Breeders’ Cup CEO Drew Fleming Named to Sports Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 List

Breeders' Cup President and Chief Executive Officer Drew Fleming was named to Sports Business Journal's 2022 40 Under 40 Class. The 40 Under 40 list is a prestigious annual recognition of the best young talent in sports business from across the United States. Fleming's inclusion on this year's list marks the first time an executive working in the sport of horse racing has ever been named a Sports Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree. The 2022 awardees will be honored Tuesday, Nov. 15 at a celebration in New York City.

“Drew's strong and steady leadership at the Breeders' Cup and his work across the racing industry over the last several years have been incredibly impactful and beneficial to our sport,” said Barbara Banke, Chairman of the Breeders' Cup Limited Board of Directors. “I'm so proud that he is being recognized and honored for his contributions not only to racing, but to the entire sports industry. Drew is a wonderful ambassador for our sport, and I look forward to the Breeders' Cup's bright future under his leadership.”

During his tenure as President and CEO of the Breeders' Cup, Fleming has significantly increased international participation in the World Championships, and has expanded the global presence of the Breeders' Cup to additional broadcast outlets. He also led the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic and navigated the Breeders' Cup through regulatory changes that seek to prioritize safety and integrity as the industry continues to modernize.

Keeneland Begins Countdown to Breeders’ Cup

Keeneland began its official countdown to this year's Breeders' Cup at Tandy Park in Lexington Thursday at a ceremony attended by Breeders' Cup President and CEO Drew Fleming, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin, Breeders' Cup Festival Chair Kip Cornett, and GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic winning trainer Brad Cox.

“We're excited to officially begin our countdown to the 39th running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships this fall in our hometown of Lexington,” said Fleming. “We're so grateful to work alongside leaders like Mayor Gorton, our friends at Keeneland, and so many others throughout the Lexington community to ensure that this year's World Championships and Festival are the best in Breeders' Cup history.”

Keeneland will be hosting championship weekend for the third time in 2022. It was first held at the Lexington oval in 2015 and returned in 2020.

“Lexington is excited to step back into the international spotlight as we again host the Breeders' Cup,” Gorton said. “This year, the Breeders' Cup will crown racing's true champions in the Horse Capital of the World at the best track in the world, Keeneland. Join us for a celebration that our international visitors and our local residents will enjoy.”

Arvin added, “Keeneland is excited to kick off the countdown to Breeders' Cup this fall, and to share this great international championship with our fans. The Thoroughbred industry is so important to the Lexington community, and we thank our friends at Breeders' Cup, Mayor Gorton and leaders throughout the city for their enthusiasm and support. We look forward to welcoming fans and racing participants from around the world to Lexington to celebrate the Breeders' Cup in a way this event richly deserves.”

Tickets for the 2022 Breeders' Cup at Keeneland will go on sale to the public May 9, at Noon ET at BreedersCup.com/Tickets. Attendance will be capped at 45,000. Fans who purchased 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championship tickets, when the event was impacted by the pandemic, were able to repurchase the same or similar seats for 2022. The Breeders' Cup Ticketing office has contacted 2020 purchasers about how to secure seats at the 2022 World Championships. 2020 ticket purchasers who have not yet received communication from the Breeders' Cup Ticketing office should email tickets@breederscup.com or call (859) 514-9428.

Record Handle For 38th Breeders’ Cup

Total all-sources common-pool handle for the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club was $182,908,409, a new record for the two-day event.

The total represents a 4.7% increase over the prior record of $174,628,986 set when the event was held at Santa Anita Park in 2019 and a 14% increase from the total handle of $160,472,893 at the 2020 event held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, KY.

Total common-pool handle on Saturday's 12-race Breeders' Cup card was a record $121,562,392. All sources common-pool handle on Breeders' Cup's 10-race Future Stars Friday card was $61,346,017, also a new record for a Breeders' Cup Friday. This is the fourth consecutive year that Breeders' Cup grouped all its juvenile races together on Friday.

“We had an extraordinary two days of racing showcasing the best Thoroughbreds from around the world and we want to thank our partners here at Del Mar, who did an amazing job, and the greater San Diego community, our gracious hosts this week,” said Breeders' Cup President and CEO Drew Fleming. “The Breeders' Cup is a truly global event with winners this weekend bred, raised and raced on three different continents.”

On-track handle for the two days was $19,032,307, while on-track attendance for the two days was 47,089. Due to precautions related to COVID-19, Breeders' Cup and Del Mar reduced ticket capacity for the 2021 event.

“Our team at Del Mar was thrilled to host this year's renewal of the Breeders' Cup,” said Josh Rubinstein, Del Mar's President and Chief Operating Officer. “We want to extend our congratulations to all of this weekend's participants. They put on an amazing display of world-class competition.”

The Breeders Cup World Championships will return to Keeneland in 2022.
