Frankel’s Adayar In Doncaster Comeback Cruise

He's back. Godolphin's 2021 Derby and King George hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) enjoyed what was an exercise gallop with prize money at Doncaster on Thursday as he marked his low-key comeback in the 10-furlong Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Conditions S. with a cruise around Town Moor. Settled last of the trio early by William Buick, the 2-7 favourite moved to Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) with ease two out and without any prompting bulldozed that rival by 3 3/4 lengths. “You are always a bit apprehensive after so much time off, but full credit to the team as they've done a great job,” Charlie Appleby said. “You just hope he's still got the enthusiasm for it and that was a perfect gallop for him there. The decision as to whether to go to the Arc or Champion Stakes will be made another day but I didn't want him to have a hard race there as he would be going into either as pretty much his first run of the year and I want to avoid the bounce. To be honest, I've worked him harder at home–he enjoyed himself around there.”

Dubawi’s Mimikyu Wins The Park Hill

Providing a timely boost to Saturday's St Leger protagonist Haskoy (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), George Strawbridge's Mimikyu (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) dominated Thursday's G2 Coral Park Hill Fillies' S. at Doncaster. Only seventh behind that Juddmonte homebred in the Aug. 18 Listed Galtres S. at York, the 13-2 shot raced in last early with Frankie Dettori happy to track the 6-4 favourite Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}). As that rival went stand's side at the top of the straight, the John and Thady Gosden-trained 3-year-old stayed up the centre and produced a surge to overhaul the Shadwell runner passing two out en route to a 2 3/4-length success, with Eshaada's stablemate Believe In Love (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) another two lengths behind in third.

Muhaarar’s Polly Pott In May Hill Upset

There was a surprise in store in Thursday's G2 Cazoo May Hill S. at Doncaster as The Megsons' 21,000gns Book 2 bargain Polly Pott (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) registered a 40-1 success for the soon-to-be-retired Harry Dunlop. In an outcome almost scripted by the racing gods, the winner of nurseries at Nottingham and Salisbury last month burst some bubbles as she swooped from rear under Danny Tudhope. Taking the measure of Novakai (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) from the furlong pole, the bay readily asserted to upstage that rival by 1 1/2 lengths, with another outsider Perfect Prophet (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) outrunning her odds of 50-1 in third, three lengths away. The 5-4 favourite Dance In The Grass (GB) (Cracksman {GB}) was only seventh.

Dunlop, who is the most notable of those recently announcing their departure from the training ranks, has enjoyed a purple patch since his shock announcement with the useful filly Adaay In Asia (GB) (Adaay {Ire}) winning at the Goodwood and Ebor festivals and at the Shergar Cup. “What this filly has is she's tough and hardy,” the son of the late legend John said. “It's surreal really. I've only got 12 horses and they're running well. We're lucky enough to have horses like this and it's very hard when you haven't got them, but you've got to enjoy them when you do get one. She cost 21,000 guineas and you're taking on these smartly-bred fillies that cost half a million. I think Ben Pauling is going to train her next year. Wherever she goes, I think she'll be a tough cookie and will probably stay a mile and a half I would think.”

Starting her career masquerading as a sprinter, Polly Pott was beaten into seventh on debut at Newbury May 31 and fourth at Lingfield June 13 before taking a Bath maiden over five furlongs and 160 yards on ground officially described as firm at the venue famed for its lack of a watering system July 12. Upped almost three furlongs for her first nursery at Nottingham Aug. 4, the bay made light work of the contrasting examination before coming back 15 days later to double up at Salisbury. Relishing the easier surface here, she could be called the winner some way out with no hint of fluke.

“She has got better and better, but I didn't expect that,” Dunlop added. “She's rated 75, this is a group two and she's won four on the bounce now, so it's fantastic. We've got to run her in a group one now, I suppose. Maybe the Fillies' Mile, why not? I'm really pleased for all my team at home. Obviously in my personal circumstances it's a great sending off and I think someone is looking down–it's quite emotional.”

The winner's dam Must Be Me (GB) (Trade Fair {GB}), whose daughter of Showcasing (GB) was a prescient £60,000 purchase by Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock at last month's Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, hails from a classy family with her dam being the listed-placed Roodeye (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). Among the progeny of Roodeye, who is a half to the G1 Prix Morny runner-up Gallagher (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}), is Showcasing's star miler Mohaather (GB), Shadwell's hero of the G1 Sussex S., G2 Summer Mile and G3 Greenham S.

