Irad Ortiz Jr. Wins Fourth Consecutive Shoemaker Award For Outstanding Jockey At BC

Irad Ortiz Jr. won his fourth consecutive Bill Shoemaker Award, given to the most outstanding jockey at the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

The Shoemaker Award goes to the jockey who won the most races in the 14 World Championship races this weekend with the tiebreaker being a 10-3-1 point system for second- through fourth-place finishes.

Ortiz and William Buick both won three races, but Ortiz also had a runner-up finish and three fourth-place finishes while Buick finished fifth with his only other mount.

Ortiz won the first Championship race of the weekend on Twilight Gleaming (IRE) in the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and then added Saturday victories in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint with Golden Pal and the G1 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with Life Is Good.

Buick also had one victory Friday on Modern Games (IRE) in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and then two on Saturday with Space Blues (IRE) in the G1 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF and Yibir (GB) in the G1 Longines Turf.

Two other riders posted multiple wins: Joel Rosario and Jose Ortiz.

Rosario took the richest race of the weekend, the $6 million G1 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic with Knicks Go and Friday's G1 NetJets Juvenile Fillies with Echo Zulu.

Ortiz's victories came on Pizza Bianca in Friday's G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and Aloha West in the G1 Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint.

The Shoemaker Award is named in honor of one of the greatest jockeys in the history of Thoroughbred racing. Bill Shoemaker, who captured the Kentucky Derby four times, won 8,833 races in a career that spanned more than 40 years. In 1987, at age 56, Shoemaker won the Breeders' Cup Classic aboard Ferdinand at Hollywood Park.

Going Global Gets The Win In Goldikova At Del Mar

On the undercard for Saturday's Breeders' Cup World Championships, Going Global (IRE) angled out from the rail on the far turn to find racing room and surge to victory in the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

Sitting midpack through six furlongs, Going Global and Flaiven Prat bided their time behind leader Princess Grace through early fractions of :23.22 for the first quarter and :47.55 for the half-mile. Around the final turn, Prat moved his filly out to the outside of Zofelle (IRE) and Princess Grace, and sprinted to the lead midstretch to take the Goldikova by 2 1/2 lengths. Zofelle was second and favorite Princess Grace hung on for third. Abscond, Bodhicitta, Constantia, Ippodamia's Girl, and Glesga Gal rounded out the order of finish.

Going Global paid $7.60, $4.20, and $2.60. Zofelle paid $5.40 and $3.00. Princess Grade paid $2.20.

“We were running well all the way. She was comfortable. When I took her out she showed me a good turn of foot. When she finished she still had something in the tank,” Prat said after the Goldikova.

“I loved the position all the way around. And when Flavien (Prat) swung her outside in the stretch she really hit a great stride. This is a big step up, going against older fillies and mares, and she handled it beautifully,” trainer Phil D'Amato told the Del Mar Press Office after the race.

Bred in Ireland by N. Hartery, Going Global is by Mehmas (IRE) out of the Invasor (ARG) mare Wrood. The 3-year-old filly is owned by CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gervetz, Michael Nentwig, and Ray Pagano. Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, Going Global was purchased by Pioneer Racing for $16,987 at the 2019 Goffs Sportsman's Yearling Sale. In 2021, the filly also has victories in the G1 Del Mark Oaks, the G2 Honeymoon, and the G3 Providencia for a record of six wins in seven starts and career earnings of $648.792.

‘Miscommunication’: Modern Games Mistakenly Re-Inserted Into Pari-Mutuel Pool For Nearly Seven Minutes After Scratch

The California Horse Racing Board, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, and Breeders' Cup released a joint statement Saturday morning regarding the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf run on Friday at Del Mar. The statement indicates that, contrary to the information relayed by CHRB's executive director Scott Chaney on Friday night, Modern Games was inadvertently re-inserted into the wagering pools for nearly seven minutes prior to the start of the Juvenile Turf.

“The CHRB, Del Mar, and Breeders' Cup officials reviewed the circumstances of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last night and again this morning.

“The CHRB determined that, as discussed in the aftermath of the race, #1 Modern Games was scratched by the stewards on the recommendation of one of the track veterinarians, Dr. Chuck Jenkins, at the starting gate at 17:35:35 PT.

“After additional examination and assessment of Modern Games by the attending veterinary team, track veterinarian Dr. Dana Stead concluded that the horse had not been injured and communicated to the stewards that the horse was cleared to run.

“Due to a miscommunication between the stewards and the Del Mar mutuels department, Modern Games was reinserted into the pari-mutuel wagering pools at 17:37:01 PT.

“At 17:43:49 PT, after it was made clear to the mutuels department that Modern Games was competing for purse money only, the horse was again removed from the wagering pools.

“The race went off at 17:47:34 PT.

“Per CHRB rules, all wagers on #1 Modern Games in the win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and super high five pools are subject to refund. Daily double and Pick 3 wagers to Modern Games received a consolation payment. Per CHRB rules, in all other multi-leg wagers ending on the 10th race, bettors with tickets including #1 Modern Games and #2 Albahr received the post-time favorite, #3 Dakota Gold, unless they designated an alternate for the race.

“As a result of the review, the CHRB, Del Mar and Breeders' Cup are modifying their injury management communications protocols, so that Dr. Stead will make the final determination with respect to recommended scratches at the starting gate and has sole authority to communicate those recommendations to the stewards.”

Report: Express Train Out of Breeders’ Cup Classic

Express Train, winner of the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in July, has been scratched from Saturday's G1 Breeders' Cup Classic, according to a report from Jay Privman of Daily Racing Form.

Trainer John Shirreffs noted that the 4-year-old son of Union Rags had kicked his hock during schooling for the Classic at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Saturday, the injured area had “minor swelling,” which led to the decision to scratch.

Owned by C R K Stable LLC, Express Train has two wins in seven starts in 2021, with his other victory coming in the Grade 2 San Pasqual at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. He was third behind Medina Spirit and Stilleto Boy, both also in the field for the Classic, in the Grade 3 Awesome Again in early October.

With Express Train's scratch, the field for the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic is down to eight, with Knicks Go the morning line favorite for the 1 1/4-mile race.
