Breeders’ Cup Turf: Flavien Prat Selects Domestic Spending Over United

Leading West Coast jockey Flavien Prat has chosen to ride Domestic Spending instead of his long-time mount United in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar, reports the Daily Racing Form.

Prat has ridden United for 17 of his 22 starts, including eight victories and dual appearances in the 1 1/2-mile Turf for trainer Richard Mandella. Most recently, the 6-year-old son of Giant's Causeway won the G2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita on Oct. 2.

Prat has also been aboard the Chad Brown-trained Domestic Spending for his last three starts, which include a win in the G1 Old Forester Turf Classic at Churchill, a win in the G1 Manhattan at Belmont, and a second-place effort in the G1 Mr. D Stakes (formerly the Arlington Million) at Arlington Park.

“The horse of Chad Brown's must be pretty good for Prat to take off,” Mandella told DRF.

Tarnawa Pleases Weld Ahead of Breeders’ Cup

Last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), who was a close second in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when last seen, is in good order ahead of the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Trainer Dermot Weld is pleased with High Highness The Aga Khan's homebred's preparation and she leaves for California on Oct. 29 in a bid to defend her Turf title.

“The Arc took a fair bit out of her, but she's an amazing animal with a wonderful constitution and huge determination,” Weld said. “After a week when she was tired, she has bounced right back, and I was pleased with a bit of work she did the other morning.

“She flies out with the other Irish and English contingent, about 35 horses altogether, next Friday. The track is going to be my biggest concern. It's where the surf meets the turf, and it's very firm.”

A winner of the G3 Ballyroan S. when making her 2021 debut on Aug. 5, the chestnut ran second in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown on Sept. 11 prior to completing the exacta in the ParisLongchamp showpiece on Oct. 3.

Chad Brown’s Breeders’ Cup Brigade Works at Belmont

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown worked multiple Breeders' Cup contenders on a crisp and overcast Saturday morning at Belmont Park.

Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' and GI Champagne S. winner Jack Christopher (Munnings) breezed five furlongs in 1:00.85 (4/18) in preparation for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Nov. 5 at Del Mar. The move was completed in company with GI Frizette S. runner-up Gerrymander (Into Mischief), who is possible for the one-mile $150,000 Tempted S. Nov. 5 at Belmont.

“He's trained brilliant since day one and he continues to do so,” Brown said. “I'm very impressed with that horse every time he works.”

Royal Flag (Candy Ride {Arg}), a last out winner of Belmont's GII Beldame S., went a half-mile in :48.66 (11/74) in preparation of the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff Nov. 6.

Brown also sent a number of Breeders' Cup hopefuls to breeze over the firm inner turf Saturday, including grassy GISWs Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}). Both horses are bound for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf and worked five furlongs in tandem in 1:01.55 (3/9).

“They worked very well,” Brown said. “They were a good team together. I was very pleased with the work.”

Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) registered his first move since taking the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic  Oct. 9 at Belmont, recording a solo half-mile in :50 (9/18). He is also on target for the Breeders' Cup Turf.

Two-time GIII Fasig-Tipton Waya S. winner My Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) breezed five furlongs in 1:02.02 (6/9) in company with GIII Athenia S. heroine Pocket Square (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in preparation for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

“For right now, she's doing everything I'm asking her to do,” Brown said of Pocket Square. “I really liked her work today and her gallop out. I would like to try her going that far. I know it's a huge step up in class, but I'm very, very pleased with how she's doing and I think she can get a piece of it.”

The GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf-bound Consumer Spending (More Than Ready), a last out winner of Laurel's Selima S., worked five furlongs in 1:02.25 (8/9) in company with graded-stakes placed maiden Kinchen (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

“She worked solid and galloped out strongly,” Brown said. “She's coming into the race that right way. It's a big step up but she's an improving horse.”

Trainer Christophe Clement, meanwhile, also breezed a pair of Breeders' Cup hopefuls over the Belmont grass– MGISW Gufo (Declaration of War) (Turf) (four furlongs in :48.66); and GIII Futurity S. winner Slipstream (More Than Ready) (GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf) (four furlongs in :51.14).

Medina Spirit Breezes Through The Fog

Zedan Racing Stables' Medina Spirit (Protonico) drilled six furlongs in 1:13 (2/7) on a foggy Friday morning at Santa Anita as he prepares for his next start in the $6-million GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar Nov. 6. The Florida-bred was put through his paces by former jockey Juan Ochoa.

“I got :59 and four,” said bloodstock agent Gary Young, who recommended the purchase of Medina Spirit to owner Amr Zedan. “You can see fine now [8:15 a.m.], but you couldn't see him when he worked. It was dark but I think the times are close enough,” Young said. “He looked good doing it.”

Medina Spirit, who will try to add to trainer Bob Baffert's four previous wins in the Classic, earned his way into the championship weekend centerpiece with a dominating five-length victory in the GI Awesome Again S. at Santa Anita Oct. 2.
