Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Calm Before The Storm

Graded stakes action is light stateside in the weekend leading up to the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland, but on Sunday in Japan, seven-time G1 winner Almond Eye will start in the G1 Tenno Sho.

A pair of listed stakes are featured on opening weekend at Del Mar, one Saturday and one Sunday. Also this weekend, a pair of stakes for 2-year-olds at Woodbine will begin the roads toward the 2021 Woodbine Oaks and Queen's Plate.

Racing from Belmont Park is televised on “America's Day at the Races” on FS2. “America's Day at the Races” will also broadcast races from the Churchill Downs' fall meet.

Saturday, Oct. 31

4:57 p.m.-$100,000 Grade 3 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park

Trained by Daniel Velazquez, the 6-year-old Arch Cat will be making his 38th career start in the seven-furlong test for 3-year-olds and up on Big Sandy. The hard-knocking Arch gelding, who sports a record of 13-3-12 with purse earnings of $363,485, was claimed for $16,000 in June 2019 at Parx and has since won 6-of-14 starts for the new connections.

5:15 p.m.-$250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine

Dreaming of Drew, a two-year-old daughter of Speightster, chases her first added-money title in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes, one of two ($100,000 Overskate) features on Saturday's 11-race card at Woodbine. Eight starters are slated to go postward in the 75th renewal of the Princess Elizabeth, a 1 1/16-mile main track race for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies. Trained by Barbara Minshall, who has 380 career victories, Dreaming of Drew arrives at Saturday's engagement off a fourth-place finish in the Natalma Stakes (G1T) on Sept. 20 at Woodbine.

6:30 p.m.-$75,000 Kathryn Crosby Stakes at Del Mar

The Bing Crosby Season kicks off with a salute to the classy wife of the late singer and track co-founder – Kathryn Crosby – with a stakes race named in her honor and limited to fillies and mare aged 3 and up. Pick a filly or mare in this lineup and you can make a ready case why she could or should win. Morning line maker Jon White gave just the slightest of edges for favoritism to Donnie Crevier's veteran mare Cordiality as he hung her at a lukewarm 7-2. He put Branham, Baltas or McClanahan's Colonial Creed next at 4-1, then put a 5-1 projection on four different horses. It figures to be a tight one in the wagering and just as tight out on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

1:40 a.m.-about $3,104,299 G1 Tenno Sho Autumn At Tokyo Racecourse

The “Emperor's Cup,” run over 2,000 meters of turf, will feature 12 horses including seven-time Grade 1 winner Almond Eye. A total of seven Grade 1 winners will be participating, including double Tenno Sho (Spring) winner Fierement and Chrono Genesis, who crushed the competition in the Grade 1 Takarazuka Kinen at the end of June. Ages range from 4 to 6, with three females and one gelding competing against the boys.

4:48 p.m.-$250,000 Coronation Futurity at Woodbine

Eight hopefuls, including Barb Minshall trainees British Royalty and Threefiftyseven, and Gail Cox charge Tio Magico, square off in Sunday's $250,000 Coronation Futurity Stakes, at Woodbine. The 1 1/8-mile Tapeta event for Canadian-foaled 2-year-olds is a significant race on the road to the 162nd running of the Queen's Plate, first jewel of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.

Minshall, in the midst of a strong campaign, packs a powerful punch in the form of British Royalty and Threefiftyseven. British Royalty, an Ontario-bred son of English Channel, impressed in his career bow on October 11 at Woodbine. Under Jerome Lermyte, who once again gets the call in the Coronation Futurity, the Bruce Lunsford-owned gelding was pinched back at the start of the 1 mile and 70 yard main track race. Last of nine early, British Royalty steadily gained on his eight rivals, and was travelling well around the final turn. Sixth at the stretch call, he continued to gobble up ground and went on to a 1 ¾-length score in a time of 1:43.74.

7:00 p.m.-$75,000 Let It Ride Stakes at Del Mar

Alfred Pais homebred Margot's Boy was a tabbed a narrow 3-1 favorite in a competitive field of 10 on oddsmaker Jon White's morning line for Sunday's featured $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes at one mile on turf for 3-year-olds. A son of Clubhouse Ride out of the English-bred mare Margot Machance trained by Craig Lewis, Margot's Boy has three wins from nine career starts and earnings of $172,020. He shortens up from 1 1/8-mile assignments in the Grade II, $200,000 Del Mar Derby on September 6 (2nd) and Grade II, $200,000 Twilight Derby (7th) on October 18 at Santa Anita.

Del Mar Adjusts Some Starting Gate, Turf Rail Positions After Surveying Turf Course

With the objective of improving the accuracy of tracking and timing data, officials at Del Mar have re-surveyed the track’s turf course with a GPS system that will be in use beginning with the start of the Bing Crosby Meet Oct. 31. In August, the track acknowledged a rash of timing inconsistencies and reported that turf races would be hand timed over the last two weeks of the summer meeting.

