Japan: Six Undefeated Colts Among 18 Contenders For Asahi Hai Futurity

It's the turn of the colts this coming Sunday, when Hanshin Racecourse once again stages a Grade 1, with the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes run over a mile on the outer turf course at the Kansai track. It'll be the 73rd running of the race for 2-year-olds, with the exclusion of geldings, and the colts carry an allotted weight of 55kg.

This year sees 19 nominations for a maximum 18 runner field, and just to show the competition involved, six of the nominated horses are unbeaten in their short careers so far.

The winner's purse this year is JPY 70 million (about US$610,000). The race is timed to start at 15:40 Japan time, and will be Race 11 on the Sunday card at Hanshin.

Here's a look at some of the horses bidding for a win in the race:

Serifos: Trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida won the race last year with Grenadier Guards, and while leading the trainers' table this year, he sends out this unbeaten colt by Daiwa Major here, who has won both the Grade 3 Niigata Nisai Stakes and the Grade 2 Daily Hai Nisai Stakes, as well as one other race in the three times he's been to the races. Visiting jockey Cristian Demuro has been booked for the ride, and the horse looks sure to be one of the favorites, as he tries to keep his unbeaten record intact. Serifos runs in the colors of the G1 Racing Co. Ltd.

Geoglyph: There's no doubting the potential of the chestnut colt by Drefong, who came home a four-length winner in the Grade 3 Sapporo Nisai Stakes over 1,800 meters (1 1/8 miles) at Sapporo in September. He won his only other race on his debut at Tokyo in June, also winning over 1,800 meters.

Assistant trainer Yu Ota said: “He ran well in the Sapporo Nisai Stakes, even though he was a bit too relaxed. Returning from the farm recently, he looks sharp, and the jockey reports the horse to be in good shape in training. With two wins over 1,800 meters, there shouldn't be any problem over a mile.”

Geoglyph looks set to be ridden by Christophe Lemaire, who has ridden the colt in both his starts to date.

Danon Scorpion: Another unbeaten colt, the son of Lord Kanaloa is coming off a win in the Hagi Stakes over 1,800 meters at Hanshin in October, and won his other race on his debut in June, also at Hanshin, over the course and distance of the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. Step by step, he looks good for a shot at a Grade 1, and in a recent piece of work at Ritto on the woodchip course under race jockey Kohei Matsuyama, he posted a six furlong time of 81.9 seconds, with a final furlong time of 11.7 seconds, his third time to clock under 12 seconds in recent trackwork. The horse was bred at K.I. Farm and is trained by Takayuki Yasuda.

Dobune: The colt by Deep Impact was purchased for quite a sum at the 2021 Chiba Thoroughbred Sale, and has got his career off to a good start, winning both his races since September, the latest being the Kikyo Stakes over 1,400 meters at Chukyo in October, after winning a 1,500-meter race on his debut at Sapporo. He's trained by Koshiro Take, and the trainer recently said: “He's an intelligent horse and knows a lot already, as well as being quite relaxed. He can certainly take on a Grade 1 with the ability he shows, although he will need to run to his best.” Jockey Hayato Yoshida looks set for the ride on Dobune.

Do Deuce: Trainer Yasuo Tomomichi and jockey Yutaka Take team up here with the Heart's Cry colt, who is out of the American bred mare Dust and Diamonds, who in turn is from a strong line of other American bred horses. Do Deuce won on his debut at Kokura in September, and since then has won his only other race, the Listed Ivy Stakes over 1,800 meters at Tokyo in October. He's developing the right way, and has been working well, if only lightly, on the woodchip course at Ritto, as he also aims to stay unbeaten in the big race on Sunday.

“He's a horse with a lot of power and has good racing sense. He showed what a good finish he has when winning the Ivy Stakes last time,” said the trainer recently.

Otaru Ever: A confirmed frontrunner in what he's shown so far, the striking dark bay colt by Leontes cuts quite a dash when he's out in front, racing in the green and white checked colors of owner Ikuko Sumitani. He finished third in the Grade 3 Niigata Nisai Stakes, behind Serifos, over 1,600 meters in August, and he led all the way to win the Shumeigiku Sho over 1,400 meters last time at Hanshin in November. He's already repaying some of the JPY 45 million he cost at the 2020 Select Sale, and he's an interesting entry here.

