Dubawi Leads Sires Of UAE Winners In 2020; Distorted Humor, Bernardini In Top 10

Dominant Dubawi once again topped the Thoroughbred sire statistics for 2020 in the UAE, landing an emphatic 25 winners for the 218-race year.

The Dalham Hall Stud resident, a multiple Group 1-winning son of Dubai World Cup champion Dubai Millennium, had 18 individual winners, undoubtedly topped by the world's top-rated horse, Ghaiyyath, who won the Group 3 at Meydan named after his grandfather.

Other standouts to win locally for the world's premier multi-surface stud included G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 and G2 Singspiel winner Benbatl, G3 Mahab Al Shimaal victor Wafy and late-blooming listed The Entisar winner Firnas.

A clear second was the recently deceased Shamardal, who had an impressive 11 individual winners scoring 13 times. G2 Zabeel Mile winner Zakouski topped the lot, while swift DWC Carnival-winning Almanaara and dual handicap winner Untold Secret added depth to his influence.

Catching the eye was Distorted Humor, who had five wins from five individual horses, while New Approach also did well for himself, scoring six wins with five individuals.

UAE's Top 10 Sires

  1. Dubawi (25 wins, 18 winners)
  2. Shamardal (13, 11)
  3. Sea the Stars (7, 5)

Who’s Your Pick? George Adams

GEORGE ADAMS, Housatonic Bloodstock

Instagrand (Into Mischief), $7,500, Taylor Made

Of the first-years, Instagrand is a really interesting horse and priced competitively at $7,500 at Taylor Made. If he’d retired after his first two starts, folks would have knocked him on soundness but they’d have bred to him because of that brilliance and the Into Mischief factor, and his fee would’ve been higher. Nothing he did after that changes anything about his juvenile campaign, and physically he’s a beast. Plus, Into Mischief has only gotten hotter. I think the commercial market will really love him, even without Larry Best supporting him strongly at the sales.

Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor), $10,000, Spendthrift

I was a huge Jimmy Creed fan last year at $15,000, and Spendthrift knocked him down even more this year to $10,000. I think that makes him hands-down the best value in Kentucky this year —we will book more mares to him than anything else this year.

I’m not the only one who has noticed that he’s achieved great stats with very mediocre mares (7.4% stakes winners to runners and 16.8% black-type horses to runners, including four top-class graded horses, all from mares good for just a 1.01 CI) and there are some very sharp people going in big on him this year. With better-bred crops in the pipeline, he could be the next one on that Kantharos/Munnings trajectory as far as commerciality and stud fee.

Thank you to the breeders and agents who have participated in our ongoing ‘Who’s Your Pick’ series this week. Did you miss a few responses? You can catch up on the entire series here.

What’s In a Name: Gervais

Kudos to whoever was creative and subtle enough to name GERVAIS a horse by DISTORTED HUMOR. The winner of a handicap race at Meydan last week has just that almost risqué name. English actor Ricky Gervais is the creator of The Office, a TV program that stretched the borders of mainstream humor in the UK and in the US. Moreover, Ricky Gervais has presented the Golden Globes five times, always under the threat of being fired because of his outrageous sense of humor and his cutting, take-no-prisoner jokes. With Gervais live at the microphone, everybody knows that everything is possible. Gervais’s closing refrain “I don’t care, I don’t care” – sounds funnier than it reads… – is the manifesto of a comedy that is both old (British) and new (the sky is the limit).

Gervais, g, 6, Distorted Humor–Ruth E, by A.P. Indy. Meydan, 12-3, Hcp. (AED82.5k), 1600m, 1:38.87. O-Jumaa Mubarak Al Junaibi. B-Darley (KY). T-Ali Rashid Al Rayhi. *£30,000 HRA ’17 GODSEP. **1/2 to Ruthless Quality (Elusive Quality), SW-US, $190,620.
