TAA Hosts Second Annual Holiday Giving Campaign

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will host its second annual Holiday Giving Campaign beginning Nov. 28 and running through Dec. 31. The 2023 campaign, designed to increase awareness for accredited Thoroughbred aftercare and to raise funds for the accredited organizations responsible for ensuring a quality life for equine athletes after their racing careers, is set to follow the success of last year's inaugural campaign which raised over $180,000.

“Our Thoroughbred horses provide us with so much, and each donation to the campaign goes a long way in supporting a network of 86 accredited organizations. Our organizations do an amazing job of taking care of the retired racehorses, so as we prepare for the holiday season, I hope that we can all simplify our gift giving and donate to Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance,” said TAA President Jeffrey Bloom.

Throughout the campaign, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will announce new daily match sponsors with some of the most prominent names in racing. Each sponsor will match all donations up to a specified amount for his or her day. Match sponsors will be announced daily in various industry publications along with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance website, social media, and email. Individuals interested in donating can do so here beginning Nov. 28.

‘TRF Cheers To 40 Years’ Day Staged at Keeneland

Highlighted by a special check presentation in the winner's circle, the leadership of Keeneland recognized October 20th as “TRF Cheers to 40 Years” Day at Keeneland in celebration of the Foundation's four decades of commitment to the welfare and retirement of Thoroughbred racehorses.

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) has been a pioneer in aftercare for retired racehorses since its founding in 1983. Joined by TRF Board Member Katie LaMonica and Warden Abby Caudill of Blackburn Correctional Complex, the Keeneland team presented the TRF with a donation of $4,000 toward the care of the TRF herd in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The TRF currently operates three farms in Kentucky, caring for 70 horses, including 40 at the TRF Second Chances farm at Blackburn Correctional Complex and 9 at the TRF Sanctuary Farm at Chestnut Hall.

The TRF will also host a table on the apron during Sunrise Trackside Saturday, Oct. 21 between 8 and 10 a.m.

Blue Grass Farms Charities Receives HOKC Grant

Officials at Blue Grass Farms Charities (BGFC) have announced that the organization has received a grant from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels (HOKC) in the amount of $6,354.00 to purchase 75 middle school backpacks and 200 grade school backpacks. Blue Grass Farms Charities serves individuals and their families who work in the Central Kentucky Thoroughbred industry by providing health and human services in six counties.

HOKC awarded $3.1 million in grants supporting 343 non-profits, impacting more than 3.8 million Kentuckians. Grants are made possible through donations from Kentucky Colonels from throughout the Commonwealth and around the world who chose to exercise the honor of being named a Kentucky Colonel in a meaningful way.

According to Commanding General Gary Boschert: “2022/2023 was another generous year for Colonels. Kentucky Colonels generosity is heartfelt and well spent on worthy agencies across the Commonwealth. Our long-term efforts in both western and eastern Kentucky are ongoing with funds remaining for each effort. We work with other agencies to ensure Kentucky Colonels money is spent wisely and deliver goods and products needed for the rebuild.”

BGFC provides health and human services to those who work in the Central Kentucky area. One of the most popular programs each year is the 'back-to-school backpack program. This year the charity will distribute 1,100 backpacks to farm and backstretch workers' children from kindergarten to eighth grade.

“We are grateful for this grant award by the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to help with the cost of such an important tool for students to have when school starts,” states Julie Kwasniewski, director of BGFC.

Moulton Donation To Benefit Lexington’s Town Branch Park

Prominent owner/breeder Susan Moulton has made a $2-million donation to Town Branch Park in Lexington which will be used to fund the construction of a water play area named in honor of Moulton's son Will Naylor Smith, who passed away 16 years ago at the age of eight.

Moulton, who for the last five years has been splitting her time between San Antonio, Texas, and her Versailles farm, has expressed an interest in becoming more involved in the community–especially with children.

Town Branch Park is helping to transform acres of space behind Lexington's Rupp Arena previously used for parking into green space. The project is being funded, programmed and maintained by private donations and grants.

“I love the location of the park,” said Moulton, who bred and races last year's GII Castle Key Bourbon S. winner Andthewinneris (Oscar Performance). “Families and visitors will have access to a big park in the heart of Lexington. I was attracted to the water feature because Will loved water and the outdoors. You don't ever get over the loss of a child, but you get through it by carrying them along with you.

“I believe that water heals. I hope people will go there and feel a sense of relaxation and release. Children will be able to play and learn as they play.”

“This is truly a transformational gift,” said Allison Lankford, executive director of Town Branch Park. “The water play area will be one of the most treasured and active assets of the park.

I can hardly wait to see children of all ages and abilities playing in this fun, safe and inclusive environment.”

The area also will include a bronze sculpture of Will by artist Christine Turnbull. The sculpture is based on a photo of Will and will be a replica of a sculpture at the DoSeum Museum

in San Antonio and the Imua Discovery Gardens in Hawaii.

Construction on the park is set to begin this summer.
