The Derby Bubble Presented By Kentucky-Breds: Did Mo Donegal, Taiba, Or Zandon Soar Highest With Signature Wins?

The Kentucky Derby is fast approaching, which means it's time for detailed looks at the horses that could fill the starting gate with Andrew Champagne of Catena Media and The Saratogian's Pink Sheet.

Check the Paulick Report every week for updated rankings that include news, notes, and opinions on the 3-year-olds that figure to take center stage.

The 100-point Kentucky Derby preps have come and gone. All that's left on the road to the Run for the Roses is Saturday's Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, which serves as a last resort for connections with horses on the outside looking in.

As you may expect given the results of this past weekend, there are some pretty major shifts in these rankings.

Let's dive right in!

Kentucky-bred contenders will be highlighted in red, and will receive additional analysis into their breeders, broodmares, and auction histories. Pedigree notes are written by Joe Nevills.

#1: Epicenter

Pedigree: Not This Time – Silent Candy (by Candy Ride)

Owner: Winchell Thoroughbreds

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Kentucky Derby points: 164

Epicenter didn't just win the G2 Louisiana Derby. He did it in exactly the right way. He showed he could rate just off the speed, even taking some dirt in his face going up the backstretch. When called upon, he swooped past the front-runners and had plenty left late. It was as perfect a final prep as the connections could've hoped for, and he may very well be your Kentucky Derby favorite.

Epicenter was bred in Kentucky by Westwind Farms, out of the Grade 3-placed stakes winner Silent Candy. He sold for $260,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Westwind Farms bought Silent Candy pregnant to Scat Daddy for $130,000 in 2014.

#2: Taiba

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Needmore Flattery (by Flatter)

Owner: Zedan Racing Stables

Trainer: Tim Yakteen

Kentucky Derby points: 100

An unraced maiden less than six weeks ago, Taiba emerged as a possible Kentucky Derby favorite with a win in Saturday's G1 Santa Anita Derby. He topped stablemate Messier and San Felipe winner Forbidden Kingdom and did so in professional fashion, looking like anything but a lightly-raced 3-year-old going two turns for the first time. Can a horse with just two starts under his belt win the Kentucky Derby? We'll find out in just a few short weeks.

Taiba was bred in Kentucky by Bruce Ryan, out of the 14-time stakes-winning Flatter mare Needmore Flattery. The dam was a homebred for Ryan and Tim Hamm's Blazing Meadows Farm. Taiba sold as a yearling for $140,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale, and he later brought $1.7 million at the following year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Selected 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale.

#3: Zandon

Pedigree: Upstart – Memories Prevail (by Creative Cause)

Owner: Jeff Drown

Trainer: Chad Brown

Kentucky Derby points: 114

I took Zandon out of the rankings last week due to an influx of 100-point horses. It had nothing to do with Zandon's talent or potential, but he needed to run well in the G1 Blue Grass to make the field. In rallying from way back beneath a masterful ride from Flavien Prat, he did just that and showed a lot of the traits one looks for in a potential Derby horse. Brown has yet to win the Derby, and this may be one of the better chances he's had to date.

Zandon was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones of Airdrie Stud, and the colt is the first foal to race out of the unraced dam. Zandon sold as a yearling for $170,000 from the Airdrie Stud consignment.

#4: Messier

Pedigree: Empire Maker – Checkered Past (by Smart Strike)

Owner: SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable, and Siena Farm

Trainer: Tim Yakteen

Kentucky Derby points: 40

I can't ding Messier too much for losing to Taiba in the Santa Anita Derby. He wasn't far off a pretty fast pace, and he was 10 lengths clear of that day's third-place finisher. It's entirely possible he needed the race off of a brief freshening, and as nice as it would've been to win it, it was another Derby that's long been the main goal for these connections. In running second, Messier punched his ticket to that dance, and he'll have every chance to turn the tables on his stablemate in that event.

#5: White Abarrio

Pedigree: Race Day – Catching Diamonds (by Into Mischief)

Owner: C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable

Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr.

Kentucky Derby points: 112

White Abarrio jumped up a few spots after his win in the G1 Florida Derby, where he topped Charge It, Simplification, and Classic Causeway, among others. He's never lost at Gulfstream Park, and if his Florida form travels to Kentucky with him, he'll have every chance to give his young trainer his first Kentucky Derby victory.

White Abarrio was bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, and he is the first foal out of the Into Mischief mare Catching Diamonds. He sold as a newly-turned yearling for $7,500 at the 2020 OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Spendthrift purchased Catching Diamonds as a yearling for $425,000.

#6: Smile Happy

Pedigree: Runhappy – Pleasant Smile (by Pleasant Tap)

Owner: Lucky Seven Stable

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 70

Similar to Messier, who maintains a high spot despite losing to Taiba, I can't knock Smile Happy too much for his runner-up finish in the Blue Grass. He was wide around both turns and close to the pace on a day where Keeneland's main track wasn't kind to early speed. He still ran well, but was just second-best on the day. We know Smile Happy likes Churchill Downs, and the Derby will be the third start of his form cycle. He has every chance to be sitting on his best race when it matters most.

Smile Happy was bred in Kentucky by Moreau Bloodstock International Inc. and White Bloodstock LLC, out of the winning Pleasant Tap mare Pleasant Smile, whose four starters are all winners, also including the stakes-placed Wilko Rum, by Wilko. Smile Happy sold as a weanling for $175,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, and later brought $185,000 at the Keeneland September Sale.

