Santa Anita To Continue Successful ‘Ship & Win’ Program For Upcoming Autumn Meet

Encouraged by the tremendous success it has helped spark at the current Del Mar summer race meeting, officials at Santa Anita have announced the popular “Ship & Win” program, which began this past May at Santa Anita, will continue to be in effect through the Arcadia, Calif., track's upcoming 2021 autumn meet, which opens on Friday, Oct. 1.

“This program has proven to be a primary driver in our efforts to bring horses to California from all over the nation,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita director of racing and racing secretary. “We started to see some horses coming here in May and June and Del Mar has done a tremendous job of recruiting, which we are confident is going to be of significant benefit to the entire circuit here.  Along with Del Mar, the Thoroughbred Owners of California have been very supportive in the implementation of Ship & Win and it's great to have all of us working together for the benefit of racing in California.”

The Ship & Win program, which provides a $3,000 bonus and a 35 percent increase in purse earnings for any horse that has not run in California for one year, augments significant purse increases which have been instituted in 2021 at both Santa Anita and Del Mar.

Additionally, any new out-of-state horses coming to Santa Anita which meet requirements or which have made their first start in the Del Mar Ship & Win program, remain eligible for the same benefits in their first start at Santa Anita.

“We are greatly encouraged by recent trends here in California,” said Merz.  “There's no question that horsemen around the country are realizing that our purses and incentives are making racing here a much more compelling enterprise.  Field size is up at Del Mar and that of course drives pari-mutuel handle.

“With everything that's in place now, our sport is poised to grow in very significant ways and that's great news for our horseplayers, owners and horsemen, as we're providing better and better gambling opportunities while attracting quality horses.  We're anxious for everyone to return here in September and we're looking forward to a big meet starting Oct. 1.”

Smash Ticket Leads 11 Juvenile Fillies Postward in Del Mar’s Sorrento Stakes

Eleven promising juvenile fillies will face the starter Friday at Del Mar and run six furlongs in the 53rd edition of the Sorrento Stakes. The Grade 2, $200,000 headliner will be the featured attraction on an eight-race card that has a traditional Four O'Clock Friday start at the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif.

Nine of the 11 2-year-olds have already won a race and one of them – King, Kirby or Kirby's Smash Ticket – did so in impressive fashion at Del Mar on July 17 in a straight maiden affair, drawing out to tally by five lengths in good time under Umberto Rispoli for New Mexico-based conditioner Todd Fincher. That dash, along with a second-place finish she turned in earlier in June at Lone Star Park in Texas, was enough for morning line maker Jon White to hang her the 9-5 favorite in the Sorrento.

Others in the field who have drawn White's eye are Little Red Feather Racing's Elm Drive, who trains out of the barn of Phil D'Amato and won her initial start at Los Alamitos on June 26 by eight lengths under Juan Hernandez. The rider returns Friday and they've drawn the role of second-favorite at 5-2. Listed at 4-1 is Baoma Corp's Eda, who missed by a whisker at Santa Anita on June 19, but was made the winner for a bumping incident with the filly Ko Olina. Bob Baffert trains Eda and once again will have Abel Cedillo in the boot.

Here's the full field for the Sorrento from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:

Marc Ricker's She's So Shiny (Ricky Gonzalez, 8-1); Smash Ticket; Eda; Donworthy or Ennis' Shesgotattitude (Trevor McCarthy, 8-1); Alydom Racing, Barragan or Lerner's Loveherheart (Drayden Van Dyke, 15-1); Reddam Racing's It's Simple (Mario Gutierrez, 6-1); Agave Racing Stables or Schera's Sax (Joe Bravo, 10-1); Binder and Associates, Anderson, et al's First Promise (apprentice Jessica Pyfer, 20-1); Elm Drive; Tricar Stables' Roses for Suzzett (apprentice Emily Ellingwood, 20-1), and Lovingier, Beckerle or Carrillo's At the Spa (Tyler Baze, 5-1).

The Sorrento is the stepping stone for young fillies with an eye toward the track's premier race for juvenile misses – the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Debutante, run at seven furlongs on Sunday, Sept. 5.

