Dr. Schivel Gives Violence Another Grade I Winner in Runhappy DMR Futurity

Dr. Schivel (Violence), making his first start for new owners Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal, glided to a 1 3/4-length victory in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity on closing day at the oceanside oval Monday. Made the 7-5 favorite to build on a smart-looking Aug. 8 maiden victory for breeders William Branch and Arnold Hill, Dr. Schivel sat a stalking trip three wide, went after favored Spielberg (Union Rags) entering the stretch and proved a little too tough for that rival, edging away down the stretch to give Hill ‘n’ Dale stallions a sweep of the holiday Grade I juvenile races on both coasts and giving his sire Violence his third Grade I winner of the year.

“I loved the way he was moving [down the backstretch]; he looked comfortable,” said winning trainer Luis Mendez. “Around the turn, it looked like he had a lot of horse, so I felt really good. And he got it done.”

A $1-million Keeneland September yearling, Spielberg showed the way early from GII Best Pal S. upsetter Weston (Hit It a Bomb), with Flavien Prat and Dr. Schivel keeping an eye on those two from the outside. But he had the answers when push came to shove at the quarter pole and, although Spielberg boxed on gamely down on the inside, Dr. Schivel got the job done by the better part of two lengths.

“He broke well, then he got a little aggressive on me,” Prat said. “I tried to give him a little breather on the turn, then when I asked him, he was a runner. He’s a nice colt.”

Dr. Schivel was third behind Weston while sprinting

4 ½ furlongs in his debut at Santa Anita June 21 and runner-up behind subsequent GII Best Pal S. third-place finisher Sonic Brees (Maclean’s Music) going 5 ½ furlongs at Los Alamitos July 4. But he put it all together for his third start, cruising to a

5 3/4-length victory over Spielberg in that colt’s debut effort going six furlongs Aug. 8. He was purchased privately after that victory and the Futurity was his final start for Mendez.

“I’m very proud of myself and the team for what we’ve done getting him to win this race,” Mendez, who was winning his first Grade I, said. “I thank the owners for giving me this horse and I’ve got to go back home and start breaking babies for them. I don’t have any other feeling than that.”

Jed Cohen’s Red Baron’s Barn and the Rancho Temescal of Cohen’s son Tim will now send Dr. Schivel to their trainer Mark Glatt.

Dr. Schivel’s victory gave jockey Flavien Prat his 50th win of the meet, putting him one ahead of Umberto Rispoli to earn the Del Mar riding title. The win was his 15th stakes victory of the meet, a record at the oval.

“Well, if that’s how I win the riding title, then that’s great,” Prat said heading into the meet’s final race Monday. “However it turns out, it was good competition. He’s a real competitor and an excellent rider. It was great to go against him.”

Pedigree Notes:

Violence, who won the 2012 GI CashCall Futurity and

GII Nashua S., now has nine graded stakes winners and 23 black-type winners. In 2020, the Hill ‘n’ Dale stallion has been represented by GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. winner Volatile and by GI Woody Stephens S. winner No Parole.

Dr. Schivel is the first black-type winner for his dam, Lil Nugget, who has a yearling colt by Midshipman and was bred back to Anthony’s Cross this year. The 18-year-old mare is a half-sister to Grade I winner Ultra Bend (Richly Blended).

Kent Desormeaux Suspended For Disorderly Conduct After Using Racial Slur In July Incident At Del Mar

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux has been suspended 15 days by California Horse Racing Board stewards for a July 28 incident on the grounds of the Del Mar racetrack and fairgrounds in which Desormeaux is said to have used a racial slur against an African-American television cameraman that led to a fight between the two men, according to Daily Racing Form.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club ejected Desormeaux from the property shortly after the incident.

The stewards' ruling, as reported by the Form, cited Desormeaux for disorderly conduct and requires that he be evaluated by the Winners Foundation, which offers assistance to individuals in California racing dealing with substance abuse issues. In the past, Desormeaux has admitted to being an alcoholic.

A verbal dispute in the RV parking area of the track property between Desormeaux, 50, and 44-year-old Guy Stuttley became physical after Desormeaux used a racial slur, according to the report. Stuttley was fined $200 for fighting and disorderly conducted in a separate ruling, according to the Form.

His agent, J.R. Pegram, said Desormeaux does not intend to appeal the suspension. Pegram told the Form the Louisiana native plans to return to Southern California to resume riding at the end of the suspension, which is to run through Sept. 22.