#7: Charge It

Pedigree: Tapit – I'll Take Charge (by Indian Charlie)

Owner: Whisper Hill Farm

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 40

Charge It made just the third start of his young career in the Florida Derby, which doubled as his first try around two turns. He ran in spurts, but did enough to finish second and sew up a spot in the Kentucky Derby field. Several accomplished horses finished behind him on Saturday, and given his inexperience, he's certainly got the potential to move forward. Add in the presence of Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, and you have a runner that merits plenty of attention.

Charge It is a Kentucky homebred for Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm, out of the Indian Charlie mare I'll Take Charge. Pope bought the dam as a yearling for $2.2 million at the 2013 Keeneland September sale.

#8: Mo Donegal

Pedigree: Uncle Mo – Callingmissbrown (by Pulpit)

Owner: Donegal Racing

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 112

Mo Donegal returned to the scene of his best win to date Saturday and did himself one better. The winner of last year's G2 Remsen added the G2 Wood Memorial beneath a perfectly-timed move from jockey Joel Rosario, who ran down Early Voting in the shadow of the wire. Rosario likely won't be aboard in Kentucky, but likely rider Irad Ortiz, Jr., is as good a replacement as one can hope to find at this stage.

Mo Donegal was bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables. He brought $250,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale.

#9: Cyberknife

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Awesome Flower (by Flower Alley)

Owner: Gold Square LLC

Trainer: Brad Cox

Kentucky Derby points: 100

Cyberknife punched his ticket to Kentucky with a win in the G1 Arkansas Derby. Unlike heavy favorite Secret Oath and runner-up Barber Road, Cyberknife had a clean trip and made the most of it. His record looks far better if you toss the dud he ran in the G3 Lecomte, and just a few weeks after having no 3-year-olds on the Derby leaderboard, Cox now has a pair in the field.

Cyberknife was bred in Kentucky by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, out of the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Awesome Flower, who the Ramseys claimed for $30,000 at Gulfstream Park in 2012. The colt sold for $400,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Sale.

#10: Early Voting

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Amour d'Ete (by Tiznow)

Owner: Klaravich Stables

Trainer: Chad Brown

Kentucky Derby points: 50

Early Voting did everything but win in the Wood Memorial. While he made the lead, he had to work to get there, and he still had nearly enough to repel the challenge of Mo Donegal. These connections once skipped the Derby with a lightly-raced horse that went on to win the Preakness (Cloud Computing, in 2017), but as Brown noted in an interview with DRF's David Grening, the owner/trainer tag team had another Derby horse that year (Practical Joke).

Early Voting was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm, and he sold as a yearling for $200,000. Three Chimneys bought Amour d'Ete, a half-sister to top sire Speightstown, as a yearling for $1.75 million.

[Story Continues Below]

#11: Simplification

Pedigree: Not This Time – Simply Confection (by Candy Ride)

Owner: Tami Bobo

Trainer: Antonio Sano

Kentucky Derby points: 74

Simplification finished third behind White Abarrio and Charge It in the Florida Derby, and in an age where many top 3-year-olds will have two preps under their belts, it's impressive to see four here. He won the G2 Fountain of Youth and Mucho Macho Man and was second in the G3 Holy Bull.

#12: Zozos

Pedigree: Munnings – Papa's Forest (by Forestry)

Owner: Barry and Joni Butzow

Trainer: Brad Cox

Kentucky Derby points: 40

Zozos ran well when second in the Louisiana Derby. He set a legitimate pace under pressure, and while he was no match for Epicenter, he held second and secured enough points to get him to Kentucky. The pedigree doesn't exactly scream “a mile and a quarter,” but the 1 3/16-mile distance of the Louisiana Derby didn't seem like too much of a problem. With only three starts under his belt, he may have more room to improve.

Zozos is a Kentucky homebred for Barry and Joni Butzow, out of the winning Forestry mare Papa's Forest. The Butzows purchased Papa's Forest as a yearling for $57,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September sale, and she made $233,593 on the racetrack.

#13: Barber Road

Pedigree: Race Day – Encounter (by Southern Image)

Owner: WSS Racing, LLC

Trainer: John Ortiz

Kentucky Derby points: 58

There's something to be said for a horse that just doesn't run a bad race. With the exception of his debut, he's never been worse than third, and that includes five starts in stakes company. He salvaged second behind Cyberknife in the Arkansas Derby, and in doing so, he earned enough Derby points to make the field.

Barber Road was bred in Kentucky by Susan Forrester and Judy Curry, out of the unplaced Southern Image mare Encounter. The mare was a $1,000 purchase out of the 2015 Keeneland November Sale by Scott Conlee, who bred Encounter's future foals in partnership with Forrester and Curry until the latter two acquired full ownership. Barber Road sold as a weanling for $15,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale.

#14: Tiz the Bomb

Pedigree: Hit it a Bomb – Tiz the Key (by Tiznow)

Owner: Magdalena Racing

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 110

All systems appear “go” for Tiz the Bomb to try dirt again on the biggest stage possible. After an early-season misfire, he won back-to-back Derby preps over Turfway Park's synthetic surface, including the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks (now a 100-point prep). He's got tons of talent, and the distance shouldn't be an issue given his pedigree…but can he run on dirt?

Tiz the Bomb was bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, out of the winning Tiznow mare Tiz the Key. McPeek, acting as agent, purchased Tiz the Bomb for $330,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale. Spendthrift bought Tiz the Key as a yearling for the same price at the 2012 Keeneland September Sale.

