Dam of Derby Winner Brings 1.9M at Tattersalls

The dam of this season's Derby winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) realized 1.9 million guineas from M.V. Magnier at Tuesday's Tattersalls December Mare Sale. Offered as lot 1891, Desert Berry (GB) (Green Desert) was consigned by Strawberry Fields Stud. The 13-year-old mare is also responsible for Hong Kong Group 3 victor Archie McKellar (GB) (aka Flying Thunder). Desert Crown was sold in foal to Nathaniel, meaning she is carrying a full-sibling to Desert Crown.

Desert Crown to Remain in Training at Four

Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), sidelined since winning the G1 Cazoo Derby in June, will be kept in training next season as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

“I took the owner to see him last week,” said Bruce Raymond, Saeed Suhail's racing manager. “He is turned out daily at Darley [Stud in Newmarket]–I live just across the road.

“He goes out for maybe three hours a day and [trainer Sir] Michael [Stoute] came to see him. He said that while the weather is good, let him eat grass. 'I'm not going to do anything with him, just let him eat grass' he said.”

In regard to the long layoff, Raymond added, “[The injury] was very minor and a lesser trainer would have run him [back this season]. It's not the way Michael does things. He doesn't want to rush him back.”

Derby Hero Desert Crown’s King George Bid Up In The Air After Setback

Impressive G1 Cazoo Derby hero Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) has suffered a “little niggle” according to trainer Sir Michael Stoute and could miss an intended start in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. on July 23. The Saeed Suhail-owned colt was due to work on Thursday morning, but that plan has been suspended.

“He won't be working tomorrow morning,” said Stoute. “We just have a little niggle that we are checking out on his foot.

“So, we will have more news on Friday or Saturday. It is too early to say whether he will run in the King George. We can't make a decision now.”

An impressive three-for-three in his young career, the bay won at Nottingham in November, before bolting up a 3 1/4-length victor in the G2 Dante S. at York on May 12. He polished off his Epsom foes by 2 1/2 lengths on June 4 and has not graced the racecourse since.

America's Life Is Good (Into Mischief) and crack sprinter Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}) share second at 124, while Speaker's Corner (Street Sense) sits fourth just one point below. It is a four-way tie for fifth at 122, with Hong Kong wunderkind Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) joined by G1 Cazoo Derby In Memory Of Lester Piggott winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), G3 Brigadier Gerard S. hero Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) and G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club winner Valdeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}). Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the full-brother to Baaeed and a recent winner of the G1 DahlBury Coronation Cup, has been ranked at 121. Three horses were rated 120 in the past month-G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup scorer Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}), G1 Tokyo Yushun hero Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) and G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas victress Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).
