Abdullah’s Family “Very Committed” To Juddmonte

It will be business at usual at Juddmonte Farms after Juddmonte Group Chief Executive Douglas Erskine Crum told ITV on Saturday that there will be “no change” following the death of the global operation’s founder Prince Khalid Abdullah last week.

Abdullah had raced 118 Group or Grade I winners since entering the game just over 40 years ago, of which he bred 102 of those. He owned stud farms in the UK, Ireland and Kentucky.

“The family has been for some time and still is very committed to keeping Juddmonte as it is going, focusing on the broodmare band, focusing on the homebred operation,” Erskine Crum told ITV Racing. “One of the last decisions in which the prince was involved was the matings for this year, in other words where his 200-odd broodmares are going to go. Whether they are going to go to Frankel, Kingman or some of the great stallions across the world.

“And those horses will be born next year and will race as 3-year-olds in 2025, so if we have a champion in 2025 you will be able to say the prince was actually involved directly in the decision making.

“Juddmonte will continue. Continuity is key for any breeding and racing operation. Of course things change and indeed the prince made some fairly substantial changes in the number of broodmares six or seven years ago, but those changes are necessary to keep the business running and also necessary to make sure that essential continuity of the broodmare is enhanced.”

Juddmonte Farms Owner Prince Khalid Bin Abdullah Al Saud Dies

It is with great sadness that Juddmonte announces the death of His Highness Prince Khalid bin Abdullah. He died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

One of the greatest ever owner/breeders in the history of the thoroughbred, his famous green, pink and white silks were carried by such immortals as Frankel, Dancing Brave, Arrogate and Enable. His colours were carried to victory by over 500 stakes winners, of which he bred over 440, including 118 Group/Grade 1 winners, of which he bred 102.

Douglas Erskine Crum, CEO Juddmonte, said: “The whole of Juddmonte feels a huge sense of loss. Prince Khalid will always be remembered as a quiet, dignified, benevolent family man, whose horses spoke for him.

“He leaves a legacy that will stand the test of time. His contribution to the development of the thoroughbred will have long-lasting effects.”

International Superstar Enable Retired, To Be Bred To Kingman

Enable, Europe's Horse of the Year in 2017 and 2019, has been retired from racing, and she will be bred to Kingman for the 2021 breeding season.

Douglas Erskine Crum, CEO Juddmonte Farms, said: “After consulting her trainer John Gosden and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, Prince Khalid has decided that Enable will be retired from racing and will now join the Juddmonte broodmare band to be covered by Kingman in 2021.”

She retires from a 19-race career, spanning five seasons, with 15 wins, including 11 Group 1 races and record earnings for a European-trained horse of £10.7 million (US$14,062,824). Enable is most successful performer ever in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with two wins and a second, an unprecedented three King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and five Oaks (Epsom in race record time, Irish, Yorkshire twice, and Cheshire). She is the only horse to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year, achieving that feat in 2018

Enable, a 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel, was named Europe's Cartier Horse of the Year in 2017 and 2019. The Juddmonte homebred was named Europe's champion 3-year-old filly in 2017, then earned the continent's champion older female title in 2018 and 2019.

Juddmonte racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: “She has brought so much joy to everyone who has been involved with her. Her elegance and forceful personality have been nurtured by John and his team at Clarehaven, especially by Imran who has looked after her with such calm and devotion. In her, Frankie found a willing partner to execute her ability on the racecourse. Her CV withstands the closest of inspections, very few can match what she has given to racing.”

Kingman, who also raced as a Juddmonte homebred, is a 9-year-old son of Invincible Spirit who stands at Barnstead Manor Stud in Suffolk, England.

He was named Europe's Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male in 2014 off a campaign that included G1 victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St. James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard – Jacques Le Marois.

Kingman's most notable runners include St. James's Palace Stakes winner Palace Pier and French 2,000 Guineas winner Persian King.

Juddmonte New Sponsor of Irish Oaks

Juddmonte will sponsor the G1 Irish Oaks for the next three years, The Curragh announced via Horse Racing Ireland on Wednesday. The 2020 edition is slated for Saturday, July 18. The distinctive pink, green and white silks have been first past the post three times in the fillies’ Classic-Wemyss Bight (GB) (Dancing Brave) in 1993, Bolas (GB) (Unfuwain) in 1994 and Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) took the 2017 edition. In 2020, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s operation will be represented by homebred fillies G1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile victress Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Pocket Square (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}). Both of Aidan O’Brien’s 1000 Guineas winners–Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the English and Peaceful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Irish equivalent–are also set to line up.