#15: Morello

Pedigree: Classic Empire – Stop the Wedding (by Congrats)

Owner: Blue Lion Thoroughbreds, Craig Taylor, and Diamond T Racing

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Kentucky Derby points: 50

Morello lost all chance at the start of the Wood Memorial and ran last in that event. It was his first start around two turns, and while it's easy to say the race is a throw-out given his poor break, he also didn't do anything to answer the question, “can he go long?” His connections haven't ruled out a spot in the Derby, though, and he'd be safely in the field should they chart a course for that event.

Morello was bred in Kentucky by Robert B. Tillyer and Dr. Chet Blackey, out of the Congrats mare Stop the Wedding. The colt sold as a weanling for $140,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, then he brought $200,000 at the following year's Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale. In 2021, Morello sold for $250,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Stop the Wedding was an $11,000 purchase, pregnant to Cairo Prince, by Tillyer at the 2020 Keeneland January Sale.

#16: Un Ojo

Pedigree: Laoban – Risk a Chance (by A.P. Indy)

Owner: Cypress Creek Equine

Trainer: Ricky Courville

Kentucky Derby points: 54

Un Ojo had a very rough trip in the Arkansas Derby, and he's got a set of staples in his left shoulder to show for it. His connections are still hopeful he'll be ready for the Derby. Should he be in good shape leading up to the race, his upset win in the G2 Rebel means he'll have more than enough points to go postward.

#17: Slow Down Andy

Pedigree: Nyquist – Edwina E (by Square Eddie)

Owner: Reddam Racing

Trainer: Doug O'Neill

Kentucky Derby points: 60

Best known for topping Messier in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity last year, Slow Down Andy punched his ticket to Kentucky with a win in the G3 Sunland Park Derby. Even though, “who did he beat in New Mexico?,” is a very valid question, it's worth noting O'Neill has won the Derby twice. He conditioned Hot Rod Charlie to a second-place finish a season ago.

#18: Tawny Port

Pedigree: Pioneerof the Nile – Livi Makenzie (by Macho Uno)

Owner: Peachtree Stable

Trainer: Brad Cox

Kentucky Derby points: 40

Saturday's a big day for team Tawny Port. Just two weeks after running second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks, he'll go postward for the Lexington needing a top-four finish to secure his spot in the Kentucky Derby field. While he's run well in three starts at Turfway (with two wins prior to running second to Tiz the Bomb), his lone try on dirt to date was a distant fifth behind Epicenter in the G2 Risen Star.

Tawny Port was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, out of the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Livi Makenzie. The colt sold to Fort for $430,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. WinStar Farm bought Livi Makenzie as a broodmare prospect for $190,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale, and the operation sold her pregnant to Always Dreaming for $30,000 at the same sale in 2020.

#19: Crown Pride

Pedigree: Reach the Crown – Emmy's Pride (by King Kamehameha)

Owner: Teruya Yoshida

Trainer: Koichi Shintani

Kentucky Derby points: 100

With his win in the Group 2 UAE Derby, Crown Pride ensured himself a spot in the Kentucky Derby field. Given the focus on stamina and longevity within the Japanese breeding program, it seems likely they'll win a Derby at some point. I'm just not sure this is the year that happens.

#20: Summer Is Tomorrow

Pedigree: Summer Front – Always Tomorrow (by Badge of Silver)

Owner: Michael and Negar Burke

Trainer: Bhupat Seemar

Kentucky Derby points: 40

The connections of the UAE Derby runner-up have said they're planning to ship to Kentucky, since their colt has enough points to make the field. He's won two of seven starts in Dubai ahead of his trip to the U.S., and based on his current resume, it's tough to see him as anything other than the longest of longshots.

Summer Is Tomorrow was bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones of Airdrie Stud, out of the winning Badge of Silver mare Always Tomorrow, who Jones bought for $20,000 at the 2015 Keeneland January Sale. The colt initially sold as a weanling for $25,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, and he later brought $169,743 at the 2021 Arqana Deauville Breeze Up Sale.

The Derby Bubble Presented By Kentucky-Breds: White Abarrio, Cyberknife Rocket Up The Charts

Three major Kentucky Derby preps came and went on Saturday. With those races came sweeping changes in the points standings and these rankings, and more of those are still in store with several 100-point races yet to be run.

As a reminder, this list serves as a hybrid of sorts. If a horse has earned enough Derby points to make the field, he'll be on this list. However, that doesn't mean an exceptionally-talented 3-year-old without sufficient points will be ignored if it's eyeing a race that could serve as a springboard to the first Saturday in May.

Without further ado, let's take a look!

Epicenter didn't just win the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby.

#2: Messier

Pedigree: Empire Maker – Checkered Past (by Smart Strike)

Owner: SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable, and Siena Farm

Trainer: Tim Yakteen

Kentucky Derby points: 0

We know the story here. Unable to earn Kentucky Derby points in the care of Bob Baffert, and with time ticking away, the owners of Messier (and a few other horses) moved three runners to Yakteen and one to Rodolphe Brisset. Messier certainly has the talent to be a factor in Kentucky. His romp in the G3 Bob Lewis was exceptional, and he's on a collision course with Forbidden Kingdom in the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

#3: White Abarrio

Pedigree: Race Day – Catching Diamonds (by Into Mischief)

Owner: C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable

Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr.

Kentucky Derby points: 112

White Abarrio jumps up a few spots after his win in the G1 Florida Derby, where he topped Charge It, Simplification, and Classic Causeway, among others.

