Soumillon Positive For COVID-19; Colin Keane Picks Up Breeders’ Cup Turf Mount On Tarnawa

Leading Irish jockey Colin Keane will pick up the mount on Tarnawa in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland, reports At the Races  on Twitter, because regular rider Christophe Soumillon has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Dermot Weld-trained 4-year-old daughter of Shamardal is listed at 6-1 on the morning line off an undefeated season in 2020; she won the G1 Prix Vermeille and the G1 Prix de l'Opera in France this year.

“It complicates things a little,” Weld said. “She takes a bit of knowing and he'd won two Group Ones on her. But that's the way it is.”

Soumillon was also listed to ride Order of Australia in the Mile for trainer Aidan O'Brien. No replacement has yet been named.

Undefeated In 2020, Filly Tarnawa To Take On The Boys In Breeders’ Cup Turf

A winner of all three of her starts in 2020, 4-year-old Tarnawa is expected to join the field for next Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland. According to racingpost.com, the Shamardal filly is generally rated the 3-1 co-second favorite behind Magical (5-2) for the 1 1/2-mile contest.

She could provide trainer Dermot Weld with his first Breeders' Cup victory in the Turf. Tarnawa is cross-entered in the Filly & Mare Turf, but Weld expects to run the dual Group 1 winner against males instead. Christophe Soumillon will have the mount.

“I think it's pretty certain she'll go for the Breeders' Cup Turf,” Weld told racingpost.com. “It's a tight, turning track with a short straight and the draw is very important in the Filly & Mare Turf, so if you're unlucky enough to get a bad draw it doesn't help your chances. You've got a better chance of overcoming that in the Breeders' Cup Turf.”

This season, Tarnawa has put together wins in the G3 Give Thanks Stakes on Aug. 8, the G1 Prix Vermeille on Sept. 13, and the G1 Prix de l'Opera on Oct. 4. A homebred for the Aga Khan, Tarnawa's career record stands at seven wins from 13 starts.

Other horses pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup Turf include: Arklow, Channel Maker, Donjah, Lord North, Magical, Mean Mary, Mehdaayih, Mogul, Red King, Tarnawa, and United.

Tarnawa on Song for Breeders’ Cup

MG1SW Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) is in good form heading toward a start in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on Nov. 7. The 4-year-old filly who races in the colours of His Highness The Aga Khan is cross entered in both the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf and the GI Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf. Christophe Soumillon has the ride. The chestnut has won all three starts this year beginning in the G3 Give Thanks S. at Cork on Aug. 8. She later added the Sept. 13 G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille and the Oct. 4 G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines, both at ParisLongchamp.

“I’ve been delighted with Tarnawa,” said trainer Dermot Weld. “We purposefully planned an autumn campaign with her. She won the Prix Vermeille very nicely and went back and won the Prix de l’Opera and has progressed from those two Group 1 wins. We’ve kept her on the same training schedule. She’s a very straightforward filly to train. She did a nice bit of sharp work last week and I was very happy with the way she went.

“It’s pretty certain that she’ll go to the Turf. It’s a pretty tight track with a short straight and there will likely be a bigger field in the Filly & Mare race, so the chance of getting a bad draw increases. Christophe Soumillon will definitely ride her. I thought he gave her two perfect rides when she won her two Group 1s and you don’t break a winning combination.”

Stradivarius Will Try To Regain His Crown In British Champions Long Distance Cup

The world's top rated stayer, Stradivarius stands out among the 15 entries still in the mix for the £300,000 (approximately US$350,000) QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The exceptional 6-year-old, bred and owned by Bjorn Nielsen, won the Qatar Goodwood Cup for a record fourth time at Goodwood in July, having landed the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot for the third time the previous month.

Trained by John Gosden, Stradivarius has won a record 13 races that fall under the QIPCO British Champions Series umbrella, including the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup in 2018. He has run 13 times over two miles or further and been beaten just twice – when a length third to Order Of St George as a 3-year-old in the 2017 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup and when pipped a nose by Kew Gardens in last year's riveting renewal.

The opposition to Stradivarius is headed by two-time Comer Group International Irish St Leger winner Search For A Song. She will be having her first run over two miles but has hinted she will stay and her trainer, Dermot Weld, has been responsible for two previous Long Distance Cup winners in Rite Of Passage (2012) and Forgotten Rules (2014).

Andrew Balding has two possible challengers in Spanish Mission, fluent winner of the Doncaster Cup on his latest start, and the mud-loving Morando, whose exploits last season included an eight-length drubbing of Kew Gardens in the Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes at Chester.

Balding said: “Spanish Mission was very impressive in the Doncaster Cup last time but I would have thought he would be effective from a mile and a half to an extended two miles. He's a horse who historically has not wanted the ground too soft, so that's a concern for him. If the ground got pretty testing, we'd have to think twice about running him.

“Morando, on the other hand, loves it when the mud is flying. It would be a new venture going two miles with him but the way he's shaped in his races in the last two seasons suggests that two miles is well within his compass now and he goes well at Ascot.”

Fujaira Prince, trained by Roger Varian, was returning from a year off when an emphatic winner of the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot in June and followed up in the Sky Bet Ebor at York two months later. He chased home Search For A Song in the Irish St Leger last time out.

Aidan O'Brien has won the race three times with Fame And Glory (2011), Order Of St George (2017) and Kew Gardens (2019). This time he could be represented by Sovereign, winner of last year's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby; Broome, who was a close fourth in last year's Investec Derby; and Dawn Patrol, third in this year's Irish Derby.
