Beat Ray At Del Mar: Will Peter Thomas Fornatale Be ‘In The Money’?

Peter Thomas Fornatale produces the longest continuously running horse racing podcast, the In the Money Players' Podcast, from his studio in Brooklyn, N.Y., but his focus this weekend is on the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on the other coast where he tries to Beat Ray in the seaside track's Beach Boss online contest.

Beach Boss is a free-to-play competition every racing day of the Bing Crosby meeting, giving contestants an opportunity to make mythical $100

win, place or show bets on any horse or horses in the selected race. The winner at the end of the meet will be the person with the highest bankroll and will receive two VIP Tickets to the 2022 Del Mar summer race meeting, including hotel and a travel stipend. A slew of other Del Mar prizes will be paid out to other top finishers.

It's not too late to sign up. Register here.

As part of the Beach Boss contest, each week a guest handicapper will join television racing analyst Michelle Yu and me to handicap the contest race and try to “Beat Ray” with their mythical wagers.

In addition to his growing In the Money Media business (co-founded with Jonathon Kinchen), which now hosts 10 horse racing podcasts, Fornatale is a horseplayer who has written numerous books on betting and other topics.

Check out this week's analysis of Saturday's Beach Boss contest race below.

Sunday’s Insights: Expensive Colt Looks To Maintain Sire’s Momentum

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency
3rd-DMR, $70k, Msw, 2yo, 5fT, post tme: 4:30 p.m. ET
Spendthrift Farm's Gormley (Malibu Moon) has gotten off to a flyer at stud, with 18 first-crop winners to his credit, and B DAWK will look to add to that total Sunday 'where the turf meeets the surf. A half-brother to SP Nicky Scissors, the May 21 foal was a $77,000 short yearling at Keeneland January last year before improving into a $140,000 KEESEP purchase. Joseph Besecker signed the ticket on the chestnut at $425,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale (see below) and West Point Thoroughbreds, among the underbidders, struck a deal to partner on the colt. The hammer price was the second-priciest of his sire's 45 juveniles (52 ring) reported as sold this year. TJCIS PPs

Baffert Has Bob Hope Surrounded

The always well-stocked Bob Baffert barn, fresh off its victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile last week with Corniche (Quality Road), has three more pricey and full-of-potential juvenile colts entered against just two other rivals in Sunday's seven-furlong GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar. Baffert already owns a record 10 Bob Hope trophies and has won four of the last six renewals.

Breaking from the rail is 'TDN Rising Star' Messier (Empire Maker), a 6 1/2-length second-out winner at Santa Anita Oct. 22. He now sheds blinkers off the graduation–a move Baffert has employed in the past with the likes of Bob Hope winner Mastery, Triple Crown winner Justify, champion juvenile Game Winner, etc. Drawn to Messier's right is $400,000 KEENOV weanling Kamui (Quality Road), who was second–demoted to third for interference–behind re-opposing Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah)–at Del Mar Aug. 21. The Baoma Corp. colorbearer aired by six lengths at Los Al Sept. 11. Winning Map (Liam's Map) rounds out the Baffert trio and boasts the field's top Beyer Speed Figure of 85. The $525,000 OBSMAR (:20 3/5) acquisition justified 2-5 odds when cruising clear to a 4 1/4-length debut victory in Arcadia Oct. 3.

The aforementioned Forbidden Kingdom returns to the main track after checking in third as the favorite in Santa Anita's Speakeasy S., a prep for the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Rock N Bye (Stay Thirsty) ventures for the first time out of Cal-bred company, where he annexed the local Graduation S. in August before two more stakes placings.

American Pharoah Filly Goes One Better at Del Mar

5th-Del Mar, $71,500, Msw, 11-12, 2yo, f, 5fT, :56.67, fm, 2 3/4 lengths.
SHOPPINGFORPHAROAH (f, 2, American Pharoah–Smart Shopping {SP}, by Smart Strike) cut out a sharp pace in her six-furlong debut at Santa Anita Oct. 23 and yielded grudgingly to finish second by a length at 16-1. Sent off the 33-10 third favorite–with $22 less on her nose than second choice Granola Girl (Jack Milton)–the $300,000 Keeneland September yearling was once again ridden positively by Ricky Gonzalez at this slightly shorter journey, beating favored Comedic (Practical Joke) to the punch while not overextending herself pace-wise. The chalk tried to make a race of it in upper stretch, but Shoppingforpharoah had a nice kick and covered her final eighth of a mile in a smart :11.52 to win clear. Granola Girl was a distant third. The final time was 0.70 seconds quicker than the first division of the race that kicked off the Friday program. Shoppingforpharoah is out of a stakes-placed half-sister to Power Broker (Pulpit), whose major victory came in this track's GI FrontRunner S. in 2012; as well as SW Fierce Boots (Tiznow). Third dam Shopping (Private Account) produced GISW Miss Shop (Deputy Minister), the dam of MGSW Tin Type Gal (Tapit), GSW/MGISP Trappe Shot (Tapit) and SW & GSP Bought In Dixie (Dxieland Band). Smart Shopping is the dam of the yearling filly Yard Sale (Uncle Mo), a $435,000 purchase by Claiborne Farm at this year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale and a weanling colt by Arrogate. She was most recently mated to Justify. Sales history: $300,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $54,200. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