#4: Smile Happy

Pedigree: Runhappy – Pleasant Smile (by Pleasant Tap)

Owner: Lucky Seven Stable

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 30

Smile Happy was certainly flattered by the Louisiana Derby. He was second to Epicenter in the G2 Risen Star, which doubles as this one's lone 2022 race to date. He may already have enough Derby points to qualify for a spot in the field, but we'll see him again in the G2 Blue Grass at Keeneland.

#5: Charge It

#6: Cyberknife

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Awesome Flower (by Flower Alley)

Owner: Gold Square LLC

Trainer: Brad Cox

Kentucky Derby points: 100

New to the rankings, Cyberknife punched his ticket to Kentucky with a win in Saturday's G1 Arkansas Derby. Unlike heavy favorite Secret Oath and runner-up Barber Road, Cyberknife had a clean trip and made the most of it. His record looks far better if you toss the dud he ran in the G3 Lecomte, and just a few weeks after having no 3-year-olds on the Derby leaderboard, trainer Brad Cox now has a pair in the field.

#7: Simplification

Pedigree: Not This Time – Simply Confection (by Candy Ride)

Owner: Tami Bobo

Trainer: Antonio Sano

Kentucky Derby points: 74

Simplification finished third behind White Abarrio and Charge It in the Florida Derby, and in an age where many top 3-year-olds will have two preps under their belts, it's impressive to see four here. He won the G2 Fountain of Youth and Mucho Macho Man and was second in the G3 Holy Bull.

#8: Mo Donegal

Pedigree: Uncle Mo – Callingmissbrown (by Pulpit)

Owner: Donegal Racing

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 12

Mo Donegal ran in spurts when third in the Holy Bull, and was beaten just a sliver by Simplification that day. He runs like a horse that will get better with experience and maturity, not to mention one that shouldn't be bothered by more distance. The G2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct is up next, and it's likely he'll be favored in that spot.

Mo Donegal was bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables. He brought $250,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale.

#9: Forbidden Kingdom

Pedigree: American Pharoah – Just Louise (by Five Star Day)

Owner: MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm

Trainer: Richard Mandella

Kentucky Derby points: 50

It's tough to see the Santa Anita Derby as anything other than a two-horse race. Forbidden Kingdom and Messier stand head and shoulders above the rest of the 3-year-old males in California. The big question: Can Forbidden Kingdom replicate his G2 San Felipe effort if he's challenged up front early on? We'll find out sooner rather than later in California's biggest Kentucky Derby prep.

Forbidden Kingdom was bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm, out of the Grade 3 winner Just Louise. He sold to his current ownership for $300,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Sale. Springhouse Farm acquired Just Louise pregnant to Malibu Moon for $150,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

#10: Classic Causeway

Pedigree: Giant's Causeway – Private World (by Thunder Gulch)

Owner: Kentucky West Racing and Cooper Clarke

Trainer: Brian Lynch

Kentucky Derby points: 66

It's concerning that Classic Causeway misfired in such a big way in the Florida Derby. He led early but dropped anchor going around the far turn. The good news is that he apparently came out of the race in good order, and his connections haven't ruled out a run in the Derby. For that reason, he maintains a spot on this list (though one that's a significant downgrade from where he's been most of the spring).

Classic Causeway is a homebred for Kentucky West Racing LLC  and the Clarke M. Cooper Family Living Trust, out of the stakes winner Private World, who is the dam of five winners from eight runners. Private World is herself a Kentucky West homebred.

#11: Early Voting

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Amour d'Ete (by Tiznow)

Owner: Klaravich Stables

Trainer: Chad Brown

Kentucky Derby points: 10

While the G3 Withers didn't move the needle on first viewing, that day's runner-up, Un Ojo, came back to pull off a shocking upset in the G2 Rebel, and fourth-place finisher Grantham ran second in the Tampa Bay Derby. That may mean there's more than what meets the eye when it comes to that early-season prep at Aqueduct, which this son of Gun Runner won in convincing fashion. He'll take on Mo Donegal (among others) in the Wood Memorial.

Early Voting was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm, and he sold as a yearling for $200,000. Three Chimneys bought Amour d'Ete, a half-sister to top sire Speightstown, as a yearling for $1.75 million.

#13: In Due Time

Pedigree: Not This Time – Sweet Sweet Annie (by Curlin)

Owner: Edge Racing

Trainer: Kelly Breen

Kentucky Derby points: 20

In Due Time missed the Florida Derby, and he'll be pointed to a later prep after needing extra time following the chaotic Fountain of Youth. He, of course, was second in that race, with some believing jockey Paco Lopez caused a chain reaction that ended with two horses falling and dropping their riders.

In Due Time was bred in Kentucky by Gary and Mary West Stables Inc., and he is the first foal out of the unraced Sweet Sweet Annie. The Wests bought Sweet Sweet Annie with In Due Time in utero for $115,000.

#14: Morello

Pedigree: Classic Empire – Stop the Wedding (by Congrats)

Owner: Blue Lion Thoroughbreds, Craig Taylor, and Diamond T Racing

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Kentucky Derby points: 50

Morello moved to 3-for-3 with a professional score in the G3 Gotham at Aqueduct. It's entirely possible he didn't beat much in that effort, but he did it the right way. There are still some stamina questions here, as he hasn't gone two turns yet, but he was moving away from that field late and doing so pretty easily. Much like with Forbidden Kingdom, Morello's next start will likely come in deeper waters, and we'll see if he sinks or swims.