Drefong Colt Lands First Blow on Japan Road to the Derby

The first crop of foals sired by Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Drefong (Gio Ponti) have performed so well since 2-year-old racing in Japan began in early June that he has seen his covering fee bumped from ¥3 million (about $26,400) to ¥7 million (about $61,700) for the 2022 breeding season. Consigliere (Jpn) has done his part to help cement his sire's footing on the competitive Japanese breeding landscape and ran his record to two wins from as many starts with a neck defeat of Cafe Karma (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) in Saturday's Cattleya S. (allowance) at Tokyo Racecourse, the first of four races on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Having graduated by 9 1/2 lengths going 1800 meters at Niigata in his lone previous appearance Aug. 22, the bay was favored at 7-10 and jumped fairly for Christophe Lemaire, then settled in a position slightly better than midfield as OBS March topper Clos de Mesnil (Practical Joke) speared through to make the running. Allowed to creep a bit closer on the turn, the Kazumi Yoshida colorbearer loomed up four wide at the top of the long Tokyo straight, was held together into the final furlong and a half and held sway late as 21-1 Cafe Karma dove at him to make a race of it (see below, SC 10). Geraldo Barows (Jpn) (Sinister Minister) was a further neck away in third, while second choice World Connector (Connect) was a meritorious fourth.

Consigliere, one of 22 first-crop winners for Drefong, is a half-brother to the Japanese SW & GSP Esmeraldina (Harlan's Holiday) and his dam Tasha's Star (Spanish Steps) is a half-sister to MGSW & GISP Tasha's Miracle (Harlan's Holiday). Tasha's Star did not produce a foal in 2020 and is the dam of a weanling filly by Shadai's two-time G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1200mT) hero Kinshasa no Kiseki (Aus).

A total of 17 Kentucky Derby points (10-4-2-1) were awarded Saturday. The series continues in the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun at Kawasaki on the NAR circuit Dec. 15.

Epiphaneia Leads Shadai 2022 Roster

Following more Classic success, this time with his son Efforia (Jpn) in 2021, Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S)'s fee has increased to ¥18,000,000 (£117,174/€139,172/$156,021), tops of the Shadai Stallion Station 2022 roster. The 11-year-old also celebrated group winners Aristoteles (Jpn) and Circle of Life (Jpn). Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), the sire of Japanese Horse of the Year Almond Eye (Jpn), remains at ¥15,000,000. Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})'s fee has been raised to ¥12,000,000 on the back of 11 2021 black-type winners including G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup heroine Akai Ito (Jpn). Another Shadai stallion to see his fee increase is Drefong (Gio Ponti), who will stand for ¥7,000,000, after his Geoglyph (Jpn) won the G3 Sapporo Nisai S. and he had another pair of runners gain black-type placings.

A trio of exciting newcomers will cover their first mares at Shadai in 2022–2020 Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), G1 2000 Guineas hero Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), and 2019 Japanese Champion Dirt Horse and G1 Champions Cup winner Chrysoberyl (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}). Fees for Poetic Flare and Chrysoberyl have been set at ¥6,000,000 and ¥3,000,000, respectively. Contrail's fee will be announced after his run in Sunday's G1 Japan Cup.

Responsible for the G1 Victoria Derby victor Hitotsu (Aus), Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn})'s fee has been reduced to ¥7,000,000. That is the same price that Japanese Classic winners Rey de Oro (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) will command, with the former having first yearlings in 2022 and the latter welcomes his first foals next year. 2019 U.S. Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway), whose first foals are yearlings in 2022, will hold court for ¥6,000,000. The last son of Sunday Silence on the Shadai roster, Daiwa Major (Jpn), will stand for a private fee.

First Stakes Winner For Drefong as Geoglyph Dominates in Japan

The G3 Sapporo Nisai S. featured nine juveniles, but it was the June 26 debut winner Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) who was the star of the show on Saturday, drawing off to win by four lengths.

The first black-type winner for his GI Breeders' Cup Sprint-winning sire, the even-money favourite hopped slightly at the start and was last entering the first turn. Tucked in behind as Top Cast (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) cut out the early running, pilot Christophe Lemaire kept the chestnut in touch with his foes and began to make up some ground as the pacesetter covered five furlongs in 1:00.30.

Geoglyph's rallying rush continued on the far turn and he had moved up to fourth with a quarter-mile yet to travel. The Sunday Racing colourbearer came charging three deep into the lane, took command and skipped away to win as much the best. Ask Wild More (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) closed to take second four lengths back and 1 ½ lengths to the good of fellow closer Tosen Vanno (Jpn) (Vanquish Run {Jpn}).

Pedigree Notes

Drefong, named Eclipse Champion Sprinter Stateside in 2016 and a three-time Grade I winner, has 78 foals from his first crop that are 2-year-olds of 2021. The son of dual Eclipse Champion Grass Horse (2009/2010) and 2009 Eclipse Champion Older Horse Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat) stands at Shadai Stallion Station.

The fourth foal and runner from his dam, the G1 Shuka Sho and G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. third Aromatico (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), Geoglyph is the third winner and first black-type scorer. Since foaling Geoglyph, she has a yearling colt by Epiphaneia (Jpn) and a weanling filly by Harbinger (GB) to her credit. Aromatico is out of the Sunday Silence mare Nasca (Jpn), who is a half-sister to MGSW Inti Raimi (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}); Group 3 hero San Valentin (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}); SW Over the Wall (Jpn) (Dr Devious {Ire}); and the winning dam of MGSW Albert (Jpn) (Admire Don {Jpn}).
