley Turner, the most successful jockey in the history of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, captained the Ladies Team but was unable to add to her cumulative 322 points.

She said, “It has been good fun again and it is nice to have all the family here. This has been the best Ladies team we have ever had–I did not get any points at all and they carried me. It has been great fun and I hope I can do this for many years.”

Kazuo Yokoyama won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Dash with Rogue Lightning (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), which helped boost Team Rest of the World to second with 73 points. Perotto (GB) (New Bay {GB}), with Thore Hammer Hansen aboard, won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile with Team Europe accumulating 54 points. Team Great Britain and Ireland was fourth with 35 points.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said, “It has been another brilliant Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, with the competition going all the way to the final race. It was fantastic to see Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle winner Hollie Doyle and debutante Saffie Osborne ride doubles to land the competition for the Ladies, their fourth success in the last eight renewals.

“We were also thrilled to see international success for Kazuo Yokoyama, which will have been hugely popular in Japan, and delighted that Thore Hammer Hansen rode a winner after stepping in so late in the day.

“Andrew Balding takes home £12,500 for his yard as the leading trainer on the day and, once again, we are hugely grateful to all the trainers and owners for supporting this unique event. There has been more than £500,000 on offer to participants today, which we wouldn't be able to do without the sponsors Dubai Duty Free, so a huge thanks goes to them for their continued to long-standing support.”

Captain Dettori Steps Up For Shergar Cup

In his final year of riding, Frankie Dettori will captain the European team at Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Twelve jockeys from eight countries will take part in the unique team contest, with Dettori set to be joined by Olivier Peslier and Kazakh-born Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, the multiple champion jockey in Germany who is now stable jockey to Andre Fabre.

“The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is always a fun event and I was keen to be involved in my final year riding,” said Dettori.

“Ascot does an excellent job attracting some of the biggest names from around the world, while the prize-money and incentives for owners, trainers and stable staff are fantastic. I like the look of our team. Myself and Olivier were on the winning side in 2014 and hopefully we can repeat the feat this year.”

The GB & Ireland team consists of captain Luke Morris, Tom Marquand and Declan McDonogh, while Hayley Turner, the most successful rider at the Shergar Cup, will be joined by Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne on the Ladies team.

Hong Kong star Vincent Ho returns as captain of Rest of the World, and is joined by Brazil's Joao Moreira and Kazuo Yokoyama, a multiple Group 1 winner in Japan.

With owners benefiting from free entry for their horses, each race at the Shergar Cup is worth £80,000, with prize-money down to 10th place. There is a further £25,000 available in bonuses split between the day's three leading trainers and their staff.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot, said, “With the continued support of Dubai Duty Free, we are delighted to unveil one of our strongest and most varied lineups of jockeys for this year's Shergar Cup.

“Frankie is captaining Europe as part of his farewell tour, while it's great to welcome back Vincent Ho, who has made such an impression when riding in the UK previously.

“We are also excited to have Joao Moreira pencilled in for his third Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup appearance, in what could be his final year in the saddle. There will be debuts for Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, Luke Morris, Tom Marquand, Saffie Osborne and Kazuo Yokoyama.

“Of course, no Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup would be complete without Hayley Turner, who has such a tremendous record at Ascot and is synonymous with this event.”

Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Dubai Duty Free, added, “Once again the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will deliver a line-up of international stars who will have the opportunity to shine on one of horseracing's greatest stages.

“I am delighted that Frankie has chosen the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup as one of his final showcase events in the UK and we can expect the competition to be as fierce as ever.”

Great Britain And Ireland Take The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup went to Team Great Britain and Ireland at Ascot on Saturday. They earned 132 points and won five of the eight races. Second in the standings was the Ladies' Team at 81 points, with Team Rest of the World at 72 points and Team Europe at 51 points.

Jockey Neil Callan, part of the winning team, was awarded the Alistair Haggas Silver Saddle Award after riding two winners on the day–Orbaan (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises Classified S. and Adaay In Asia (GB) (Adaay {Ire}) in the nightcap, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint.

Callan said, “There is nothing to dislike about the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, it is brilliant. There is great prize-money and Ascot make it a family event to come and watch. It is a great day at our premier track and the fields are competitive.

“This is my third time and I have been on the winning team every year, so I am going to have to retire now. And it is great to have my family here.

“I have ridden with a lot of the international jockeys here over the years, all over the world. It is nice to ride against them on a competitive stage.

“The whole concept is great. Look how much coverage there is and people come to watch–it is not just racing people, and betting and punting and all that, it is families here with kids. They are the next generation–this is what we need to be pushing towards.”

The Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award went to Joanna Mason for her victory on Amanzoe (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the first race of the day, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Curtain Raiser Classified S.

The Ladies' Team representative said, “The whole day has just been amazing and there has been good team morale. It's an honour to be picked to represent the girls and we have given it our best shot. We thought we would have a really good chance today and we have come second, so everyone has done themselves proud. We have won three races and done well.

“I have loved the team side of it, too, it adds a different dimension. To get the chance to ride with some famous and well-known jockeys when you never would normally–Emma-Jayne Wilson, who is a sensation in Canada, Kerrin McEvoy, Christophe Lemaire. And to get my first winner at Ascot, on a Saturday–I am loving it.”