#15: Barber Road

#16: Tiz the Bomb

Pedigree: Hit it a Bomb – Tiz the Key (by Tiznow)

Owner: Magdalena Racing

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 110

We're still not sure which Derby Tiz the Bomb will run in. After a misfire on dirt, the connections said the Group 1 Epsom Derby was the primary target. However, he's since won a pair of Kentucky Derby preps, including the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks.

#17: Un Ojo

Pedigree: Laoban – Risk a Chance (by A.P. Indy)

Owner: Cypress Creek Equine

Trainer: Ricky Courville

Kentucky Derby points: 54

Un Ojo had a very rough trip in the Arkansas Derby, and he's got a set of staples in his left shoulder to show for it. His connections are still hopeful he'll be ready for the Derby. Should he be in good shape leading up to the race, his upset win in the G2 Rebel means he'll have more than enough points to go postward.

#18: Slow Down Andy

Pedigree: Nyquist – Edwina E (by Square Eddie)

Owner: Reddam Racing

Trainer: Doug O'Neill

Kentucky Derby points: 60

Best known for topping Messier in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity last year, Slow Down Andy punched his ticket to Kentucky with a win in the G3 Sunland Park Derby. As such, he returns to this list, even though, “who did he beat in New Mexico?,” is a very valid question. O'Neill has won the Derby twice, and he conditioned Hot Rod Charlie to a second-place finish a season ago.

The Derby Bubble Presented By Kentucky-Breds: Seismic Changes And Settling Waters

The final round of Kentucky Derby preps are officially in full swing. These are where we'll learn a lot about some horses, and this past week provided plenty of education (plus a few key news items that have led to significant changes to this list).

Let's take a look!

Epicenter didn't just win the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby.

#3: Smile Happy

Pedigree: Runhappy – Pleasant Smile (by Pleasant Tap)

Owner: Lucky Seven Stable

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 30

Smile Happy was certainly flattered by the Louisiana Derby. He was second to Epicenter in the G2 Risen Star, which doubles as this one's lone 2022 race to date. He may already have enough Derby points to qualify for a spot in the field, but we'll see him again in the G2 Blue Grass at Keeneland next month.

#4: Classic Causeway

Pedigree: Giant's Causeway – Private World (by Thunder Gulch)

Owner: Kentucky West Racing and Cooper Clarke

Trainer: Brian Lynch

Kentucky Derby points: 66

We've got an audible here, as the winner of the G2 Tampa Bay Derby and G3 Sam F. Davis will face White Abarrio and Simplification (among others) in Saturday's G1 Florida Derby. It's a pretty quick wheel-back, as this one ran three weeks ago and coasted home to an easy score. The going gets significantly tougher, however, on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Classic Causeway is a homebred for Kentucky West Racing LLC  and the Clarke M. Cooper Family Living Trust, out of the stakes winner Private World, who is the dam of five winners from eight runners. Private World is herself a Kentucky West homebred.

#5: White Abarrio

Pedigree: Race Day – Catching Diamonds (by Into Mischief)

Owner: C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable

Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr.

Kentucky Derby points: 12

White Abarrio's win in the G3 Holy Bull was incredibly sharp. However, it carried just 10 Kentucky Derby points, meaning his connections can't afford a misfire on Saturday against what's shaping up to be an excellent group. If he can improve upon what we saw in February, he's got a big chance, but he may have to do just that.

#6: Simplification

Pedigree: Not This Time – Simply Confection (by Candy Ride)

Owner: Tami Bobo

Trainer: Antonio Sano

Kentucky Derby points: 54

Second in the Holy Bull and first in the G2 Fountain of Youth, Simplification stayed out of trouble in the latter race and proved much the best. He was a distant second behind White Abarrio in his first Kentucky Derby prep, and Classic Causeway looms large as well, but there's every chance that this one is coming into form at the right time.

#7: Mo Donegal

#8: Forbidden Kingdom

#9: Early Voting

#10: Zozos

Pedigree: Munnings – Papa's Forest (by Forestry)

Owner: Barry and Joni Butzow

Trainer: Brad Cox

Kentucky Derby points: 40

New to the rankings, Zozos ran well when second in the Louisiana Derby.

[Story Continues Below]

#11: In Due Time

Pedigree: Not This Time – Sweet Sweet Annie (by Curlin)

Owner: Edge Racing

Trainer: Kelly Breen

Kentucky Derby points: 20

A lot of familiar names will contest the Florida Derby, but In Due Time isn't on that list. Per DRF, he'll be pointed to a later prep after needing extra time following the chaotic Fountain of Youth.

#12: Morello

#13: Secret Oath

Pedigree: Arrogate – Absinthe Minded (by Quiet American)

Owner: Briland Farm

Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas

Kentucky Derby points: 0

Okay, let's see what the filly's made of. She'll go up against the boys in this weekend's G1 Arkansas Derby, and it sure doesn't seem like any monsters are set to line up against her. If she can channel her form from her two stakes wins at Oaklawn Park, she'll be a handful, and a top-two finish would make for a very popular storyline heading into the first Saturday in May.

Secret Oath was homebred in Kentucky by Briland Farm, Robert Mitchell, and Stacy Mitchell. She is out of the multiple Grade 1-placed stakes winner Absinthe Minded, who is also a homebred for the same connections.

#14: Charge It

Pedigree: Tapit – I'll Take Charge (by Indian Charlie)

Owner: Whisper Hill Farm

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 0

This is another runner set to face a significant class test. Last seen breaking his maiden in eye-catching fashion, Charge It will tackle Grade 1 company in the Florida Derby. There were a number of places Charge It could have gone for his first try against winners. Rather than a first-level allowance, he's trained right up to the biggest spot of his career.