In conjunction with Equibase and its timing partner Gmax, Del Mar has re-surveyed its seven-furlong turf oval for the different race distances run over it. The survey included both distances of the races and run-up distances from where the starting gate is positioned to the point where the timing mechanism is triggered.

Accordingly, track officials have modified several starting gate and turf rail positions. The results of the survey also helped Del Mar to correct some historic variations in how distances (measured from the finish line back) were calculated. As a result, adjustments have been made to the position of the poles on the turf course.

“The integrity of timing data is critical and we know we have to get this right,” said Del Mar’s President and Chief Operating Officer Josh Rubinstein. “We believe the adjustments made as a result of the survey, while relatively minor, combined with Gmax’s GPS technology, will provide for more accurate and consistent timing.”

Del Mar conducts grass racing at six different distances-five furlongs, one mile, 1 1/16 miles, 1 1/8 miles, 1 3/8 miles and 1 1/2 miles. The turf course has five rail adjustments for its races– zero, 12 feet, 18 feet, 24 feet and 30 feet. Approximately 40% of the track’s races are run on its turf course. Rail adjustments and run-ups are necessary for both safety and fairness, helping to preserve the consistency of the turf course. Track officials noted that in some cases, due to the gate positions, the run-up to where the timing begins may be slightly longer than it was in the past, which could result in slightly faster times.

The Bing Crosby Meet runs through Nov. 29.

Del Mar Modifies Several Gate, Turf Rail Positions For More Accurate Timing, Tracking

Del Mar has re-surveyed its turf course to enhance timing and tracking accuracy with a state-of-the-art GPS system that will be in use for the start of the Bing Crosby Season this Saturday.

Following its recent summer meet — in conjunction with its racing data partner Equibase and its partner GMAX, a global positioning satellite information platform — Del Mar re-surveyed its seven-eighths mile grass oval for the different race distances run on it. The survey included both the race distances and the run-up distances from where the starting gate is positioned for each race to the point where the timing mechanism is triggered.

As a result of the survey, Del Mar has modified several starting gate and turf rail positions. Del Mar's 15-day season will run through to Sunday, November 29. First post daily will be at 12:30 p.m. for all days with the exception of Thanksgiving Thursday (November 26) when there will be an early 11 a.m. post.

Del Mar’s Bing Crosby Season Kicks Off With Evenly Matched Group In Kathryn Crosby Stakes

For Saturday's opening of Del Mar's seventh fall race meeting, its racing office carded a nifty feature that drew eight fillies and mares who'll run a mile on the turf. A handicapper might need a large crowbar to separate them all.

The Bing Crosby Season kicks off with a salute to the classy wife of the late singer and track co-founder – Kathryn Crosby – with a stakes race named in her honor and limited to fillies and mare aged 3 and up. It will be offered as the seventh event on a nine-race program that is off and running at 12:30 p.m. Pacific, the starting time for virtually all programs every day for the fall session.

Pick a filly or mare in this lineup and you can make a ready case why she could or should win. Hronis Racing's Ellie Arroway (Victor Espinoza, 8-1); Charles or Gordon's Never Be Enough (Tiago Periera, 5-1); Gem or Kagele's Proud Emma (Flavien Prat, 8-1); Deborah McAnally Trust's She's Our Charm (Juan Hernandez, 5-1); Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Muchly (Umberto Rispoli, 5-1); Cordiality (Drayden Van Dyke); Baoma Corp's Qahira (Abel Cedillo, 5-1), and Colonial Creed (Mario Gutierrez).

Cordiality, a 7-year-old who can still pick them up and put them down, comes into the race off a wire-to-wire tally at Santa Anita at the same distance on Oct. 3, besting several of the rivals she'll face Saturday. The Tim Yakteen-trained daughter of Papa Clem has 12 wins in 33 lifetime starts and sports a trio of firsts and a pair of seconds in seven Del Mar turf starts. She's the top earner in the lineup with $620,815 in purses.

Colonial Creed races out of the barn of trainer Richard Baltas. The 4-year-old chestnut by Jimmy Creed is a steady sort who rarely misses picking up a check and has three wins and three seconds in her 10 turf starts. She was third to Cordiality, less than two lengths behind, in the October 3 race at Santa Anita.

Muchly missed to Cordiality be less than a length in the aforementioned heat. The 4-year-old British-bred by the Zafonic stallion Iffraaj is conditioned by Simon Callaghan and has finished on the board in all but one of her stateside races since coming over from Europe this year.

She's Our Charm has won three of seven lifetime starts and comes into the race off a wire-to-wire score at Santa Anita on October 16. Hall of Famer Ron McAnally is the 4-year-old filly's trainer and – with his wife Deborah – breeder. She's by the high-line Kentucky stallion Candy Ride – who McAnally trained to win the 2003 Pacific Classic at Del Mar – and out of their Empire Maker mare Charm the Maker. She's captured three of seven outs in her brief career and has the kind of speed that makes her the likely pacesetter in Saturday's feature.
