Distorted Humor’s Distractedprincess Stays Unbeaten with Second Daylight Score

8th-Santa Anita, $73,140, Alw (NW1$X)/Opt. Clm ($50,000), 1-23, 4yo/up, f/m, 1m, 1:39.09, ft, 6 1/2 lengths.
DISTRACTEDPRINCESS (f, 4, Distorted Humor–Celtic Princess {Brz} {Ch. 2-year-old Filly-Brz, Horse Of The Year-Brz, Ch. 3-year-old Filly-Brz, MG1SW-Brz, GSW & GISP-USA, $330,624}, by Public Purse) parlayed an uber-impressive 13-length debut seven-furlong romp Dec. 31 into a second career win on the slight stretch out to a mile Sunday at Santa Anita. She broke on top, dueled briefly with Eyes Open (Street Sense), but had a half-length advantage and was moving easily with her ears flicking back and forth by the time she passed the first quarter mark in :24.11. John Velazquez sat quietly through the next quarter with Eyes Open still just off her flank as the half-mile registered in :48.65. Distractedprincess began accelerating off the turn as Velazquez shook the reins, threw a few crosses, and waved the whip at her, but it was little more than a hand ride as she cruised down the lane to the easiest of 6 1/2-length victories while drifting out as the prohibitive 3-10 favorite. SW Fi Fi Pharoah (American Pharoah), who was coming off a fourth in the Jan. 1 GIII La Canada S., was the runner-up. The winner's only previous start, that monster sprint score on New Year's Eve, resulted in an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. Her champion dam was purchased by Neary Racing while in foal to Maclean's Music at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. She delivered a filly the next spring–now named Gungagungagalunga and unraced–but has not had another foal since. Celtic Princess was bred to Global Campaign for this spring. Sales History: $105,000 Wlg '18 KEENOV; $385,000 Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $81,600.

IRON WORKS (c, 3, Distorted Humor–Silverpocketsfull {GISP, $137,671}, by Indian Charlie) was well-supported at 6-5 on debut here and chased Particular (Classic Empire) from second through a quick :45.13 half mile. Making an eye-catching move midway on the final turn, the $550,000 OBS April graduate (:10 1/5) was even with the pacesetter after swinging wide into the lane and pulled clear in the final yards to win by a comfortable four lengths. Particular had to settle for second after making all the early running. The winner is his dam's second foal and second winner. Silverpocketsfull, a half-sister to recent Broussard Memorial S. winner Audrey's Time (Uncle Mo), is also responsible for a 2-year-old colt by Union Rags and a yearling colt by Flatter. Saturday Insights: Dean’s List Makes 3yo Debut on Busy Gulfstream Card

4th-GP, $60k, Msw, 3yo, 6f, 1:27 p.m. ET
Several in this race carry nice price tags but IRON WORKS (Distorted Humor) on the outside catches the eye first as a $550,000 purchase from last year's OBS April sale (:10 1/5) for MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm. The runner is a half to one other winner from GISP Silverpocketsfull (Indian Charlie), herself out of MGSP Unforgotten (Northern Afleet) and a half to another graded stakes-placed horse. Particular (Classic Empire) one down in the gate is part of the first 3-year-old crop for his sire, and is a $300,000 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream graduate after breezing a quarter in :10 2/5. Awesome Aaron (Practical Joke), out of a stakes-winning half to a group stakes placed runner in Japan, hails from the same sale; having drilled a quarter in :10 1/5 before going to Bradley Thoroughbreds acting as agent for William H. Lawrence for $350,000. The half to Grade I winner Denman's Call (Northern Afleet) by the late Arrogate, $200,000 KEESEP and $100,000 OBS June graduate Anthracite, will break from midpack. TJCIS PPs

5th-GP, $61k, OC 75k/N1X, 3yo, 6f, 1:57 p.m. ET
After an eye-catching debut victory Dec. 11 at Gulfstream Park, WinStar Farm and Siena Farm's DEAN'S LIST (Speightstown) will make his 3-year-old debut against a closely matched allowance field. A winner by five lengths after contesting a speed duel through fractions of :21.70 and :44.36 half, he earned an 83 Beyer for the effort. The colt is out of Mildly Offensive (Sharp Humor), a dual stakes-winning half-sister to MGSW It's No Joke (Distorted Humor) and SW Keep Laughing (Distorted Humor). Dean's List adds Lasix here for Todd Pletcher. TJCIS PPs

7th-GP, $60k, Msw, 3yo, 1m, 3:05 p.m. ET
Whisper Hill Farm homebred CHARGE IT (Tapit) will be representing the family of 2013 Broodmare of the Year, Take Charge Lady (Dehere) through his dam, I'll Take Charge (Indian Charlie). The second foal for the young broodmare, a $2.2 million purchase by Whisper Hill from the 2013 Keeneland September sale, he becomes her first to the races. His second dam needs little introduction, her line producing three sires as well as recent graded and listed stakes winners As Time Goes By (American Pharoah) and Courvoisier (Tapit). Next to that one in the gate is Touch Code (Honor Code), a half to champion 3-year-old West Coast (Flatter), whose first 2-year-olds will arrive this year. Their dam, champion 2-year-old and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies victress Caressing, is also the second dam of three millionaires in Japan. He was a distant second behind 'TDN Rising Star' Emmanuel (More Than Ready) on debut in Hallandale Dec. 11. The field of 10 also includes Trending (Uncle Mo), a half-brother to $1.2 million 2017 Keeneland September yearling Almashriq (War Front). Out of GSW & GISP Theyskens' Theory (Bernardini), the early May colt claims Stevie Wonderboy (Stephen Got Even) and Somelikeithotbrown (Big Brown) down the page and will debut for Shug McGaughey as a homebred for Andrew Rosen. Alternation Relocates To Darby Dan Farm For 2022 Breeding Season

Multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Alternation, a half-brother to Grade 1 winner and Darby Dan Farm stallion Higher Power and the sire of multiple G1 winner Serengeti Empress, is being relocated from Pin Oak Stud to Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky., by Steve Belford's Maccabee Farm for the upcoming breeding season, the farm announced today. Alternation is being resyndicated and he will stand for a fee of $7,500 S&N.

The 2008 son of Distorted Humor is produced from the multiple stakes-winning and stakes-producing Seattle Slew mare Alternate, a three-time stakes winner who banked $550,695 and is a half-sister to Peaks and Valleys, a multiple G1 winner, millionaire, and a Horse of the Year in Canada.

“We're excited to bring a horse of Alternation's caliber to Darby Dan,” said Ryan Norton, stallion director at Darby Dan Farm. “He was a top-class horse on the racetrack, he is from an active and accomplished Pin Oak family, and he is already making his presence felt as a stallion, siring the likes of (G1) Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress. He is a great-looking horse and possesses all the qualities to be a top sire.”

Alternation was a multiple Graded stakes winner of $1,064,727 in a stellar racing career. He captured five stakes races in Pin Oak's famed colors, including the G2 Peter Pan Stakes at 3 and the G2 Oaklawn Handicap, G3 Pimlico Special, and G3 Razorback Handicap the following year at 4.

As a stallion, Alternation is represented by multiple G1 winner Serengeti Empress, winner of the 2019 G1 Kentucky Oaks and the 2020 G1 Ballerina Stakes en route to earnings of $2,175,653. Alternation is represented in 2021 by Ballroom Blitz, victorious in the Best of Ohio Distaff Stakes on Oct. 30, Ellanation, winner of the Jameela Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., and La Bolena, a Group 3 winner in Panama. He is also the sire of G3 Super Derby winner Limation and multiple stakes winner Alternative Slew.