Charge It is a Kentucky homebred for Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm, out of the Indian Charlie mare I'll Take Charge. Pope bought the dam as a yearling for $2.2 million at the 2013 Keeneland September sale.

#15: Zandon

Pedigree: Upstart – Memories Prevail (by Creative Cause)

Owner: Jeff Drown

Trainer: Chad Brown

Kentucky Derby points: 14

Zandon hasn't been seen since running third in the Risen Star behind Epicenter and Smile Happy. Prior to that, he ran Mo Donegal to a photo finish in the Remsen, so we know two turns won't be an issue. His next start is set for the Blue Grass at Keeneland, where he'll once again meet up with Smile Happy.

Zandon was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones of Airdrie Stud, and the colt is the first foal to race out of the unraced dam. Zandon sold as a yearling for $170,000 from the Airdrie Stud consignment.

#16: Rattle N Roll

Pedigree: Connect – Jazz Tune (by Johannesburg)

Owner: Lucky Seven Stable

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 20

Rattle N Roll showed a bit of improvement second off the bench. That step forward, though, wasn't enough to challenge the top three in the Louisiana Derby, and he settled for fourth and only 10 more Derby points. Perhaps the track played a bit kind to early speed that day, and the quick run-back means a run in a race like the G3 Lexington is a possibility. However, he's still got some going to do to run to the potential he showed as a 2-year-old.

Rattle N Roll was bred in Kentucky by St. Simon Place. The colt sold as a weanling for $55,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, then brought $210,000 as a yearling. St. Simon Place acquired Jazz Tune pregnant to Mineshaft for $20,000 in 2016, and sold her for $585,000 pregnant to Liam's Map at the 2021 Keeneland November Sale.

#17: Un Ojo

Pedigree: Laoban – Risk a Chance (by A.P. Indy)

Owner: Cypress Creek Equine

Trainer: Ricky Courville

Kentucky Derby points: 54

The one-eyed upset winner of the G2 Rebel will be back in action in the Arkansas Derby. He's already got enough points for a spot in the Kentucky Derby, but it'll be interesting to see if the New York-bred can repeat the race we saw last time out. If Secret Oath shows up and puts forth the type of effort we've come to expect, this gelding may have to step up in order to run with her.

#18: Pioneer of Medina

Pedigree: Pioneerof the Nile – Lights of Medina (by Eskendereya)

Owner: Sumaya U.S. Stable

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 25

Pioneer of Medina enters this list after checking in third in the Louisiana Derby. He got loose prior to the race, but showed no ill effects once the gates were sprung (though he was no threat to Epicenter and couldn't get past Zozos for second). That effort, combined with a fourth-place finish in the Risen Star, may have given him enough Derby points to qualify for the race.

Pioneer of Medina is a Kentucky homebred for Oussama Aboughazale, through his International Equities Holding, Inc., out of the Grade 2-placed stakes winner Lights of Medina. The colt is a third-generation homebred for Aboughazale, reaching back to Chilean-born fourth dam Medina Sidonia, who was a multiple Group 1 winner in her home country.

#19: Slow Down Andy

#20: Crown Pride

Pedigree: Reach the Crown – Emmy's Pride (by King Kamehameha)

Owner: Teruya Yoshida

Trainer: Koichi Shintani

Kentucky Derby points: 100

With his win in the Group 2 UAE Derby, Crown Pride ensured himself a spot in the Kentucky Derby field. Given the focus on stamina and longevity within the Japanese breeding program, it seems likely they'll win a Derby at some point. I'm just not sure this is the year that happens.

The Derby Bubble Presented By Kentucky Breds: Something Seems Familiar About These Contenders

After a week of no Derby preps, we're trying something new this week. As a one-time change of pace, we're offering historical comparisons for each member of the top-20 list that could prove pretty fun. We'll be back to traditional analysis next week, after the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and G2 UAE Derby are run.

For now, though, let's dive in!

Kentucky Derby points: 64

Comparison: Gun Runner. No, I'm not saying Epicenter will turn into the best horse in the world. However, in the early part of his career, Gun Runner emerged as the top 3-year-old at Fair Grounds with wins in the Risen Star and Louisiana Derby, and then ran third behind Nyquist and Exaggerator in Kentucky. Epicenter won this year's renewal of the former event, will be a heavy favorite in the latter, and may face a lesser group of 3-year-olds on the first Saturday in May than Gun Runner did six years ago.

#2: Smile Happy

Pedigree: Runhappy – Pleasant Smile (by Pleasant Tap)

Owner: Lucky Seven Stable

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 30

Comparison: Repent. McPeek trained that one, too, and we forget how good he was because he didn't get to run in the 2002 Kentucky Derby. Like Smile Happy, he won the Kentucky Jockey Club, and that was one of four graded stakes wins. He ran second in both the 2001 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (behind Johannesburg) and the 2002 Travers (behind Medaglia d'Oro).

#3: Classic Causeway

Pedigree: Giant's Causeway – Private World (by Thunder Gulch)

Owner: Kentucky West Racing and Cooper Clarke

Trainer: Brian Lynch

Kentucky Derby points: 66

Comparison: Destin. Like Classic Causeway, Destin was bred to run all day long, had plenty of tactical speed and pulled off the Sam F. Davis-Tampa Bay Derby double. Destin's pedigree kicked in later in his career, when he ran second in the 2016 Belmont Stakes and won the 2017 Marathon on that year's Breeders' Cup undercard.

