Dr. Schivel Punches Breeders’ Cup Ticket in Bing Crosby

Sent off the 12-5 second favorite while facing his elders in Saturday's GI Bing Crosby S., a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint over course and distance in November, Dr. Schivel (Violence) jumped fairly from an outside gate and was outsprinted through the early stages, covering favored C Z Rocket (City Zip) from the second flight. Beginning to warm up to the task three-eighths out, Dr. Schivel was flushed four wide outside of Eight Rings (Empire Maker) into the lane, was put to a left-handed drive at the furlong grounds and outfinished Eight Rings for the victory. C Z Rocket raced far back into the final 2 1/2 furlongs and found his best stride too late. The race lost some of its luster when defending champion Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy)–a stablemate of Dr. Schivel's–was scratched, having grabbed a quarter training Friday.

“This is a real racehorse,” said winning trainer Mark Glatt. “He beat the olders today, and hopefully in November he'll be able to do it again.”

A maiden winner at third asking for former trainer Luis Mendez, Dr. Schivel added the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity before being given the balance of the year off. Programmed for a late-season sophomore campaign, he returned to action with a tough neck victory in a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance June 18.

With his Futurity victory late last summer, Dr. Schivel became the third of three Grade I winners in 2020 for his sire, joining 'TDN Rising Star' No Parole and Volatile. One of 31 stakes winners (11 grade) for Violence, he is the only black-type winner from a daughter of former Jeff Bonde trainee Mining for Money (Mining), a half-brother to MGSW Intrusion (Top Command), who was a maiden winner and stakes placed in two trips to the post. A half-sister to GI Clement L. Hirsch S. winner Ultra Blend (Richly Blended), Lil Nugget is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Barsini Red (Midshipman), did not produce a foal in 2020 or this year and was most recently bred to Anthony's Cross.

As Time Goes By Seeks Third Straight in Clement Hirsch

Tabor, Magnier and Smith's As Time Goes By (American Pharoah) looks for her third straight win–and an automatic berth in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff–in the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. at Del Mar Sunday. The Bob Baffert trainee, second in the Mar. 13 GI Beholder Mile, romped home by 9 1/4 lengths in the Apr. 24 GII Santa Margarita S. She was all out to hold off This Tea (Curlin) in the May 22 GII Santa Maria S., but has been freshened since then and is training strongly for her return.

Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) invades from the East to try out the Del Mar surface which will host the Breeders' Cup in November. Winner of last year's GI Kentucky Oaks, the bay filly returned to win the Mar. 13 GI Azeri S. by a head over divisional leader Letruska (Super Saver) and added the Apr. 30 GI La Troienne S. at Churchill Downs. She pressed Letruska on the lead before settling for third in the June 5 GI Ogden Phipps S. last time out.

Venetian Harbor (Munnings) returns to the main track after a front-running victory in the 6 1/2-furlong GII Monrovia S. at Santa Anita June 5 in her only 2021 outing to date. First or second in five straight graded events last year–including runner-up efforts in the GI Ashland S. and GI Test S. and a win in the GII Raven Run S.–the bay filly was sidelined following an eighth-place effort in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint in November.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Do You Believe In Luck?

Saturday's Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar is more than a Grade 1 race or a Win and You're In Breeders' Cup Challenge qualifier for the Sprint division when the world championships come to the seaside racetrack on Nov. 5-6.

The Crosby, named for the crooner who once owned Del Mar racetrack, is this week's Beat Ray Beach Boss event, where a guest handicapper takes his or her turn attempting to out-handicap me with a mythical $100 bankroll. So far, guests Scotty McKeever and Billy Koch have done very well, leaving me 0-for-2 and wondering if I'll ever find a winner.

British broadcaster Nick Luck, currently covering the Tokyo Olympic equestrian events for the BBC but well-known to American viewers of racing telecasts, joins host Michelle Yu and me this week to handicap the Crosby. While I'm relying on morning line favorite C Z Rocket to bail me out, Nick has done his due diligence on some of the other runners and come up with a pair of longshots he is backing.

None Above The Law Upsets The Chosen Vron In Real Good Deal

Downstream Racing's gray stretch runner None Above the Law found a perfect spot just behind the leaders early, then pounced at the quarter pole and won in the clear in Friday's featured Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, Calif.

The Golden State Series offering was worth $175,500 in total and $99,750 to “Law's” connections. The homebred gelding – whose winning margin turned out to be 5 1/4 lengths – was winning the fifth race of his career and raised his bankroll to $304,060.

Downstream Racing is the nom du course of J. Kirk Robison of El Paso, Texas.

The 3-year-old test was conducted over seven furlongs and the winner covered the distance in 1:22.90 after fractions of :22.98, :46.20 and 1:10.65

Leading rider Flavien Prat was in the boot on “Law” for his third winner of the afternoon.

“We were in a good spot and he was comfortable,” said Prat. “The draw helped us. When I asked him (to go), he was a willing horse. He's a nice horse.”

Leading trainer Peter Miller tightened the cinch on the son of Karakontie for his third victory on the day.

“The No. 1 horse (The Chosen Vron) towered over the field, but he didn't fire today,” said Miller. “And it's hard to win from behind on this track. Our horse tries every time and Flavien (Prat) gave him a great ride, so we couldn't be happier.”

After eight days of racing at the Del Mar stand, Prat now has 16 wins and is well in front in the jocks' standings. Miller has racked up eight victories to easily lead the trainers' parade.

Finishing second in the Real Good Deal was the odds-on favorite The Chosen Vron, who is owned by the partnership of Fetkin, Sondereker or Thornburg, et al, while running third was Brown, Klein or Lebherz's Letsgetlucky.

The winner paid $22.00, $4.00 and $2.60 across the board. The Chosen Vron returned $2.10 and $2.10, while Letsgetlucky paid off at $3.20 for the show.

The track's Pick Six Single Ticket Jackpot wager was not hit for the sixth day in a row and its carryover pot ran up to $441,366.

Post time for Saturday's 11-race card is 2 p.m.

The stakes win was the fifth of the meet for rider Prat and his fourth in the Real Good Deal Stakes. He now has 65 stakes wins at Del Mar, 12th most of all riders all time.

The stakes win was the second of the meet for trainer Miller and his third in the Real Good Deal Stakes. He now has 40 stakes wins at Del Mar.
