Longtime Paddock/Television Host Rich Glazier Passes At Age 73

Rich Glazier, the former paddock and television replay show host at Delaware Park, passed away Tuesday at his home in Wilmington, Delaware. He was 73.

The Delaware native started his career at the Stanton-oval as the host of the local replay show on cable in 1987. He also developed and hosted the “Delaware Racing Scene Show” highlighting the best of Delaware Park racing and the sport on the national level. In his more than three decades at Delaware Park, Glazier held numerous positions including paddock handicapper and analyst where he became popular with his insightful and fun interviews with almost every popular personality in Mid-Atlantic racing.

As a lifelong fan of Delaware Park, he took tremendous pride in only missing one Delaware Handicap which was in 1968 while he was serving one of his two tours during his 18 months of service as a veteran in the intelligence division of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

“He was more than I could have ever hoped for when we brought him on board in 1987,” said Executive Director of Racing, John Mooney. “When he first approached me with the idea of working at Delaware Park and hosting a cable show highlighting racing, I was not sure. He was married with two young children and he wanted to give up his job as an accountant to work at a track that at the time was struggling. But he made it work and he did an incredible and professional job. He gained the respect of everyone and made friends throughout the industry. He was as great a representative for Delaware Park as there could be and he will be greatly missed.”

Glazier is survived by his wife of 49 years, Amy; sons David and Michael; daughters-in-law Katie and Julie; grandchildren Sydney, Zachary, Jacob, Samuel, and Nora; brother Brad; sister-in-law Michelle; and niece Jenna.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to St. Jude's Hospital for Children, the Siegel JCC Senior Center, or charity of choice.

Horse-For-Course Dream Marie Upsets Obeah Stakes

Miracles International Trading's Dream Marie posted an upset victory in the $100,000 Obeah Stakes at Delaware Park today. The Obeah is the local prep for the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap to be run on July 10th.

With Joe Bravo aboard, the 4-year-old daughter of Graydar won by a 1 3/4-lengths and returned $19.40 in the field of seven. Miss Marissa, with Daniel Centeno, finished second. It was another a 2-lengths farther back to Market Rumor, with Chris Landeros., in third. The 6-to-5 favorite, Bajan Girl with Paco Lopez, finished fourth. Dream Marie covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:44.40 on a sloppy main track.

The Obeah Stakes was the first career stakes victory for the Kentucky-bred conditioned by Matthew Williams. She raised her career record to five wins from 20 starts with earnings of $297,420.

Last year, Dream Marie teamed up with jockey Joe Bravo for a second-place finish in Delaware Oaks at odds of 9-to-1.

“She really likes this course,” said winning jockey Joe Bravo. “The last time she was on this course she was a very game second a heart-beat from winning. Today, as I was expecting, when she turned for home, she really kicked off nicely.”

Trainer Matthew Williams was never discouraged after her previous race when she ran fifth at Gulfstream Park on May 7 and he has the Delaware Handicap under consideration for her.

“She really likes being here at Delaware,” said winning trainer Matthew Williams. “She ran really well here last year and she was only beaten a half-length. She has been training really well. In her last race, she finished last but that was against boys. In that race she ran the time I was expecting because I was not expecting the winner to run in 1:34, but even in that race I thought she ran the race we were expecting. It did not end the way we wanted, but she was off for three months and she trained really well since then. The Delaware Handicap is definitely a consideration. It is a mile and a quarter, so we have to think about it, but she really likes it here at Delaware, so we got a lot to think about.”

Jockey Xavier Perez Celebrates 1,000th Win Milestone

Jockey Xavier Perez celebrated the 1,000th win of his career on Monday at Delaware Park, capturing the sixth race by a nose aboard the Jerry Robb-trained In The Loop.

“It's a big achievement for me,” Perez told The Racing Biz. “It's been ups and downs – more ups than downs. I had a couple of bad years, but it was just a little bump in the road. I went through it, and I'm here. I'm here.”

The 33-year-old native of Puerto Rico began his riding career at Charles Town, and moved to Maryland in 2011. His career-defining horse came in 2013 when he piloted Dance to Bristol to seven consecutive victories, including the G1 Ballerina at Saratoga.

Perez won just 22 races in both 2016 and 2017, but bounced back to double and then triple that total in the next two years.

His 1,000 victories have come from 8,134 mounts, with earnings approaching $26 million.

Jockey Health Day At Delaware Park Focused On ‘Improving The Standard Of Care’

The Delaware Jockeys' Health and Welfare Fund held a jockey health day on Monday, May 24, in the Delaware Park jockeys' quarters. Premier Physical Therapy and Sports Performance (Premier PT) hosted the event. A team of four doctors and three athletic trainers offered their services for this event; Dr. Kelly Ryan, Dr. Brad Sandela, Dr. Talha Khan, Dr. Chelsea Backer, Athletic Trainers Mandy Minutola, Sam Cutrone and Paige Ezell. Just under 30 jockeys attended the event to undergo physical examinations, baseline concussion testing and onboarding onto the Headcheck Health management system

Premier PT, in partnership with Laurel Racecourse track physician Dr. Kelly Ryan of Medstar, has been utilizing HeadCheck, a web-based end-to-end solution to execute concussion protocols, mitigate risk and support recovery. HeadCheck gives participating racetracks the ability to instantly remove and return jockeys to riding by sharing possible injury alerts, baseline tests, physicals, medical clearances, jockey emergency contact information and other pertinent information. HeadCheck uses strict HIPAA compliance with multi-level access where private health information is only provided to medical personnel.

Mandy Minutola, Director of Athletic training for Premier Physical Therapy, stated: “The first Jockey Health Day at Delaware Park was a successful step towards improving the standard of care for jockeys in our area. The collaboration of our Athletic Trainers with local sports medicine physicians to put the health and safety of the jockey first and foremost was evident in this event and something we hope was abundantly evident to our jockeys & their families. Premier is honored to provide an Athletic Trainer on all race days and be able to improve the quality of life of the jockeys during and beyond their horse racing careers. Our ultimate goal is to spread this desire to improve care standards across the United States for ALL jockeys.”

Delaware Park has a licensed athletic trainer during live racing with a treatment room located in the jockeys' room. Sam Cutrone, the licensed athletic trainer for Premier PT who has been the onsite athletic trainer since the inception Premier PT program, stated: “Premier Physical Therapy and Sports Performance is thrilled to be working towards a standard of care for all jockeys and enjoys providing them with the preventative and diagnostic tools that have been long overlooked in the horse racing industry. We hope to improve the quality of life for jockeys both during and beyond their horse racing careers.”

Ed Stegemeier, Chairman of The Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Fund, stated: “The Delaware Jockeys Health and Benefit Board is delighted to work with Delaware Park and Premier Physical Therapy in providing services that will add another layer of protective health care for all Delaware jockeys.”

The 77-day Delaware Park meet opens on Wednesday, May 26th and concludes on Saturday, October 16th. Live racing will be conducted Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Thursdays will be added June 24th through September 30th. First-race daily post time is set for 1:15pm.
