Delaware Racing Connections Make $20K PDJF Donation

Delaware Park Casino & Racing, the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, the Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Benefit Fund and the Delaware Park Jockeys Association teamed up Saturday to donate $20,000 to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

The check was presented after the tenth race at Delaware Park Saturday. Over the course of the live racing season, each jockey donates a dollar from each mount fee and Delaware Park Casino & Racing, the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and the Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Benefit Fund each match the dollar. The total is then donated to the PDJF at the end of the season.

“Delaware Park has been fortunate to have an exceptional jockey colony for years, not only as riders, but as leaders,” said Ed Stegemeier, the Chairman of the Delaware Jockeys Health and Welfare Fund Board and Secretary of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission. “We could not be happier today to come together for this presentation.  I am particularly honored with the method of having all the groups coming together to make this important contribution possible.”

DTHA, Delaware Park Donate To MAHR, Canter Delaware

Edited Press Release

Delaware Park Casino & Racing and the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (DTHA) have teamed up to donate $20,000 to Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue (MAHR) and Canter Delaware.

A check presentation was held after Saturday's fourth race as part of the special 10-race Owners Day card.

“We are honored to be a partner with Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue and Canter Delaware in this initiative to make sure these incredible athletes have careers after racing,” said Kevin DeLucia, chief financial officer at Delaware Park. “The people behind these organizations do incredible work dedicating themselves to making sure each horse has a purpose and place beyond racing. We could not be happier to support them.”

“The Delaware Park horsemen work well with the aftercare team,” said DTHA Executive Director Bessie Gruwell. “We are fortunate to have such a dedicated team, they have boots on the ground in the stable area every week checking in with trainers to see if they have any horses that are looking for a new career.”

Delaware Joins Growing List Of Track Cancellations Due To Heat

Joining an ever-growing list of tracks to cancel their programs to start the weekend, Delaware Park will follow suit and reschedule their Saturday live racing card due to the excessive heat forecasted for the region, the track said in a release Friday.

Acting upon the recommendation of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission (DTRC) veterinarians, the entire July 29 live racing card will be transferred to Friday, Aug. 4. The national weather service has predicted temperatures in the 90s with a heat index of value approaching the mid-100s. Live racing is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, August 2nd. First race post time is 12:30 p.m. E.T.

Elsewhere out of an abundance of caution, Woodbine Racetrack outside of Toronto cancelled its Thursday and Friday slate. The Mid-Atlantic heat caused Laurel Park to move its Friday card, while Ellis Park in Kentucky will shift its Friday and Saturday programs to Monday and Tuesday of next week. Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio also scratched its Friday racing and Colonial Downs, which announced it was cancelling its Friday card Wednesday, additionally postponed its Saturday card.
