Win Win Win Filly Ties OBS Under-Tack Record

An Ocala Stud-bred and -consigned filly from the first crop of GI Forego S. winner Win Win Win (Hat Trick {Jpn}) equaled the record time for a quarter-mile breeze over the SafeTrack surface at the OBS sales grounds, covering the distance in :20 1/5 during the fourth and final preview for next week's OBS March Sale of 2-Year-Olds In Training.

“It wasn't a real surprise,” said Ocala Stud's David O'Farrell. “She prepped very well last week, did it very easily and she's just a really, really good filly. She's got 'it'–she's got that 'it' factor. You really don't know exactly what you have until the final prep.

“She's powerful, very classy and very good-minded,” he continued. “She came back to the barn after her breeze and just cooled out beautifully. She never turned a hair, she's very quiet and just great to be around. Every time you ask her for work, she lays it down for you. We were high on her at the farm, but when we got over here it completely translated. She's the real deal, she's fast.”

Hip 788 is the latest foal out of their homebred Unanimity (Union Rags), whose own dam Lady Discreet (Boundary) was acquired by Ocala Stud for $45,000 in foal to Phone Trick at the 2004 OBS Fall Mixed Sale.

A daughter of 1995 GI Alabama S. heroine Pretty Discreet (Private Account), Lady Discreet is a half-sister to Grade I-winning sire Discreet Cat (Forestry), GISW Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft) and SW/MGISP Pretty Wild (Wild Again). For Ocala Stud, Lady Discreet produced MSW & MGSP Courtesan (Street Sense), the stakes-winning and stakes-producing Chary (Montbrook) and The Shady Lady (Quality Road), the unraced dam of undefeated GIII Holy Bull S. winner Hades (Awesome Slew) and SW Devious Dame (Girvin).

The second-fastest quarter-mile move Saturday was turned in by the Pick View LLC-consigned hip 686, a first-crop son of Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) out of the Irish stakes-placed So Stylish (Johannesburg), who stopped the clock in :20 2/5. Bred by Mt. Brilliant Farm & Ranch, hip 686 was purchased by Pick View for $40,000 at Keeneland September last fall.

A day after a pair of horses shared the :9 3/5 bullet for one-eighth mile breezes, no fewer than seven juveniles shared top honors when working in :9 4/5 Saturday. They include:

  • Hip 670, a Catalina Cruiser half-brother to SP Motown Mischief (Malibu Moon) from Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel);

  • Hip 780, a Bolt d'Oro filly whose dam Troublesome (Into Mischief) produced MSW Amidst Waves (Midshipman) from the draft of Wavertree Sales Inc (Ciaran Dunne);

  • Hip 825, a New York-bred, May-foaled colt by Goldencents and a half-brother to SW Treasure King (Treasure Beach {GB}) from the consignment of Cesar Loya Training & Sales;

  • Hip 844, a filly from the first crop by Instagrand (Into Mischief) out of a half-sister to Grade I-winning juvenile Noble's Promise (Cuvee) and from the family of GISW Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) from the Eddie Woods draft.

Discreet Cat Colt Returns A Winner At Hanshin

Victorious in last year's G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. (1400m), Obamburumai (Jpn) (Discreet Cat) was having his first start since finishing seventh to Dolce More (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. in December.

Settled just ahead of midfield as lukewarm favourite Yurisha (Jpn) (Greater London {Jpn}) tore away to lead by nearly double digits over the rain-affected turf, Obamburumai was a bit short of room and with plenty to do with less than 400 metres to race, but he found his best stride late and got up on the line to defeat Session (Jpn) (Silver State) in this prep for next month's G1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo.

The Maeda family's North Hills Management acquired the winner's third dam, a full-sister to Unbridled's Song, for $275,000 at the 2001 Keeneland September Sale and she produced Obamburumai's Group 3-placed second dam two years prior to dropping D'Accord (Jpn), a future Group 3 winner from the first crop of the late Deep Impact (Jpn).

Le Sucre has since gone on to be an important part of the North Hills broodmare band, as she has accounted for the dual group-winning and Group 1-placed Blanc Bonheur (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}); Entscheiden (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), a listed winner at home and twice third in the G1 Prix de la Foret; and the fleet two-time Group 3 winner Bien Fait (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}).