‘I Tend To Be A Sandbagger’: Miller Exceeds Low Expectations With Del Mar Summer Meet Title

If there was a trophy for the summer training title at Del Mar, Peter Miller's name could have been etched upon it well before the seaside track's meet drew to a close on Monday.  In fact, hyper engravers could have done so a week or two ago.

Miller, a resident of nearby Encinitas, entered the closing day program with 27 wins from 110 starters, an eight-win advantage over Phil D'Amato. Bob Baffert has saddled 14 winners and Doug O'Neill 13.

It's the fourth summer title at Del Mar, which matches the number of fall Bing Crosby Meeting championships he has accomplished since that session was inaugurated in 2014.

“I'm thrilled and feel blessed to have such a great team to work with and this is a reflection of them all as well,” Miller said Monday morning. “From the hot walkers to the assistant trainers, they all give a 100 percent effort every day. And I have owners that allow me to run their horses where I think they should be and where they have a chance to win.”

When asked before the meeting to assess his title chances, Miller was not wildly enthusiastic. “I've got half as many horses as (Richard) Baltas, (Bob) Baffert or Doug (O'Neill) and for me to win everything has to go close to perfect,” Miller said on the eve of the July 10 opener.

In retrospect, Miller said the projection may have been conservative.

“I tend to be a sandbagger,” Miller said with a laugh. “I set my expectations a little low and hope to exceed them. It's really a numbers game and if you can win a good enough percentage things (like titles) happen for you.”

The 25 percent win rate, from the second-highest number of starters at the meeting going into the last day, was sufficient to win the title by a comfortable margin.

“In my mind, 20 percent is a good win percentage,” Miller said. “Anything over that exceeds my expectations. Our horses ran well throughout the meeting. We didn't really have any bad slumps and that makes a big difference.

“I'd just like to thank the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for putting on a pretty darn good show under the circumstances.”

Princess Noor Rules in Del Mar Debutante

Already with a GI Kentucky Derby victory in the bag, Bob Baffert got another superstar performance from one of his charges this weekend, as ‘TDN Rising Star’ Princess Noor (Not This Time) ran away to an explosive victory in the GI Del Mar Debutante Sunday at the seaside oval.

Topping the delayed OBS April sale when hammering to Gary Young for $1.35 million following a dazzling :20 1/5 quarter-mile breeze, the dark bay did not disappoint when unveiled locally Aug. 22, going wire to wire essentially on her own power the entire race. Back on relatively short rest here, she was pounded down to odds-on from an 8-5 morning-line quote.

Breaking inwardly, bumping into second choice and GII Sorrento S. heroine My Girl Red (Texas Red) and squeezing that one back to last, Princess Noor settled in a three-wide third as barnmate Illumination (Medaglia d’Oro) dictated terms through a :23.01 quarter. My Girl Red, who never got involved, was pulled up at that point. The favorite moved in tandem with Forest Caraway (Bodemeister) to overhaul the frontrunner past a :45.49 half, but was going easier of the two and left the other two behind at the top of the stretch.

Drifting in a bit once set down, she straightened quickly, asserted herself fully past the furlong grounds and was under wraps for much of the remainder for an extremely auspicious romp. Forest Caraway held for second. The stewards posted an inquiry regarding the winner’s leftward break, but no action was taken.

“We knew going in she was a special filly,” said Baffert. “She showed so much brilliance at the sale, that’s why she cost so much, and we got what we expected to see today. She broke a little off kilter and was behind horses, but Victor didn’t really push her, especially at the end. We’re happy to get the win. We’ll run her back at Santa Anita and then go from there.”

“She’s a little green. Only her second time [to race],” added winning rider Victor Espinoza. “Coming away from there she went in a bit and I tried to get her off as quickly as I could. You try to control the babies as best as you can, especially at the break. My filly was OK from there. I really don’t know how good she is, because I haven’t let her run yet. It’s nice to be back at Del Mar and riding good horses.”

Pedigree Notes:

The first stakes winner for red-hot freshman sire Not This Time, Princess Noor completed a sweep for first-crop stallions in Sunday’s Grade I juvenile races after Vequist (Nyquist) romped in the GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga. She is the second foal to race for Sheza Smoke Show, an upset victress of the GIII Senorita S. on turf for Peter Eurton in 2014. Both her second dam and third dam are stakes winners. A $185,000 purchase at Keeneland November in 2017, Sheza Smoke Show has a yearling colt by Protonico and foaled a Tapwrit filly Feb. 19 before returning to the former sire.