Trainer Baffert holds the record for most Sorrento winners with seven. He has also won nine Debutantes.

Craig Siedler Sweeps To Victory In Del Mar Summer Handicapping Challenge

Craig Siedler, from Henderson, NV, catapulted into the lead in the second race Saturday and never looked back in the two-day 18th annual Del Mar Summer Challenge. Siedler won handily over 127 classy entries with a final bankroll of an unfathomable $100,000 from the $3,000 starting bankroll. Prize winnings totaled $50,000 including $35,000 cash, a $10,000 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) entry at Del Mar and an August 21 $5,000 Pacific Classic Betting Challenge Del Mar entry. Siedler had 78-1 winner Miss Carousel over 27-1 After Midnight an amazing 50 times for more than $51,000 in race winnings. The $1 exacta payoff of $1,025 just missed an all-time Del Mar record. His incredible day ended with $82,617 and he kept firing Sunday pushing his total all the way to the insurmountable six figure finale.

The top five finishers receive BCBC entries in the November 5 and 6 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar.

Shedaresthedevil Distaff-Bound With Convincing Hirsch Triumph

Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) sat off a quick early pace, pounced at the five-sixteenths pole and edged clear in the lane to capture the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. Sunday at Del Mar, punching her ticket to the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff in the “Win and You're In” qualifier with her third Grade I victory.

Bought into by Qatar Racing out of a debut victory for Norm Casse in June of 2019 and transferred to Simon Callaghan, the bay went winless in three subsequent starts as a juvenile, but still hammered for $280,000 at Keeneland November that fall with Sheikh Fahad's outfit keeping an interest. Returning for Brad Cox the following season, she captured the GIII Honeybee S. and GIII Indiana Oaks before famously upsetting future champions Gamine (Into Mischief) and Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks last September. A beaten favorite when third in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. to conclude her sophomore campaign, she returned to the races with tallies in the GIII Azeri S. and GI La Troienne S. before running third in the GI Ogden Phipps S. most recently June 5 at Belmont.

Made the narrow favorite against four rivals in this first California try since her days in the Callaghan barn, Shedaresthedevil was away well from her outside stall and a bit keen early, but soon settled under Florent Geroux to allow Venetian Harbor (Munnings) to skip clear through a quick :23.30 quarter. Longshot Paige Anne (Take Charge Indy) did a bit of her dirty work as she moved up inside to pressure the pacesetter through a :47.11 half. That rival soon dropped away, however, leaving the mantle to the favorite and she obliged, drawing alongside Venetian Harbor as three-quarters went up in 1:11.77. Taking over within a handful of strides after that, she briefly had to spar with the frontrunner, but took charge while shifting in at the eighth pole and didn't face an anxious moment from there, hitting the wire 2 1/2 lengths to the good. Venetian Harbor held for the place. Paige Anne completed the trifecta, while second choice As Time Goes By (American Pharoah) finished a non-factor fourth.

“I'm very pleased,” said Geroux. “The idea was to get her to break alertly, then get a good spot. That's exactly what happened. She ran her race today and she's very good when she does. I'd have to say she's up there with the best mares I've ever ridden. This is her third Grade I win, and the fact that she showed she can run well on the track where the Breeders' Cup will be held, that's a good thing, too.”

Pedigree Notes:
One of six stakes winners and two graded winners for repatriated Daredevil–the other being fellow multiple Grade I winner Swiss Skydiver–Shedaresthedevil is easily the most accomplished of four foals to race out of Starship Warpspeed. Her unraced second dam is half to Crafty C. T. (Crafty Prospector), a Grade II winner who also placed in six Grade I events. Herself only a $39,000 2-year-old purchase, all six of Starship Warpspeed's foals to sell at auction went for six figures, including an unraced 3-year-old Outwork filly named Jemison who sold for $150,000 at Fasig-Tipton July and a juvenile Speightster filly named Blackheartedgypsy, who hammered to Shedaresthedevil's co-owner Flurry Racing Stables for $350,000 at Keeneland September in the wake of her Oaks success. She also has a yearling Exaggerator filly and dropped a colt by Uncle Mo Mar. 26 before being bred back to that superstar sire.
