Desert Debuters: Beautifully Bred Mizzyaan Looks To Keep Ball Rolling For Watson

The immaculately bred MIZZYAAN becomes the first starter in the Emirates for the all-conquering Justify and can make her presence felt at first asking in Friday's Cocoa Beach S. (allowance), a 1600-meter event restricted to 3-year-old fillies at Meydan Racecourse. The Mar. 5 foal, a homebred for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, is the first foal out of Vale Dori (Arg) (Asiatic Boy {Arg}), a Group 1 winner in her native Argentina, whose two local starts for trainer Mike de Kock included a runner-up effort to Polar River (Congrats) in the 2016 G3 UAE Oaks followed by a close fourth in the G2 UAE Derby. Vale Dori was sent to continue her career in the U.S. under Bob Baffert, taking out the 2017 GI Santa Margarita S. and the GI Zenyatta S. the following season. Mizzyaan has gate two in a field of 10 and Pat Dobbs has the call for trainer Doug Watson, who sent out the promising Russian invader Kabirkhan (California Chrome) to victory in a 2000-meter handicap last Friday. Lining up against Mizzyaan are fellow firster Kibo Misaki (Girvin), a $210,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic breezer who is out of a half-sister to Grade II winner Fantastic Style (Harlan's Holiday); and the well-regarded debut winners Manama Gold (Star Guitar) and Lahfaty (Mitole).

Desert Debuters: Pricy World of Trouble Colt On Debut

In this series, we will have a look at American-bred first-time juvenile starters (through the end of 2023) and debuting 3-year-olds in maiden races at the tracks of the Emirates Racing Authority–predominantly Meydan and occasionally Jebel Ali–with a specific focus on pedigree and/or performance in a sales ring in the meetings leading up to the Dubai World Cup program Saturday, Mar. 30, 2024. Meydan will host racing mainly on Fridays, with the exception of Super Saturday Mar. 2 and Dubai World Cup night. Here are the horses of interest for the Saturday program at Jebel Ali:

3rd-JEB, AED72,000 ($19,606), Maiden, NH2yo/SH3yo, 1200m
PRINCIDENT (World of Trouble), a $75,000 Keeneland September acquisition by Powerstown Stud, caught the eye during the under-tack preview for this year's Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale (see below) and was knocked down to Rabbah Bloodstock for €210,000, the second-priciest of 30 juveniles reported as sold from the first crop of his sire (by Kantharos). Racing in the colors of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, the Feb. 12 produce is out of the MSP Truth in the Lies (Hold Me Back), a half-sister to five-time New Jersey-bred stakes winner Trueamericanspirit (Is It True).

 

 

Fayadh (Liam's Map) is the latest foal to make the races out of Class Included (Include), whose 11 career stakes successes includes the GIII Ballerina S. at Hastings Park. A $100,000 KEESEP purchase by former jockey turned bloodstock agent Ted Durcan/Longways, the chestnut colt fetched €148,148 from owner Ali Haddad at the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up at Meydan this past March (see below). Desert Debuters: Expensive Nyquist Fillies Get Started

In this series, we will have a look at first-time starters entered for age-restricted maiden races on the week's main live program at Meydan Racecourse, focusing specifically on pedigree and/or performance in sales ring, both domestic and abroad. With the exception of Thursday, Dec. 1, Super Saturday, Mar. 4, and Dubai World Cup night Mar. 25, the main meeting at Meydan takes place on Fridays. Six meetings are to be staged at the UAE's flagship racecourse prior to the start of the Dubai World Cup Carnival Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. Nine Carnival cards are programmed from January through March. Here is a look at this this Thursday's entries:

ASAWER (f, 2, Nyquist–How My Heart Works, by Not For Love) is a half-sister to fellow Maryland-bred dual stakes winner and Grade III-placed Monday Morning Qb (Imagining) and cost noted reseller Cary Frommer $200,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Sale before hammering for $450,000 after breezing a furlong in :10 2/5 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale. There is further pedigree to recommend her, as How My Heart Works is a half-sister to MSW & MGSP Awesome Flower (Flower Alley), the dam of current dual Grade I winner and GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile runner-up Cyberknife (Gun Runner). This is also the female family of G1 Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed (Tiznow). Pat Dobbs rides for perennial leading trainer Doug Watson.

 

 

Habooba (f, 2, Nyquist–Westside Tapstress, by Lookin At Lucky) is out of a half-sister to Grade III winner Discreet Hero (Honour and Glory) and was also purchased out of this year's Midlantic sale, where she breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 flat and was knocked down for $475,000. The Feb. 17 foal is from the family of MGSW Informed (Tiznow).

SERAJ (Nyquist) cost $72,000 at last fall's Fasig-Tipton October Sale and the Apr. 29 foal matured into a $200,000 OBS April juvenile after breezing a furlong in :10 flat. The chestnut is the second foal to the races out of Hawana (War Front), whose unraced dam Tare Green (Giant's Causeway) produced French listed winner and Group 3-placed Ocean Atlantique (American Pharoah), runner-up in Aqueduct allowance company Nov. 19. The colt's third dam was responsible for Eclipse Award winner Leroidesanimaux (Brz).

Seyouff (Flatter), a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling, is out of an unraced daughter of Life Happened (Stravinsky), the dam of two-time champion and six-time GI/G1SW Tepin (Bernstein) as well as MGSW/MGISP Vyjack (Into Mischief). The colt's dam Azara (More Than Ready) fetched $875,000 from Bridlewood Farm in foal to Into Mischief at KEENOV in 2016.

High Everest (Honor Code) is out of She Be Striking (GB) (Smart Strike), a winning daughter of Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old filly She Be Wild (Offlee Wild). The March-foaled dark bay was sold for $32,000 at FTKOCT last fall and returned better than three times that amount when hammering for 80,000gns at this year's Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale (breeze-up video).
