Churchill Downs Pledges $150K to 20 Aftercare Organizations in Conjunction with Ky Derby

The Churchill Downs Foundation has partnered with 20 Thoroughbred aftercare organizations for the upcoming 150th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve by pledging a $150,000 donation to support the organizations.

On Monday, Apr. 29, an aftercare post position draw will be held on the Churchill Downs backstretch where each horse in the Kentucky Derby field will be paired with an aftercare organization. Each organization is guaranteed at least a $5,000 donation from the Churchill Downs Foundation with the organization paired with the winner of the Kentucky Derby receiving a $25,000 donation. The runner-up will be awarded $20,000, the third-place finisher will receive $15,000 and fourth place will garner $10,000.

“We're thrilled to embark on this meaningful partnership with 20 of the best aftercare organizations in North America,” said Cathy Shircliff, Director of Equine Industry Relations for Churchill Downs Incorporated. “The Kentucky Derby is the pinnacle of Thoroughbred racing and it is all of our responsibilities to ensure every horse receives the care and support they deserve after their career on the racetrack.”

The organizations chosen this year are: After the Races, Friends of Ferdinand, Galloping Out, Horse and Hound Rescue, James River Horse Foundation, Kentucky Equine Adoption Center, MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, New Vocations, Old Friends, Racing For Home, Remember Me Rescue, ReRun, Inc., Second Stride, Secretariat Center, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Thoroughbred Retirement Network of Louisiana, TRRAC, United Pegasus Foundation, Virginia Thoroughbred Project and Win Place Home.

New Revenue Record For Jockeys And Jeans All American Stallion Season Sale

The 2024 All American Thoroughbred Stallion Sale put on by Jockeys and Jeans raised a total of $95,550, the organization announced Friday. The proceeds, which will benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), are a record for the sale which also included a record 48 seasons sold. Donations came from 32 farms across seven states and included 73 no-guarantee seasons purchased by 25 individual breeders.

“It was truly a community effort and one whose response proves racing is indeed a community; one that cares,” said Interim Jockeys and Jeans President Dr. Eddie Donnally who originated the season sale. “I believe that those blue-collar breeders in our industry represent racing's heartland. You're not likely to find them selling their yearlings in the Keeneland Select Sale, but like all breeders and stallion owners, they are holding on to hope; hope that their next foal will be a champion.”

“I believe I speak for the men and women who gave a big part of their lives beneath the horses we all know and love and directly benefit from this sale when I say we hope and pray every mating produces a genuine runner. Those severely injured jockeys and I, and every member of our committee, profusely thank each donor and buyer. They made a lot of difference in a lot of lives.”

PDJF Board President Nancy LaSala added: “On behalf of the men and women the PDJF serves, we are most grateful to the breeders who have supported this auction and the time and effort of the Jockeys and Jeans Committee to make this a successful fundraiser.”

Horseshoe Indy Makes Veteran’s Day Donation To HVAF

Team members and racing fans at Horseshoe Indianapolis participated in the third annual Veteran's Day event Nov. 10 to raise proceeds for the Hoosier Veterans and Families, Inc. (HVAF) of Indiana, according to a release by the track Monday.

The event featured several ways to raise funding and awareness for veterans including naming each race in honor of a veteran associated in some way to Horseshoe Indianapolis. Special saddle towels were also awarded to veterans and family members honored during the racing program. Additionally, a Veteran's Day Pick 5 Challenge was held featuring handicappers placing wagers into the Late Fire Five with all proceeds set going to HVAF.

“This is the third year we have offered the Pick Five Challenge on Veteran's Day and each year, these handicappers are eager to be involved with the cause,” said Horseshoe Indianapolis Vice President and GM Eric Halstrom.

In addition to funding raised from the Veteran's Day event, Horseshoe Indianapolis provided a $4,000 donation. Halstrom recently presented HVAF with a check for $4,430.15.

“Being able to be a small part of assistance for veterans is very rewarding for us,” added Halstrom. “We are proud to be an annual partner with HVAF.”

Buses Donated by Horseshoe Indianapolis

Two 2020 Shuttle buses were donated by Horseshoe Indianapolis to two organizations in Shelby County. The J. Kenneth Self Boys & Girls Club and Girls, Inc each received a shuttle from the previous fleet utilized by guests for the racetrack and casino visiting the facility.

“Each of these shuttles have less than 300 miles on them, so we hope they will be beneficial for both organizations for many years to come,” said Anna Dougherty, Vice President of Finance. “I'm very passionate about these organizations as my kids attended both facilities. They provide an incredible resource for our community and our families.”

Scott Spahr, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club, added, “The addition of this shuttle to our facility will make life a lot easier. Transportation is one of the hardest things to conquer, and we always have to figure out how to get the kids to sporting events and field trips. This shuttle will ease those concerns.”
