Hits Pricey Legacy Gives Trout Another Stakes Win In Slide Show

When Hits Pricey Legacy hit the wire 5-1/4 lengths in front in the $75,000 Slide Show Stakes on Friday at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Okla. The victory gave owner-trainer-breeder C.R. Trout his second stakes win of the night.

Jockey Richard Eramia gave Trout, an Edmond, Okla., resident, his first of the night aboard Fast Breakin Cash in the $70,000 Silver Goblin Stakes. Jockey Jose Alvarez was aboard Hits Pricey Legacy for her victory in the Slide Show. She went off the second favorite in the race at 6-5 odds.

Morning Twilight, a $310,000 purchase by West Point Thoroughbreds at the Ocala Breeders Sale in Florida this year, was sent off as the 4-5 wagering favorite after beating Hits Pricey Legacy by 7-1/2 lengths at six furlongs in the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Lassie on Oct. 15. The extra distance, stretching to a mile for the Slide Show and another race under her belt, gave Hits Pricey Legacy the edge she needed to shine.

Morning Twilight was 1-3/4 lengths ahead of third-place finisher Circle Back Girl (18-1). Hits Pricey Legacy paid $4.60 to win, $2.40 to place, and $2.10 to show. She is a juvenile daughter of Den's Legacy, out of the Concord Point mare High Price Hit, and a Trout homebred.

Alvarez kept Hits Pricey Legacy in mid-pack in the early going and took over dominantly at the top of the stretch, ahead by two lengths. She then pulled away without much asking to score the one mile in 1:40.34 over a fast track.

Hits Pricey Legacy earned $45,000 for the trip to the winner's circle and she improved to four starts with two wins and two seconds. Her bankroll bulged to $97,255. It was the first win in the Slide Show stakes for all the connections.

The Slide Show is named in honor of the Oklahoma-bred filly who was near perfect in her career at Remington Park, winning 11 consecutive starts from 1993 to 1995, eight of them stakes events. Her only local defeat came in her final start, when she was third in an allowance event.

The early fractions for the mile race were :24.84 for the quarter-mile, :49.97 for the half-mile, 1:15.71 for three-quarters of a mile, and 1:28.02 for seven eighths. In her four starts, Hits Pricey Legacy broke her maiden on Aug. 27 at first asking at Remington Park. She then was the bridesmaid in the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes on Sept. 26 and in the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Lassie.

Remington Park racing concludes this week with a Saturday night card of nine races. First post time is 7:07 pm Central.

Rowdy Rascal Best In Don C. McNeill Stakes At Remington Park

Rowdy Rascal was full of run Friday night, winning the $75,000 Don C. McNeill Stakes but his owners said that wasn't what he was full of when he was a foal.

“When he was two days old, he was all over his stall and his mother was beside herself,” said owner Theresa Moore of JT Stables of Springdale, Ark. “My dad saw him and said, 'Man, he's a rowdy rascal!' And there you have it.”

Even now, winning the Don McNeill and the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Okla., trainer Boyd “Jobe” Caster says he isn't anywhere near his peak ability because of his rowdiness.

“If he ever takes racing seriously, no telling what he will be able to do,” said Caster. “He is what he is. This is still a game to him. He's so immature. But he should be a nice 3-year-old. He is what he is.”

What he is is a multiple stakes winner and jockey Freddy Manrrique and Caster put him in the category of a possible $400,000 Springboard Mile candidate at the end of the meet, Dec. 17.

“Mr. Caster thinks he is the best 2-year-old at Remington Park,” said Manrrique. “We work hard every morning. I was confident, but he is just a baby. I have to let him know I'm there if he needs me (during the race). He was getting out a little so I had to remind him.”

Rowdy Rascal, a juvenile gelding by Den's Legacy, out of the Affirmatif mare Dancing Diva, earned $45,000 for the victory and is showing the same kind of bloodlines his dam (mother) had.

“We campaigned the mom and she was a champion sprinter in Oklahoma,” said Moore. “We bred her to Den's Legacy to try to get more distance and he's showing it was a good idea.”

Rowdy Rascal covered the one mile in 1:40.38 over the fast track after sitting mid-pack throughout the first half-mile. He came flying on the outside at the top of the lane and gained a one-length lead quickly that turned into three lengths at the wire. He went off as the 7-5 betting favorite and paid $4.80 to win, $3 to place, and $2.40 to show.

