Desert Crown’s Dam to Tattersalls December Sale

Desert Berry (GB) (Green Desert), the dam of this year's Derby winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), is the latest high-profile addition to the Sceptre Sessions at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale.

The 13-year-old mare will be offered for sale carrying a full-sibling to Desert Crown by her owner Gary Robinson of Strawberry Fields Stud. The Derby winner was himself bought at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 280,000gns, and his yearling half-brother from the first crop of Lanwades sire Study Of Man (Ire) will be offered as lot 435 during Book 1 this year.

“Desert Berry has been an absolute star for us,” said Robinson. “Having studied thoroughbred bloodlines all my life, breeding a Derby winner is an absolute pinnacle and I am immensely proud to have bred Desert Crown. Desert Berry is a superb individual with an impeccable breeding record and I have retained two of her daughters in whom I have great confidence.”

Along with the Derby winner, Desert Berry is also dam of the Group 3 winner Archie McKellar (GB) (Archipenko), who was renamed Flying Thunder when exported to Hong Kong. The mare has also produced another three multiple winners by Archipenko, including the six-time scorer Rose Berry (GB), who is also now in foal to Nathaniel.

A winner herself over a mile, Desert Berry is out of a Distant View half-sister to the top Juddmonte mare Binche (GB), whose offspring include the Group 1 winners Byword (GB) and Proviso (GB), and Group 2 winner Finche (GB).

“It is rare for the dam of a Derby winner to be offered for sale, and even rarer in the year of the Derby triumph,” said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony. “Desert Crown is an outstanding Derby winner and Desert Berry will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of our inaugural Sceptre Sessions. It is a pleasure and a privilege to offer such an exceptional broodmare on behalf of Gary Robinson, and the depth and international appeal of her pedigree make her an enticing prospect for breeders from throughout the world.”

The Tattersalls December Mare Sale begins its four-day run on Monday, 28 November.

Classic Relations Head Tattersalls October Book 1

Half-siblings to this season's Classic heroes Desert Crown (GB) and Cachet (Ire) head a list of elite yearlings heading to Book 1 of the the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

With 549 lots catalogued across the three days, relations to recent Group 1 winners Perfect Power (Ire), Alcohol Free (Ire) and Inspiral (GB) also feature, along with siblings to 2015 Horse of the Year Golden Horn (GB), Classic-winning brothers Magna Grecia (Ire) and St Mark's Basilica (Fr), Arc winner Waldgeist (GB), and sprint sensation Battaash (Ire).

The half-brother to Derby winner Desert Crown is from the first crop of Lanwades sire Study Of Man (Ire) and will be offered by his breeder Gary Robinson of Strawberry Fields Stud. Similarly, breeder John Bourke of Hyde Park Stud consigns a Cotai Glory (GB) half-sister to 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet.

“Even by its customary lofty standards the catalogue for Book 1 of the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale looks to be exceptional,” said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony.

“This year's October Book 1 features own or half-brothers and sisters to more than 60 Classic and Group 1 winners and more than a third of the 549 yearlings catalogued are by current European top 10 sires.”

Those sires include current champion Frankel (GB), who is represented by 28 Book 1 yearlings, including a full-brother to Group 1 winner Without Parole (GB), who is offered by last year's leading vendor Newsells Park Stud.

Dubawi (Ire) has only two fewer yearlings catalogued and among that sizeable group is the second foal of the Group 1 winner Urban Fox (GB) (Foxwedge {Aus}). The colt was bred by the Kieswetter family's Barnane Stud and will be sold on their behalf by Baroda Stud.

Seventeen yearlings by the late Galileo (Ire) also feature, including a full-brother to the Group 1-winning trio of Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire), and The United States (Ire), who will be offered by Luke Barry's Manister House Stud.

Mahony continued, “The consistent quality of October Book 1 is reflected in yet another outstanding year for Book 1 graduates on racecourses throughout the world headed in Europe by Classic winners Magical Lagoon and Native Trail and further afield, by American Grade 1 winners In Italian and McKulick.

“Every October Book 1 yearling will again be eligible for the hugely popular £20,000 October Book 1 Bonus Scheme, which has already rewarded 286 winners with almost £7,000,000 in bonus prize-money and ensures that buyers at Europe's premier yearling sale continue to be rewarded with unprecedented prize money.”

Beginning two weeks of yearling trade at Tattersalls in Newmarket, Book 1 will commence on Oct. 4. The catalogue is now available online.

Desert Crown Unlikely To Run Again This Season

Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is doubtful to run again this season but connections of the brilliant G1 Derby winner are committed to keeping him in training next year.

Sir Michael Stoute's sixth Derby winner has not raced since his Epsom triumph and Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail, delivered the news on Friday's Nick Luck Daily Podcast that the colt was unlikely to reappear again in 2022.

“The difficult thing is, would he [Stoute] have time to prepare him [for the major races in the autumn] and that probably is doubtful,” Raymond said.

Asked if he was confident that Desert Crown would be back next year, Raymond added, “One hundred per cent yes, he'll definitely be back next year. I don't know what the programme is but I know Saeed would like to take him to Dubai for the Sheema Classic but that's entirely up to him and Sir Michael.

“The trouble with the [G1] Sheema Classic is, it's a great race and you get lots of kudos for winning it over there, but you miss so many early-season races because you have to give them a good rest afterwards.

“Saeed is looking towards Dubai with him and we're pretty confident that he'll get there.”

Derby Winner Desert Crown To Miss Juddmonte At York

Desert Crown (GB) (Narthaniel {Ire}), the unbeaten Derby winner, will not run in the G1 Juddmonte International S. at York next month, his owner Saeed Suhail's racing manager Bruce Raymond has revealed.

Sir Michael Stoute's colt wowed racing fans with a devastating display in the Derby but has not been seen since that Epsom triumph.

He was being aimed at the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on Saturday but was ruled out of that contest after missing a key piece of work with a foot injury.

In what is the latest blow to the connections of the outstanding 3-year-old, Desert Crown will not make it to York, with Raymond revealing that Soute has been taking things easy with the colt.

Raymond said, “We'll try to prepare him for the end of the season, either the Arc or the Champion S. I've not spoken to Sir Michael, but the York race is Aug. 17, he'd need to be galloping by now. I just don't think there is enough time to prepare him.”

In the absence of Desert Crown, Coral cut Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) to 4-5 favourite from 5-4 for the York showpiece. Desert Crown can be backed at odds as big as 5-1 with some firms for the Prix de l Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 2.

Stoute did not want to elaborate on the news, and simply said, “We are not going to issue any statements about it and not going to get into it. He is not going to York, though.”
