Rachel Alexandra’s Full Sister Gladys Wins Maiden Race At 11-1

Dede McGehee's Gladys, a 2-year-old full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, graduated Sunday at Gulfstream Park West in Miami Gardens, Fla., with an 11-1 upset victory in a mile maiden special weight event carded as Race 5.

The Medaglia d'Oro–Lotta Kim filly roared from off the pace to score a three-length victory in her second career start and first race around two turns. Gladys encountered trouble leaving the starting gate and was never a factor in her Sept. 18 debut at six furlongs.

Gladys, who is trained by Kelsey Danner, ran a mile over a sloppy track in 1:38.80 under jockey Angel Arroyo.

Gladys, who was bred by Mc Gehee's Heaven Trees Farm, is Lotta Kim's eighth foal of racing age. Of course, Rachel Alexandra, who captured the 2009 Preakness (G1), Haskell (G1) and Woodward (G1) on her way to being crowned Thoroughbred racing's champion of 2009, is by far the most accomplished offspring of Lotta Kim.

Full Sister To Rachel Alexandra To Debut Friday At Gulfstream Park

Gladys, a full sister to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, is scheduled to make her debut Friday at Gulfstream Park.

The 2-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro is slated to break from the outside post position in a field of 10 2-year-old fillies assembled for a $65,000 six-furlong maiden special weight race carded as Race 6.

Gladys was named by owner/breeder Dede McGehee, a graduate of the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, in memory of her late maternal grandmother, Gladys Atkinson Houser.

Gladys is the eighth foal out of Lotta Kim, a daughter of Roar whose first foal was Rachel Alexandra, who was named 2009 Horse of the Year after winning five Grade 1 races in a row, including the Preakness, Haskell and Woodward against males and the Kentucky Oaks.

The Kentucky-bred Gladys, who is trained by Kelsey Danner, has been prepared for her debut with a series of 10 breezes at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream Park's satellite training facility in Palm Beach County.

Angel Arroyo has the mount.

Rachel Alexandra’s Half-Brother Wooderson to Stand in Arkansas

Wooderson (Awesome Again–Lotta Kim, by Roar), a half-brother to Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d’Oro), will enter stud at Burdette Thoroughbred Farm in Arkansas in 2021. The deal was brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock.

Bred by Dede McGehee’s Heaven Trees Farm, Wooderson was a $400,000 purchase out of the 2016 Keeneland September Sale, the co-highest priced yearling for his sire in 2016. Trained by Todd Pletcher for Let’s Go Stable, the bay was a three-time winner from 10 starts, including a runner-up effort to future MGISW and Horse of the Year candidate Tom’s d’Etat (Smart Strike) in the 2019 Alydar S. at Saratoga.

A stud fee will be announced at a later date.