Rowdy Rascal improved his record to six starts, three wins, and one second for a bankroll of $132,859. Showing his adolescent side, he didn't win the first race of his career until his fourth attempt, on Sept. 18 this meet at Remington Park. He has won three in a row, including that maiden victory, increasing his speed and endurance with each race. He ran second to Cuatro Madres in a maiden event here on Aug. 28, but Friday night, Rowdy Rascal beat that horse by three lengths. Cuatro Madres (2-1) got up for second, 4-1/4 lengths in front of third-place finisher Beckett's Luckyday (10-1).

The fractions for the race were :24.10 for the first quarter-mile, :48.97 for the half-mile, 1:14.34 for three-quarters of a mile, and 1:27.17 for seven-eighths of a mile.

The score for Rowdy Rascal gives his connections their first triumph in the Don McNeill Stakes. The race is named in honor of the late Don McNeill. The owner and breeder who was so prominent in Oklahoma-bred racing, represented by many talented horses including top Oklahoma-breds Clever Trevor and Mr. Ross, as well as 2011 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb's Posse. McNeill passed in 2015.

Remington Park racing concludes this week with a Saturday night card of nine races. First post time is 7:07 pm Central.

Half-Sisters, Stablemates Face Off In Friday Night’s Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf

Alternative Slew has won the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf the past two years in a row. This year, however, her half-sister Run Slewpy Run is the 3-1 morning line favorite on Friday night's Oklahoma Classics Night at Remington Park.

Oklahoma Classics Night includes eight stakes races worth more than $1 million for the top Oklahoma-breds in the game. The first race of the evening is at 7:07pm.

Both Run Slewpy Run and Alternative Slew are from the barn of trainer Jesse Oberlander and both have the same mother (dam), Imadancingslew. Alternative Slew is the second favorite at 7-2 odds and probably would be the favorite as the two-time defending champion, but the 5-year-old mare has had only one race since Dec. 12.

“She almost put her eye out in her stall and almost lost the eye,” Oberlander said of Alternative Slew. “It got infected and we had to give her some time off. She's fine now and we were able to save her eye.”

Her half-sister, Run Slewpy Run, has had three races this meet, including a 2-for-2 run on the turf. This 3-year-old filly by Den's Legacy with Imadancingslew by Evansville Slew won an allowance on the grass to open the meet at 7-1/2 furlongs on Sept. 2 and then followed that with her first stakes win at the same distance greensward, the $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial Stakes on Sept. 24. In between those wins, she ran second in the $50,000 Oklahoma Stallion Stakes on the dirt Sept. 10.

Alternative Slew's sire is Alternation.

“These two are amazing,” said Oberlander of his filly and mare. “And their little half-brother is running in the Oklahoma Classics Juvenile, Dancing Devil.”

Alternative Slew won this race last year on Oct. 16 by 1-3/4 lengths as the 3-5 favorite with Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame jockey Luis Quinonez up. He retains the mount this year. Quinonez moved into second place on the all-time winningest jockey list at Remington Park this meet, passing Don Pettinger. She also won the 2019 edition by 4-1/4 lengths as the even-money favorite. Iram Diego rode her to victory that night. Her half-sister, Run Slewpy Run's two wins on the lawn have been at 7-1/2 furlongs while this race is set for 1-1/16th miles. It will be interesting to see who has the advantage down the stretch.

Mike Jones of Bristow, Okla., owns both horses and is also the breeder.

Another mare that can't be overlooked is Country Daisy, the third horse on the morning-line odds at 9-2, at the rail in post-position one. She ran second to Run Slewpy Run in the Bob Barry Memorial, beaten three lengths as the 2-1 favorite. She beat Alternative Slew in an allowance race on the grass Sept. 1 by five lengths at 7-1/2 furlongs, but that was also Alternative Slew's first race back after more than eight months off.

The National Weather Service is calling for a clear but cool evening Friday night with the high in Oklahoma City reaching 64 degrees. There is no rain in the forecast. Temperatures should be dropping into the 50s during the races.

Here's the field from the rail out with horse, jockey, trainer and odds:

  1. Country Daisy, Leandro Goncalves, Ray Ashford, 9-2
  2. Twilight Curfew, David Cabrera, Ronnie Cravens III, 6-1
  3. Courtly, Ezequiel Lara, Lynn Chleborad, 5-1
  4. Leather and Lace, Lindey Wade, Ronnie Cravens III, 20-1
  5. Hawaiian Typhoon, Lane Luzzi, Austin Gustafson, 8-1
  6. Tic Toc Toccet, Jose Medina, Steve Williams, 15-1
  7. Run Slewpy Run, Luis Quinonez, Jesse Oberlander, 3-1
  8. Tiztheboss, Chad Lindsay, Miguel Silva, 12-1
  9. Alternative Slew, Stewart Elliott, Jesse Oberlander, 7-2

The Distaff Turf is the fourth race of the night with an approximate off time of 8:34pm. All times are Central.

