Public Sector Seeks Fourth Straight Win in Hollywood Derby

Klaravich Stables' Public Sector (GB) (Kingman {GB}) looks to register his fourth straight win Saturday in the GI Hollywood Derby at Del Mar. The bay kicked off his hot streak with a win in Saratoga's GII Hall of Fame S. Aug. 6 and took the GIII Saranac S. there next out Sept. 4. He enters this off a win in the nine-panel GII Hill Prince S. at Belmont Oct. 23. His conditioner, Chad Brown, also saddles Sifting Sands (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was seventh in the Hill Prince, but captured Saratoga's Better Talk Now S. Aug. 29.

LNJ Foxwoods' Subconscious (Tapit) also enters on a three-race win streak. Breaking his maiden at fourth asking at this venue Aug. 21, the dark bay captured a Santa Anita optional claimer Oct. 2 and returned 29 days latet to win the GII Twilight Derby.

Ken McPeek ships in with Camp Hope (Summer Front), who romped in a Keeneland allowance Oct. 8. The bay was a decisive winner of the Lexington oval's Bryant Station S. last out Oct. 30, earning a 96 Beyer Speed Figure.

Godolphin homebred Santin (Distorted Humor) puts his undefeated record on the line as he takes a big step up in class in this event. A debut winner at Indiana Grand Sept. 29, the bay rallied to victory in a Keeneland allowance Oct. 23.

D’Amato Holds Strong Hand in Durante

Trainer Phil D'Amato saddles a pair of live contenders in Saturday's GIII Jimmy Durante S. at Del Mar. Making one start in Europe before joining D'Amato's barn, Helens Well (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) broke her maiden at Del Mar Aug. 15 and finished second in both the Sept. 5 Juvenile Fillies Turf S. in SoCal and the Oct. 3 Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita. She enters off an eighth-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf S. Nov. 5. D'Amato also saddles Virulente (Fr) (Al Wukair {Ire}), who was privately purchased and sent to America after a first-out score in France Aug. 22.

Peter Miller sends out three in this event, led by Tezzaray (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}). Third in a pair of British starts in August, the chestnut was privately acquired by these connections and brought to America. She rallied to victory in her California debut at this oval Nov. 4. Her stablemate Travel Smart (Gormley) checked in fifth to next-out Grade I winner Grace Adler (Curlin) in her career bow going five furlongs on dirt here July 31, but broke through next out when dangled for a $50,000 tag in a one-mile turf event Oct. 30. Rounding out the Miller trio is Liam's Dove (Liam's Map), who defeated Helens Well in the aforementioned Juvenile Fillies Turf S. That was her first win and third start and she followed that with a 10th in the Surfer Girl.

Graham Motion invades Del Mar for the second time this month with Sparkle Blue (Hard Spun). The dark bay graduated at first asking in an off-the-turf event at Colonial Aug. 17 and was fourth next out in Laurel's grassy Selima S. Oct. 2. She won a course-and-distance optional claimer last out Nov. 3.

Cary Grant Result Scripted Perfectly For Filmmaker/Trainer Librado Barocio

There's a reason it took Librado Barocio a couple of decades with his training license before scoring his first graded stakes victory in the Nov. 21 Cary Grant Stakes at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

“I'm a filmmaker,” Barochio explained in the winner's circle afterward.  “I make a film, I'm away for a year or two and then I come back. Last time I took three years off and came back in June. I've been working with Kevin Hart and Jamie Foxx on some things.”

Barocio, a 1987 graduate of the UCLA film school, got his racetrack education working with/for the late trainer Julio Canani and Canani's assistant Miguel Delgado. He's trained thoroughbreds, when not fully engaged in the business of his Culver City-based New Latin Cinema Productions, off and on since 1999.

He currently has seven horses in his stable. Principe Carlo ($39.00) nosed out favored Positivity in a photo to provide Barocio with his first stakes victory anywhere. “I prayed so hard,” Barocio said of the moments when the result hung in the balance. “But I felt good about it.”

Principe Carlo had been claimed for $20,000 in October of 2020, went unraced for more than a year, and came back with a creditable runner-up at Santa Anita before the Cary Grant.

The owning Mi Familia Racing Stable, which translates from Spanish to “My Family,” is indeed the family of Barocio, his wife two daughters and a son. Barocio has had runners at Del Mar over the years, he said, but not last summer

“I didn't come to Del Mar this (summer) because I was finishing up a film I was doing in Los Angeles,” Barocio said. “The guys (racing secretaries) Chris Merz at Santa Anita and David Jerkens here have been good to me. They gave me a chance and that's all I needed. David said I could come here any time.”

Neige Blanche Kicks Off Del Mar Turf Festival With Front-Running Red Carpet Score

The French filly Neige Blanche made every pole a winner in her 11-furlong journey Thursday in the $100,000 Red Carpet Handicap at Del Mar and held off the late-charging 3-10 favorite Luck at the wire for a head victory in the Grade 3 headliner at the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif.

The 4-year-old chestnut by the Irish stallion Anodin ran the distance in 2:15.45 under Juan Hernandez and returned $24.80 to her backers in the Thanksgiving Day crowd.

Neige Blanche ('white snow' in French) is trained by Frenchman Leonard Powell. She's owned by the following group: Sol Kumin's Madaket Stables, Laura De Seroux, Marsha Naify and Mathilde Powell.

Luck, who races for LNJ Foxwoods, finished a half length ahead of Katsumi Yoshida's Nicest in third.

The payoffs were Neigh Blanche $24.80, $5.00 and $3.00; Luck $2.20 and $2.10, and Nicest $3.00. Fractions were :25.00,  :50.60, 1:16.35, 1:40.25, 2:03.38 and 2:15.45

“I thought I'd be running second behind someone,” said Hernandez. “She usually relaxes better if she's got a horse in front of her. But today nobody wanted the front and she seemed to be fine out there so I just let her keep on going. When we were in the stretch she sensed that other horse (3-10 favorite Luck) coming on the outside and she picked it up. She didn't want to get beat.”

Neige Blanche earned a first prize of $60,000 for her efforts, pushing her winnings to $315,280. She now has six wins in 15 outings.

“We brought her here (from France) a year ago and she has been a really consistent, good horse,” said Powell. “We tried some new tactics today, going to the lead, and it worked. I could see the first time past the stands the pace wasn't that fast and I felt good. I had a moment of concern when she was headed in the stretch, but she dug in very gamely and got her head in front at the wire. I'm very proud of her.”

The Red Carpet is the first of seven graded stakes run on turf at Del Mar for its final four days of the 2021 Bing Crosby Season.

There was an early 11 a.m. first post Thursday because of the holiday, but post will move to the regular 12:30 start for the remaining three days.

The track's elusive Pick 6 Single Ticket Jackpot Wager once again slipped through the bettors hands and its carryover reached $460,113. With three days left in the meet, there is the possibility that the massive pot could go forward all the way to closing day on Sunday when there would be a mandatory payout of the entire pool.
