Registration Now Open For 2021 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge

Registration for Thoroughbred racing's biggest live-money handicapping tournament ― the 2021 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) ― is now open.

The Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge, now in its 13th year, annually draws the top horseplayers from around North America, and will crown the winner with the highest accumulated bankroll at the end of the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships. This year's Breeders' Cup will be held at Del Mar racetrack in picturesque Del Mar, Calif., on Nov. 5-6.

The 2021 BCBC total cash prize pool is expected to be $1 million based upon a minimum of 400 players registered. Players may participate in the BCBC from Del Mar (host site) and official satellite locations at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., and Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. Players can also participate online at TVG.com (the official wagering partner of Breeders' Cup), Xpressbet.com, and NYRA Bets.

For the 2021 BCBC, a $2,500 buy-in and $7,500 betting bankroll ($10,000 total) are required of each player. All buy-in monies are applied to the prize pool. Players can bet into the Win, Place, Show, Exacta, Trifecta, and Daily Double pools with their $7,500 bankroll over the two days and keep all monies earned from their betting.

In 2020, 430 individuals competed in the BCBC. Marshall Gramm of Memphis, Tenn., won the tournament hitting a cold exacta of Authentic and Improbable in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), which earned him 170,250 points. Combined with his first-place prize of $322,500, Gramm had total winnings of $492,750.

Midnight Worker Shifts To Turf For ‘Win And You’re In’ Futurity

Repole Stable's Midnight Worker will take his talents to the turf for the first time in Sunday's Grade 3, $150,000 Futurity, a six-furlong inner turf sprint for juveniles at Belmont Park.

The Futurity offers a “Win and You're In” berth to the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on November 5 at Del Mar.

Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, Midnight Worker posted a game debut win sprinting six furlongs on the main track on July 24 at Saratoga Race Course. He followed with a prominent third in the one-mile Sapling on September 5 on the Monmouth Park main track.

By the Pletcher-trained Outwork and out of the stakes-placed Speightstown mare Spice Lady [who was also conditioned by Pletcher], Midnight Worker was scratched from Sunday's Grade 2 Pilgrim here, a 1 1/16-mile turf test won by stablemate Annapolis.

Midnight Worker has breezed twice over the Belmont inner turf, including a sharp half-mile in 48.44 seconds on September 26.

“I worked him a couple of times on the grass and he seemed to breeze pretty well over it, so hopefully he can step up,” Pletcher said. “It seems like the Outworks are pretty versatile. He's had some winners on both dirt and turf which gives you some options.”

Jump Sucker Stable's Slipstream, by More Than Ready, graduated at third asking by 5 1/2-lengths sprinting seven furlongs on the Belmont turf on September 18.

Trained by Christophe Clement, Slipstream, out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Cake Baby, was purchased for $170,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Slipstream will exit post 4 under Joel Rosario.

Trainer Wesley Ward entered a pair of fillies in Castleton Lyons' Chi Town Lady and Arnmore Thoroughbreds' Poppy Flower, who are both cross-entered here in Saturday's Grade 3 Matron where they drew posts 8 and 1, respectively, in a field of 12 juvenile fillies.

Chi Town Lady, by Verrazano, graduated at first asking sprinting 4 1/2-furlongs in April on the main track at Keeneland and followed last out with an impressive 1 3/4-length score over Poppy Flower in the 5 1/2-furlong Bolton Landing, overcoming a stumbled start and yielding turf on August 18 at the Spa.

Poppy Flower, a Lea chestnut, graduated at third asking sprinting six furlongs on the Belmont turf in June ahead of her pacesetting effort in the Bolton Landing. She enters from a prominent third in the 6 1/2-furlong Ainsworth on September 12 at Kentucky Downs.

Ward won the 2019 Futurity with Four Wheel Drive, who went on to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

Hall of Famer John Velazquez is named on Chi Town Lady from post 5, while Jose Ortiz has the call aboard Poppy Flower from post 8.

Rounding out the field are Rick Violette-stakes winner Run Curtis Run [post 1, Eric Cancel]; Live Oak Plantation homebred maiden winner Biz Biz Buzz [post 3, Javier Castellano]; and a pair for trainer Jim Chapman in Ready to March [post 7, Charles Roberts] and Kavod [post 6, Paco Lopez].

The Futurity is slated as Race 5 on Sunday's 9-race which also features the Grade 2, $250,000 Beldame at nine furlongs for fillies and mares; and the Grade 3, $150,000 Knickerbocker, a nine-furlong turf test for 3-year-olds and up.

Breeders’ Cup Winner Order Of Australia Returns Stateside For Keeneland Turf Mile

Defending FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) Presented by PDJF winner Order of Australia (IRE) returns to Keeneland Saturday as the headliner in a field of 13 in the 36th running of the $750,000 Keeneland Turf Mile (G1).

In addition to the Keeneland Turf Mile, which is a “Win and You're In” race for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile Presented by PDJF at Del Mar on Nov. 6, Saturday's 11-race program will offer two other Grade 1 tests: the 108th running of the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity for 2-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on the main track and the 24th running of the $400,000 First Lady Presented by UK HealthCare for fillies and mares going a mile on the turf.

The Keeneland Turf Mile will go as the 10th race Saturday with a 5:46 p.m. ET post time. First post is 1 p.m.

Owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Anne Marie O'Brien, Order of Australia posted a 73-1 upset when he prevailed by a neck in the Breeders' Cup Mile here last November. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Order of Australia arrived at Keeneland Tuesday afternoon after spending two days in quarantine at Churchill Downs.

Order of Australia has won one of five starts in 2021 and enters the Keeneland Turf Mile off a runner-up finish in the Prix du Moulin (G1) at Longchamp in September. John Velazquez has the mount Saturday and will exit post 10.

One of the horses chasing Order of Australia in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile was Ivar (BRZ), who will seek to become only the third horse to win the Turf Mile in consecutive years.

Trained by Paulo Lobo, Ivar finished fourth, 2 lengths behind Order of Australia, in the Breeders' Cup. In Ivar's lone 2021 start, he was sixth, beaten 2 lengths in the Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill in May.

Joe Talamo has the mount Saturday from post position six.

The field for the Keeneland Turf Mile, with riders from the inside, is: Front Run the Fed (Francisco Arrieta), Argentello (IRE) (Brian Hernandez Jr.), In Love (BRZ) (Alex Achard), Space Traveller (GB) (Danny Tudhope), Tell Your Daddy (Julien Leparoux), Ivar (BRZ) (Talamo), Pixelate (Tyler Gaffalione), Brown Storm (Hector Berrios), Monarchs Glen (GB) (Ricardo Santana Jr.), Order of Australia (IRE) (Velazquez), Diamond Oops (Florent Geroux), Field Pass (Flavien Prat), Somelikeithotbrown (Jose Ortiz). All starters will carry 126 pounds.

Tarnawa A ‘Definite Possibility’ To Defend Her Title In Breeders’ Cup Turf

Last year's Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tarnawa may return stateside to defend her title at Del Mar in November, reports the Racing Post. The 5-year-old Shamardal mare ran most recently in Sunday's Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and was defeated just three-quarters of a length by 72-1 longshot Torquator Tasso over heavy ground at Longchamp.

In her other two starts this season, Tarnawa won the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes and ran second to St Mark's Basilica in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.

Trainer Dermot Weld said there was a “definite possibility” Tarnawa will make her next start in the Breeders' Cup Turf, racing against males again.

“She tried hard and we've got no excuses but you saw the stamina of Tarnawa, not the speed, which was nullified on the testing ground,” Weld explained. “If we hadn't had so much rain on Saturday night, we'd have won.”