Roodeye also produced Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), who captured the GII Monrovia S. and GII San Clemente H. and was third in the GI Del Mar Oaks before throwing Ballydoyle's 2.8million gns Book 1 sensation History (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who took this year's G3 Cornelscourt S. Roodeye's daughter Roodle (GB) (Xaar {GB}) staked her own claim to fame when producing the G1 Queen Anne S. hero Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}) and the Listed Hyde S. scorer Madame Tantzy (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}).

All Eyes On Doncaster

It may be the least lauded of all the British festivals, but Doncaster's St Leger meeting is arguably the most varied with its cherished feature race still held in the highest regard by its many ardent fans. While Town Moor hosted day one of the festival on Wednesday, the relatively low-key action served mainly as a prologue or appetizer to the major upcoming events. Perhaps this week's jewels are the 2-year-old races, which lean more towards next year's Classics than those at Ascot, Newmarket, Goodwood and York and one of which serves as the main focus on Thursday. Aside from the G2 Cazoo May Hill S. over a mile for the juvenile fillies, there is the G2 Coral Park Hill Fillies' S., or the “Fillies' St Leger” as it was always known, and also the small matter of the reappearance of Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

First Dance

What the May Hill always needs is an unbeaten filly apparently on the march to the Classics and Jaber Abdullah's Dance In The Grass (GB) (Cracksman {GB}) fits the bill, having mastered the subsequent G3 Prestige S. winner Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Sandown's Listed Star S. July 21. The likes of Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) took this with similar profiles in recent times and this test will tell us which way the Charlie and Mark Johnston trainee will go. One who comes from the other end of the experience spectrum is the Tom Clover-trained Crystallium (GB) (Expert Eye {GB}), a granddaughter of the Lloyd-Webber's G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Crystal Music (Nureyev) who impressed on her winning debut over seven at Chelmsford Aug. 25. Bought for a mere 22,000gns at the Book 2 Sale, she was unsold at 28,000gns at the Craven Breeze-Up but has obviously made giant strides in the interim. “She is an exciting prospect and has shaped up well in her work at home,” Clover said. “I wouldn't run her on quick ground and I wouldn't run her on heavy ground, but I think she'll be fine on ground in between.” Also on the card is the £300,000 Weatherbys Scientific £300,000 2-Y-O S., where Amo Racing Limited's exciting filly Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) is in action having beaten the subsequent TDN Rising Star Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in what could turn out to be an important Windsor maiden Aug. 15.

Success Breeds Success

It has been another mixed week for Shadwell, but few among Sheikha Hissa's organisation have any reason to complain about their overall racing fates in 2022 and the Park Hill sees another great opportunity for the blue-and-white. Last year's G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares S. heroine Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) is back on her favoured easier ground again with another potentially profitable autumn ahead and holds a distinct class edge over all her exposed rivals here. The exception could be Woodford Thoroughbreds' 3-year-old filly River Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), an unknown quantity who put the Belmont Gold Cup winner Loft (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in his place in the Aug. 20 Listed Chester S.

Welcome Back

For all that the current flat campaign can safely be categorised as above-average, the one star it has been missing all along is Godolphin's 2021 Derby and King George hero Adayar. Doncaster's 10-furlong Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Conditions S. is the stage for his keenly-anticipated comeback, not the Coronation Cup or Prince of Wales's or King George as was expected at varying stages of the season, but for those who revelled in his barnstorming performances last summer it matters little. The fact is, the one horse who could light up the autumn like none other than Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is here and under race conditions once again. There is still time for the imposing bay to make a serious impact this year and this is more about how he goes through the race rather than whether he has the class to easily dispose of Mick and Janice Mariscotti's often-disappointing Derby fourth Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir). Sir Henry Cecil brought a low-on-confidence Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) here in 2009 and two starts later he was winning the Champion S., so that is welcome precedent.

Making Waves At ParisLongchamp

At ParisLongchamp, the G3 Prix d'Aumale sees the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Left Sea (GB) (Frankel {GB}) meet some intriguing rivals but the manner of the performance of the Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained daughter of Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on her Deauville debut Aug. 18 suggests she has nothing to fear. In the G3 Prix des Chenes, Ballydoyle make another rare foray to one of France's lesser-contested juvenile contests with the stable even more replete than usual with potential Classic contenders. The Aug. 15 Dundalk maiden winner Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) from the family of Uncle Mo is the chosen one and he is joined by compatriot Pivotal Trigger (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Yuesheng Zhang's Jessica Harrington-trained son of the G1 Prix Royal-Oak and Park Hill winner Allegretto (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who took an always-competitive Galway maiden July 25.