Classic Causeway is a homebred for Kentucky West Racing LLC  and the Clarke M. Cooper Family Living Trust, out of the stakes winner Private World, who is the dam of five winners from eight runners. Private World is herself a Kentucky West homebred.

#4: White Abarrio

Pedigree: Race Day – Catching Diamonds (by Into Mischief)

Owner: C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable

Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr.

Kentucky Derby points: 12

Comparison: Upstart. The New York-bred announced his presence with an authoritative score in the 2015 Holy Bull, where he crushed the likes of Frosted and Keen Ice. White Abarrio topped a field that included Simplification and Mo Donegal in his Holy Bull score, and we'll see if he's moved forward from that effort when he goes postward in the Florida Derby.

#5: Simplification

Pedigree: Not This Time – Simply Confection (by Candy Ride)

Owner: Tami Bobo

Trainer: Antonio Sano

Kentucky Derby points: 54

Comparison: Gunnevera. It seems a bit lazy, but it's the only place one can go, given that both Antonio Sano trainees won the Fountain of Youth in impressive fashion. Gunnevera won just twice after his score the 2017 renewal, but did pick up a number of big checks. He was second in both the 2018 Breeders' Cup Classic and 2017 Travers.

#6: Mo Donegal

Pedigree: Uncle Mo – Callingmissbrown (by Pulpit)

Owner: Donegal Racing

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 12

Comparison: Commissioner. Everything about Commissioner screamed “wants to go long” from the moment he broke his maiden going two turns as a 2-year-old at Saratoga. He eventually did everything but win the 2014 Belmont Stakes for Pletcher. Mo Donegal, meanwhile, ran in spurts in the Holy Bull, but won the Remsen going long as an inexperienced 2-year-old.

Mo Donegal was bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables. He brought $250,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale.

#7: Forbidden Kingdom

Pedigree: American Pharoah – Just Louise (by Five Star Day)

Owner: MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm

Trainer: Richard Mandella

Kentucky Derby points: 50

Comparison: Rock Your World. Give a solid horse a perfect, front-running trip in a big race, and that runner may prove tough to top. That's how Rock Your World won last year's Santa Anita Derby, and it's how Forbidden Kingdom won the San Felipe earlier this year in his first two-turn try. The question is, what will Forbidden Kingdom do if he's challenged on the front end early on? We may find out in the Santa Anita Derby next month.

#8: Call Me Midnight

Pedigree: Midnight Lute – Overseen (by First Defence)

Owner: Peter Cantrell

Trainer: Keith Desormeaux

Kentucky Derby points: 10

Comparison: My Boy Jack. Keith Desormeaux conditioned that runner, who won a pair of graded stakes races prior to the 2018 Kentucky Derby. Call Me Midnight is another closer who upset Epicenter in the Lecomte. He'll look to pull that off again in Saturday's Louisiana Derby, and he'll need a strong finish in order to ensure a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.

Call Me Midnight was bred in Kentucky by Hartwell Farm, out of the Juddmonte Farms-bred Overseen. His siblings include the stakes-placed Bayerly Seen, by Bayern. Call Me Midnight sold as a weanling for $25,000, while Hartwell Farm bought the unraced Overseen as a broodmare prospect for $16,000.

#9: Early Voting

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Amour d'Ete (by Tiznow)

Owner: Klaravich Stables

Trainer: Chad Brown

Kentucky Derby points: 10

Comparison: Red Bullet. Red Bullet won the Gotham back in 2000 before finishing second to Fusaichi Pegasus in the Wood Memorial, but he beat that rival in the Preakness. That Gotham aged well, as it also included future Grade 1 winner Aptitude and multiple graded stakes winner Performing Magic. Early Voting, meanwhile, topped future Rebel winner Un Ojo and eventual Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Grantham in his Withers victory at that same venue, so that race, too, may have been more impressive than initially thought.

Early Voting was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm, and he sold as a yearling for $200,000. Three Chimneys bought Amour d'Ete, a half-sister to top sire Speightstown, as a yearling for $1.75 million.

#10: In Due Time

Pedigree: Not This Time – Sweet Sweet Annie (by Curlin)

Owner: Edge Racing

Trainer: Kelly Breen

Kentucky Derby points: 20

Comparison: Materiality. Remember the 2015 Florida Derby? Materiality bumped Upstart, but was left up after an inquiry, leading to a classic Rick Violette quote talking about the stewards racing out of the track. In Due Time, of course, ran second in a roughly-run Fountain of Youth that included a pair of falls around the far turn. We'll see if he gets a clean trip in his next Kentucky Derby prep.

In Due Time was bred in Kentucky by Gary and Mary West Stables Inc., and he is the first foal out of the unraced Sweet Sweet Annie. The Wests bought Sweet Sweet Annie with In Due Time in utero for $115,000.

[Story Continues Below]

#11: Morello

Pedigree: Classic Empire – Stop the Wedding (by Congrats)

Owner: Blue Lion Thoroughbreds, Craig Taylor, and Diamond T Racing

Trainer: Steve Asmussen

Kentucky Derby points: 50

Comparison: Vyjack. Like Morello, Vyjack was undefeated both before and after his win in the Gotham. That came in 2013, and while he competed in that year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, his best races came going shorter. He reinvented himself as a miler, winning the 2014 Kelso at Belmont and the 2016 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita. Morello has yet to go two turns, but if that proves too far, there are plenty of options for him moving forward.

