Delaware Jockeys’ Health And Welfare Fund Providing Free Physicals, Concussion Baseline Test On May 24

In anticipation of the opening of the 2021 racing season at Delaware Park, The Delaware Jockeys' Health and Welfare Fund is holding a jockey health day on Monday, May 24, in the jockeys' room immediately after morning training closes. Physicals and baseline concussion tests will be provided free of charge. All jockeys are strongly encouraged to attend. The Commission requires a current-year physical for licensing, with consideration of mandating a baseline concussion test. Premier Physical Therapy and Sports Performance (Premier PT) is hosting the event.

Ed Stegemeier, Chairman of The Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Fund, stated: “The Delaware Jockeys Health and Benefit Board is delighted to work with Delaware Park and Premier Physical Therapy in providing services that will add another layer of protective health care for all Delaware jockeys.”

Delaware Park has a licensed athletic trainer during live racing with a treatment room located in the jockeys' room.

Sam Cutrone, the licensed athletic trainer for Premier PT who has been the onsite athletic trainer since the inception Premier PT program, added: “Premier Physical Therapy and Sports Performance is thrilled to be working towards a standard of care for all jockeys and enjoys providing them with the preventative and diagnostic tools that have been long overlooked in the horse racing industry. We hope to improve the quality of life for jockeys both during and beyond their horse racing careers.”

Premier PT, in partnership with Laurel Racecourse track physician Dr. Kelly Ryan of Medstar, has been utilizing HeadCheck, a web-based end-to-end solution to execute concussion protocols, mitigate risk and support recovery. HeadCheck gives participating racetracks the ability to instantly remove and return jockeys to riding by sharing possible injury alerts, baseline tests, physicals, medical clearances, jockey emergency contact information and other pertinent information. HeadCheck uses strict HIPAA compliance with multi-level access where private health information is only provided to medical personnel.

The 77-day Delaware Park meet opens on Wednesday, May 26th and concludes on Saturday, October 16th. Live racing will be conducted Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Thursdays will be added June 24th through September 30th. First-race daily post time is set for 1:15pm.

Delaware: Leading Jockey Carol Cedeno Chasing Record Seventh Title

Three-time defending leading rider Carol Cedeno will be taking a run at history when the 84th live racing season at Delaware Park begins on May 26. The Delaware resident will be going for a record seventh leading jockey title at the Stanton-oval.

Since 2014, the native of Puerto Rico has been the leading jockey every season with the exception of 2017. She is currently tied with another Delaware Park legend Michael McCarthy who won six titles from 1996 through 2000 and 2002.

“I live only about a half-hour from the track and I raise my family in Delaware, so Delaware Park is home to me,” said Carol Cedeno, who is the mother of two children. “I work hard every day to make sure I can be my best for the season at Delaware Park and I take a lot of pride in being the leading rider. Every year it has been hard to be the leading rider and this may be the toughest year because I hear there are a good number of talented jockeys coming, so that just means I will be working a little harder.”

Cedeno has rewritten the Delaware Park history book on a number of other occasions.

She notched seven victories on a single card on July 11, 2018, breaking a record that had stood for more than six decades and was held by six riders. The jockeys who won six races on a single Delaware Park card were Joseph Rocco, Jr., in 2011; Michael McCarthy, who accomplished the feat twice—once in 1997 and again in 1998; Jimmy Edwards, in 1984; Greg McCarron, in 1974; George Cusimano, in 1968; and Eldon Nelson in 1958.

“To be mentioned with those kind of riders makes me extremely happy,” said Cedeno, who notched her 1,000th career victory at Laurel Park on Jan. 2. “Those are some of the best riders in racing, and to be in a group like that is special. I know to keep having success I need to keep working hard. But I love what I do and I love getting up in the morning to go to work at Delaware Park, so I am hoping I can do more.”

Cedeno has nearly 450 career victories at Delaware Park.

Seventh Time In North America The Charm For Delaware In Course Record Performance

Michael Dubb, Nice Guys Stables and Michael Caruso's Delaware earned a 99 Beyer Speed Figure with a visually impressive score in the Danger's Hour Stakes, while Horologist garnered a 90 Beyer for her Top Flight win on a lucrative Saturday card at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Newly minted North American stakes winner Delaware captured the Danger's Hour in a course record time of 1:33.67 over the Big A inner turf.

Trained by Chad Brown and piloted by Manny Franco, the bay 5-year-old son of Frankel displayed a devastating turn of foot with a five-wide move in upper stretch to power past pacesetter Rinaldi for a three-quarter-length score.

“I don't have any plans for his next race, but we were really pleased with the effort, especially with how much ground he made up in the stretch,” said Brown. “He looked fine this morning.”

Delaware was a Group 3 winner in France for trainer Andre Fabre before joining Brown's contingent in North America. He made his U.S. debut in the First Defence on June 7, where he finished eighth beaten five lengths. The Danger's Hour was a first North American victory for Delaware, who made his seventh start in the United States.

Bred by original owner Juddmonte Farms, Delaware was purchased by his current ownership group out of last year's Keeneland November Sale. He is out of the Oasis Dream mare Zatsfine, who is a sibling to Grade/Group 1 winners Proviso and Byword.

The Brown-trained Analyze It, who finished last of seven in the Danger's Hour, was reported to have bled.

The New Jersey-bred Horologist made her 2021 debut a winning one while providing Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado with their combined third stakes victory of the 11-day Big A spring meet.

Horologist is owned by There's A Chance Stable, Medallion Racing, Abbondanza Racing, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Paradise Farms Corporation and David Staudacher.

“She was a little tired this morning, but she looked well,” said Mott assistant Leana Willaford.

Horologist, who was named New Jersey Horse of the Year last month, put together a successful 2020 campaign with graded stakes victories in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth Park and the Grade 2 Beldame Invitational at Belmont Park. She capped off her prosperous season in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland when ninth to Monomoy Girl.