The other stakes events comprising the Oklahoma Classics include:

Race 2 – $145,000 Distaff, 3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, 1 mile-70 yards

Race 3 – $130,000 Sprint, 3-year-olds and up, 6 furlongs

**Welder, the all-time winningest horse at Remington Park with 16 wins here, will be making the final start of his career in the Sprint. His connections, Ra-Max Farms (Clayton Rash) of Claremore, Okla., and trainer Teri Luneack have indicated he will, after retirement, train to be the farm's pony horse, returning to the racetrack to accompany Ra-Max's racehorses in the post parade and to the gate.

Race 5 – $100,000 Lassie, 2-year-old fillies, 6 furlongs

Race 6 – $175,000 Classics Cup, 3-year-olds and up, 1-1/16 miles

Race 7 – $100,000 Juvenile, 2-year-old colts and geldings, 6 furlongs

Race 8 – $130,000 Distaff Sprint, 3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, 6 furlongs

Race 9 – $130,000 Turf Classic, 3-year-olds and up, 1-1/16 miles (turf)

Quinonez, Run Slewpy Run Combine For Another Win At Remington Park

Owner Mike Jones of Bristow, Okla., and trainer Jesse Oberlander have figured out the key to Run Slewpy Run winning races and it worked again Friday night in the $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial Stakes.

The key is jockey Luis Quinonez.

“Yeah, I've only ridden her three times and I've won all three,” said Quinonez, with a laugh after the 3-year-old filly powered home gate to wire in this 7-1/2 furlongs race on the turf at 5-2 odds.

Run Slewpy Run gave Jones his second win in the past three years in this race, also taking home the trophy in 2019 with Alternative Slew. Randy Oberlander, Jesse's dad, trained that one to the win and Iram Diego rode her.

Run Slewpy Run is a half-sister to Alternative Slew. They both loved the grass and the reason Oberlander and Jones trusted this one to run big in this spot. Both of those turf stakes-winning fillies had Imadancingslew for a dam (mother). She passed away on June 2, 2019. The most amazing stat concerning these two stakes winners is that they show up as Imadancingslew's first two foals. She only had one other, Dancing Devil, who is now a 2-year-old gelding. He has had one start, finishing sixth in a maiden race at Remington.

This 3-year-old filly by Den's Legacy, out of the dam whose sire was Evansville Slew, earned $42,000 for the victory and now has raced eight times with three wins and two seconds for $110,631 in her bankroll. Run Slewpy Run is two-for-two on the turf, winning an allowance race with Quinonez up on Sept. 2 here going the same distance as Friday night. Quinonez's third win in the irons came on Dec. 3, 2020, with Oklahoma-bred 2-year-old fillies, sprinting 6 furlongs on the dirt.

“She broke alert and felt comfortable,” said Quinonez. “She really kicked it on in the stretch when I asked her for what she had left.”

Jesse Oberlander said she likes the turf and she will continue on that surface in the future.

Run Slewpy Run and Machos Vision vied for the early lead and the former took over on the far turn and the latter faded to last. Quinonez let out a notch at the top of the stretch and the lead grew to 1-1/2 lengths before she drew away to win by three lengths. Country Daisy, the 2-1 wagering favorite, came rolling from mid-pack to get up for second, a neck ahead of She's All Wolfe (3-1). Run Slewpy Run paid $7.40 to win, $3.80 to place, and $2.60 to show. She finished in a time of 1:29.21 over the firm going. The early fractions were :24.05 for the first quarter-mile, :48.11 for the half-mile, and then 1:11.89 for three-quarters of a mile. She is a homebred horse by her owner.

The Bob Barry Memorial is named in honor of legendary sports broadcasters Bob Barry, Sr. and Bob Barry Jr. Between the father and son, they covered over 60 years of sports in Oklahoma, winning numerous sportscaster of the year awards.

Run Slewpy Run won the final race of the evening at Remington Park. She completed the Sooner 6ix mandatory payout wager, races 4-9. Those with tickets holding six consecutive winners were paid $5,206.78 each from a betting pool of $151,448 that was coupled with a carryover pool of $46,974.58. The odds for the winning horses in the combination were 7-2, 4-1, 5-2, 3-1, 2-1, and 5-2.

Racing continues this week with a Saturday-Sunday schedule. It's the only Sunday race day of the meet, serving as Oklahoma Derby Day. Post time is 3 p.m. on Sept. 26, while Saturday night begins at 7:07 p.m. All times are Central.