#12: Secret Oath

Pedigree: Arrogate – Absinthe Minded (by Quiet American)

Owner: Briland Farm

Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas

Kentucky Derby points: 0

Comparison: Take Charge Brandi. Lukas toyed with the idea of running his champion against boys in 2015. However, she was injured after her win in the Martha Washington and ran just twice more later that year before being retired. Secret Oath, however, will get her chance against open company in the upcoming Arkansas Derby.

Secret Oath was homebred in Kentucky by Briland Farm, Robert Mitchell, and Stacy Mitchell. She is out of the multiple Grade 1-placed stakes winner Absinthe Minded, who is also a homebred for the same connections.

#13: Charge It

Pedigree: Tapit – I'll Take Charge (by Indian Charlie)

Owner: Whisper Hill Farm

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Kentucky Derby points: 0

Comparison: Always Dreaming. Like Charge It, Always Dreaming had zero Kentucky Derby points going into the Florida Derby. The late-blooming Pletcher trainee, of course, won both races, and I think it's telling Mo Donegal was re-routed to the Wood Memorial while this runner (still eligible for a non-winners of one allowance) had a course charted for the Florida Derby.

Charge It is a Kentucky homebred for Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm, out of the Indian Charlie mare I'll Take Charge. Pope bought the dam as a yearling for $2.2 million at the 2013 Keeneland September sale.

#14: Zandon

Pedigree: Upstart – Memories Prevail (by Creative Cause)

Owner: Jeff Drown

Trainer: Chad Brown

Kentucky Derby points: 14

Comparison: Normandy Invasion. One of Chad Brown's first Derby prospects won just once ahead of the 2013 event, but he finished a competitive fourth behind Orb in that race. Zandon found the winner's circle in his career debut last fall, and has since collected minor awards in a pair of graded stakes races.

Zandon was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones of Airdrie Stud, and the colt is the first foal to race out of the unraced dam. Zandon sold as a yearling for $170,000 from the Airdrie Stud consignment.

#15: Rattle N Roll

Pedigree: Connect – Jazz Tune (by Johannesburg)

Owner: Lucky Seven Stable

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 10

Comparison: Sky Mesa. A multiple Grade 1 winner as a 2-year-old, Sky Mesa missed most of his 3-year-old season, but did run second in that year's Haskell behind Peace Rules (and ahead of Funny Cide). Rattle N Roll also missed significant time, and he'll look to rebound from a disappointing return in the Fountain of Youth in this week's Louisiana Derby.

#16: Shipsational

Pedigree: Midshipman – Regal Approach (by Thunder Gulch)

Owner: Iris Smith Stable

Trainer: Edward Barker

Kentucky Derby points: 14

Comparison: International Star. Both hard-knocking New York-breds, Shipsational and International Star have collected plenty of checks in big spots. International Star swept the 2015 preps at Fair Grounds, but missed the summer of his 3-year-old season and won just once the rest of his career. Shipsational, meanwhile, has chased Classic Causeway twice and may need one more big run prior to the first Saturday in May in order to make the Derby field.

#17: Pappacap

Pedigree: Gun Runner – Pappascat (by Scat Daddy)

Owner: Rustlewood Farm

Trainer: Mark Casse

Kentucky Derby points: 14

Comparison: Klimt. The Bob Baffert charge won the Best Pal and Del Mar Futurity, but two turns proved a bit too far. He was winless in four route races. Pappacap, meanwhile, has danced in several big dances, but after winning the Best Pal last summer at Del Mar, he's yet to find the winner's circle in any race going long.

#18: Grantham

Pedigree: Declaration of War – Darby Blush (by Arch)

Owner: Three Diamonds Farm

Trainer: Mike Maker

Kentucky Derby points: 21

Comparison: Oscar Nominated. Also a Mike Maker trainee, Oscar Nominated found himself in the Derby field, but his best races were run on turf and synthetic. That one banked more than $1.5 million in career earnings and won five stakes races, none on dirt. Grantham did run second in the Tampa Bay Derby, but that was after a picture-perfect, ground-saving trip. His lone win to date came on Turfway Park's synthetic track, and he's bred up and down for that surface and the grass.

Grantham was bred in Kentucky by Winter Creek Farm, and he is the first foal out of the unraced Darby Blush. He sold as a yearling for $100,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale, then he brought $280,000 the following year at the OBS Spring 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale.

#19: Un Ojo

Pedigree: Laoban – Risk a Chance (by A.P. Indy)

Owner: Cypress Creek Equine

Trainer: Ricky Courville

Kentucky Derby points: 54

Comparison: Hero of Order. This is a fun one for some, as Hero of Order pulled off one of the biggest shockers in Kentucky Derby prep race history when he won the 2012 Louisiana Derby at odds of 109-1. He never won again, and the $600,000 he banked that day make up the lion's share of his $747,822 in career earnings. Un Ojo, of course, lit up the tote board in the Rebel, and we'll see if that was a fluke whenever he runs next.

#20: Tiz the Bomb

Pedigree: Hit It a Bomb – Tiz the Key (by Tiznow)

Owner: Magdalena Racing

Trainer: Ken McPeek

Kentucky Derby points: 10

Comparison: Somelikeithotbrown. Also known for winning the infamous 2018 maiden race at Saratoga run at the wrong distance (seriously, how does that happen?), Somelikeithotbrown showed enough on turf for his connections to try the 2019 Blue Grass. He was fourth that day and went back to turf, where he's since turned into one of the more consistent older turf runners in the country. Tiz the Bomb is proven on turf and synthetic. Dirt? Not so much. We'll see if he has an affinity for it in his final try at Kentucky Derby points.