Pink Gerbera is also represented by a 2-year-old Maurice (Jpn) filly, a yearling filly by Rulership and was most recently covered by Saturnalia (Jpn).

Discreet Cat Colt Remains Undefeated At Tokyo

Fresh off a winning debut over this trip at Chukyo versus newcomers on Sept. 24, Obamburumai (Jpn) (Discreet Cat) stunned the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. field at Tokyo on Saturday, winning by a length at odds of 50-1.

Noticeably lathered on his shoulders in the preliminaries, the bay stalked from third along the backstretch as From Dusk (Bolt d'Oro) was pressed by Speed Of Light (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}). Saving every inch of ground against the rail on the bend, he was asked for his bid inside the final quarter-mile. Steered to the outside of the embattled pacesetters, the son of Pink Gerbera (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) shifted gears and motored away to score with a degree of comfort at the wire. From Dusk was a nose better than Speed Of Light in the placings.

Pedigree Notes

Darley stallion Discreet Cat now has 38 stakes winners to his credit, 15 of them at group level following Obamburumai's score. Originally based at Darley's American arm near Lexington, the 2006 GI Cigar Mile hero was transferred to Darley's Japanese division in 2017 where he has been based ever since. Leading the charge for his progeny is the dual GI Carter H. hero Dads Caps, while his GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Discreet Marq has since produced listed winner Thoughts Of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). GI Beholder Mile S. heroine Secret Spice and GI Chandelier S. victress Secret Compass round out his Group 1 winners Stateside, with Taksim (Brz) landing a top-flight race in Brazil.

Although winless in 11 starts, Pink Gerbera did place second in a one-mile maiden for 3-year-olds at Hanshin. Her first foal, the Ceres Hunt (Jpn) gelding Fuyu Shogun (Jpn), is a winner, and with Obamburumai's victory, she has a flawless produce record. Her yearling is a filly by Maurice (Jpn) and Pink Gerbera also has a weanling filly by Rulership (Jpn).

Second dam Le Sucre (Jpn) (Sakura Bakushin O {Jpn}) foaled the stakes winner and dual G1 Prix de la Foret third Entscheiden (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), as well as two other multiple Japanese group winners in Bien Fait (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) and Blanc Bonheur (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). The last-named was third in the G1 Hanshin S. GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and GI Florida Derby victor turned influential sire and broodmare sire Unbridled's Song (Unbridled) is under the fourth dam, Trolley Song (Caro {Ire}).

Discreet Cat Mare Tops Keeneland Digital Sale

Graded stakes-placed 4-year-old Lady Glamour (Discreet Cat) topped Keeneland's June Digital Sale Tuesday at $115,000. Offered in foal to popular young stallion Not This Time, she was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent VII as hip 12 and sold to Norman Umphenour's Anzac Farm LLC with Taylor Made also acting on behalf of the buyer.

Just a $1,000 FTKOCT yearling buy, Lady Glamour took her juvenile debut in May of 2019 for trainer Larry Demeritte and owner Inga Demeritte before finishing third in Churchill's Debutante S. She subsequently RNA'd for $145,000 at that year's Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age sale, and would go on to romp in an Ellis allowance before a second in the Rags to Riches S. and third in the GII Golden Rod S. later that season. She had last been seen finishing fourth in the GIII Dogwood S. last June, and was intended to be offered as a racing prospect this March before suffering a cut on her hind fetlock that prompted her removal from that auction and subsequent visit with Not This Time. The earner of $126,170 has a live sibling in the form of 3-year-old Mucho Del Oro (Mucho Macho Man), a winner of three straight at Santa Anita.

The sale's second-priciest lot was $35,000 stallion prospect King Jack (Jimmy Creed) (hip 13), who was also offered by Taylor Made. Purchased by Dan Kjorsvik, the talented 'TDN Rising Star' won three of his four career outings, capped by a victory in the 2019 GII Gallant Bob S.

The one-day sale grossed $181,500 for nine horses.
