Frosted’s Ice Dancing Takes On Baffert Trio in Santa Ynez

Richard Mandella's Ice Dancing (Frosted), the only filly in a scratched-down field of five with a graded-stakes placing already to her name, will seek her first win since breaking her maiden in Sunday's rescheduled Santa Ynez S. at 'The Great Race Place.' The Grade III event, which was originally scheduled for last Sunday's New Year's Eve program, carries Kentucky Oaks points to the tune of 20-8-6-4-2, which will go to the top five finishers that are not associated with Bob Baffert.

A homebred for Bass Stables LLC, the newly minted 3-year-old took four tries to earn her first win after three consecutive finishes behind GISW And Tell Me Nolies (Arrogoate), including a third in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. Fourth behind both that rival and the Santa Ynez's scratched morning-line favorite 'TDN Rising Star' Justique (Justify) in the GII Chandelier S., Ice Dancing rebounded in her fourth start to break her maiden ahead of Bob Baffert's Doinitthehardway (Street Sense) at Del Mar Nov. 25.

Speaking of the Baffert barn, he will enter a trio in a bid to win what would be his fourth Santa Ynez in a row. It appears that Huntingcoco (Practical Joke), Fast and Shiny (Bernardini) and Parody (Distorted Humor) have not flashed much in the way of speed under the California sun over the past few months, so a game effort is in order if one of them wants to keep their conditioner's streak alive.

Dec. 18 Insights: Glen Hill Farm Homebred by Curlin Unveiled

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

6th-AQU, $85k, Msw, 2yo, f, 1m, 2:14p.m. ET
Manzanita Stables LLC went to $300,000 at KEESEP in 2021 to acquire LUCKY COMBINATION (Ghostzapper), a price tag likely aided by her dam being out of a half-sister to GISW & MGISP Girolamo (A.P. Indy) and his full-siblings MGISP & MGSW Daydreaming and GISP Accelerator. Dam Lucky Number herself claims GISW Got Lucky (A.P. Indy)–responsible for MGSP Overtook (Curlin)–as a half-relation and has produced two other winning fillies. This is the female family of GISW Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke); GISW Imagining (Giant's Causeway); GI Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver (Maria's Mon) and his graded-stakes winning brothers Cyrus Alexander (Medaglia d'Oro) and Brethren (Distorted Humor); GISW Callback (Street Sense); GISW Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) as well as no less than 25 other graded and listed black-type earners. She brings in a steady string of work outs from the barn of Christophe Clement. TJCIS PPs

6th-GP, $70k, Msw, 2yo, f, 6f, 2:38p.m. ET
Glen Hill Farm will unveil their homebred OCEAN CLUB (Curlin) in this six furlong baby dash. Out of MGSP Theatre Star (War Front), herself a half-sister to GISW, track record-setter Taris (Flatter)–dam of GSW King Fury (Curlin)–and that one's full-sister, SW Stoweshoe, Ocean Club has a two-time winning full-sister Gather as You Go. This is the extended female family of Panamanian champion 3-year-old filly Chef Michelle (Pine Bluff). Tom Proctor will send her to post. To her outside and one over is Famosa (Speightstown), the half-sister to MGSP Into Mystic (Into Mischief). Also campaigned by her breeder Tami Bobo, the chestnut is out of Loveofalifetime, who counts GSW, track record-setter Savorthetime (Gilded Time); GISP Rogue Romance (Smarty Jones); and MGSP Tizbig (Tiznow) as half-siblings. She's also a half-sister to Indy Mood for Luv (A.P. Indy), dam of GSW Island Bound (Speightstown), who herself credits GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Aloha West (Hard Spun) to her tally. Famosa will go to post from the barn of Antonio Sano on the back of a bullet work Dec. 7 over the surface, the four furlong work in :48 flat the fastest of 23 that morning. TJCIS PPs

Classy Lotus Land Resumes In Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. The weekend's racing is highlighted by a high-class renewal of the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) at Toyko, and with plenty of U.S.-bred activity, here are the horses of interest for Saturday running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. Sunday's runners of note will appear in Saturday's TDN:

Saturday, October 29, 2022
1st-TOK, ¥9,900,000 ($68k), Maiden, 2yo, 1600m
MODERNIZE QUEEN (f, 2, Distorted Humor–Never Grow Old, by Scat Daddy), a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, is the first foal to the races for her dam, sold for $100,000 in foal to California Chrome at Keeneland November in 2018. Never Grow Old is a winning daughter of Chilean Group 1 winner Noches de Rosa (Chi) (Stagecraft {GB}), who defeated fan favorite Megahertz (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the 2004 GI Gamely Breeders' Cup H. when trained by Richard Mandella for Gerald Ford's Diamond A Racing Corp. Breeders' Cup-winning jockey Yuga Kawada takes the ride on the chestnut, whose lone start resulted in distant fourth-place effort over nine furlongs at Niigata Aug. 7. B-Grantley Acres (KY)

11th-HSN, Swan S.-G2, ¥113m ($772k), 3yo/up, 1400mT
LOTUS LAND (m, 5, Point of Entry–Little Miss Muffet, by Freud) kicks off her autumn preparation in this spot which connections could use as a springboard to loftier targets at home and/or abroad. Victorious in six of her 15 lifetime appearances, the bay was a winner in Group 3 company last season over a mile and has proven her versatility this season with success in the G3 Kyoto Himba S. (video, SC 7) in February at this intermediate trip ahead of a fast-closing second in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1200m) (video, SC 9). She was last seen finishing 10th, but not beaten far, in the G1 Yasuda Kinen back over a mile in June and holds entries for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile and G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint in December. A start in next month's G1 Mile Championship could also be on the cards. B-Dr Aaron Sones & Dr Naoya Yoshida (KY)
