New Approach’s Telecaster Dominates the Grand Prix de Deauville

Patience has long been a particular virtue of Hughie Morrison and Sunday’s G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville was testament to his ability to play the waiting game as Castle Down Racing’s Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) fully came of age. Sent straight to the front by Christophe Soumillon, the 13-10 favourite whose previous foray to France had resulted in a four-length success in ParisLongchamp’s G3 La Coupe June 25 was always content untroubled at the head of affairs on this deep surface. Setting down for his plunge up the straight, the bay was on his own at the end of this 12 1/2-furlong feature as he powered to a 6 1/2-length verdict over last year’s runner-up Soft Light (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}), who edged out last year’s winner Ziyad (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) by 3/4 of a length.

“There were doubts beforehand as to whether he would stay this distance or not, as he had run a moderate race over it in the Derby, and also about the ground but going down to the start he gave me a lot of confidence,” Soumillon commented. “He was very relaxed, so I decided to go on and he handled that very well–it was no effort for him. Turning for home, I had them covered and he quickened very nicely. Hughie Morrison is very good at handling older horses, which boosted my confidence.”

First coming to prominence when beating Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on good-to-firm in York’s G2 Dante S. last May, Telecaster was last of the 13 to run in the Derby and beat only one rival on his only subsequent 3-year-old outing in Sandown’s G1 Eclipse S. Returning with an encouraging third behind the subsequent G1 Prince of Wales’s S. hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the June 7 G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Haydock, he stayed at that 10-furlong trip to gain a perfect confidence-booster in the La Coupe before finishing fourth in the July 25 G2 York S.

Morrison was not ruling out a tilt at the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and said, “He was very raw mentally and physically last year and anything after the Dante was always going to a big step. He needed putting away for next year and thanks to the patience of Mark Weinfeld and his sister Helena we were able to do that. He’s always been a very exciting horse, but we were concerned that the ground might be too deep for him. Christophe says he can go on any ground, but he’s more comfortable with a bit of cut. The Arc has exceptionals horses in it this year and he would have to improve to feature–I’m not saying he can’t or won’t, but it’s exciting to think he can be considered in the same bracket as them.”

Telecaster is out of the stable’s talented but free-going Shirocco Star (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), who was runner-up in both the G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks, as well as the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. when it held group 2 status and was also third in the G1 Pretty Polly S. Her 2017 foal is Godolphin’s classy 3-year-old Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who recently took the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. having finished runner-up in the G3 Autumn S. and third in the G3 Solario S. last term. The fourth dam Hyabella (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), one of four black-type winners out of the G2 Prix de l’Opera heroine Bella Colora (GB) (Bellypha {Ire}), produced the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner Poet (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) who relished testing ground. Bella Colora is kin to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine and excellent producer Colorspin (GB) (High Top {Ire}) and the G1 Champion S. hero Cezanne (GB) (Ajdal) from the immediate dam line of the great matriarch Reprocolor (GB) (Jimmy Reppin {GB}). Also connected to the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up and G3 Tetrarch S.-winning sire France (GB) (Desert Prince {Ire}), the dam has a filly foal by Frankel (GB) to come.

Wootton Bassett’s Audarya In Romanet Upset

There was a surprise in store in Sunday’s G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet as the James Fanshawe-trained Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) took a significant jump in class to provide her trainer with a third renewal of this 10-furlong Deauville feature since 2014. Coming off a Newcastle handicap win over this trip Aug. 2, the 48-1 shot tracked the pace travelling easily and when committed by Ioritz Mendizabal grabbed the advantage before the furlong pole. Challenged by Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) all the way to the line, the bay who sports the silks of Alison Swinburn held her at bay to score by a neck, with four lengths back to Romanciere (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) in third. “I thought I was riding for a place, but this is a nice bonus,” Mendizabal admitted. “The trainer asked me to get a good position, but more importantly to get her to relax. She wasn’t supposed to like the ground, but she was very comfortable and travelled very well on it. I’m not sure how she won like that and it’s a nice story that Francois Doumen bred her, as I know him very well.”

Having saddled Ribbons (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) to win this six years ago and Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) to follow up two years later, it is safe to say that the Newmarket-based handler has previous form where this race is concerned but it took a leap of the imagination to suggest that Audarya could add to his tally. No great shakes at three, she took four starts to break her maiden and when she did it came at lowly Redcar in June before winning a mile Goodwood handicap and finishing runner-up in the Listed Prix Coronation at Saint-Cloud in two of her remaining outings last term. Returning to finish an encouraging eighth behind this race’s 7-10 favourite Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in Kempton’s Listed Snowdrop Fillies’ S. over a mile June 3, she backtracked when sixth in the Listed Pipalong S. also at that trip at Pontefract July 7 before enjoying a class drop to regain confidence on Newcastle’s Tapeta.

With that performance confirming her stamina, Audarya was placed prominently as Bolleville (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) cut out the fractions with Romanciere acting as her lead. With the latter left in front upon straightening for home, she had the ideal target and quickly took her measure dragging Ambition with her approaching the furlong marker. Nazeef was paddling at this point and the first two had the race between them as they stayed on strongly to draw away from the remainder.

Audarya’s dam Green Bananas (Fr) (Green Tune) was a modest performer over middle distances for the Francois Doumen stable and did race at this meeting, finishing runner-up in a 12 1/2-furlong handicap in 2013. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix Minerve and G3 Prix d’Aumale-placed Anabaa Republic (Fr) (Anabaa). Things get more interesting under the fourth dam Jimka (Fr) (Jim French), whose son Jim and Tonic (Fr) (Double Bed {Fr}) proved one of the Doumens’ finest flat performers when taking the G1 Hong Kong Cup, G2 Dubai Duty Free and G2 Hong Kong International Bowl as well as a clutch of group 3 contests in his native France. Jim and Tonic’s full-sister Jimkana (Fr) was responsible for Mauralakana (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}), who captured the GI Beverly D. S., GII New York S. and GII Sheepshead Bay H., and also the dual listed scorer and G3 Prix de la Grotte runner-up Petit Calva (Fr) (Desert King {Ire}).

Arqana Select Sale Moved to September 8 to 10

Arqana has announced that its Select Sale, which had been rescheduled from August to September 24 to 26, will now be brought forward by a little over a fortnight to the new date of September 8 to 10.

The change is a result of the recent imposition of a new 14-day quarantine requirement on travellers to the UK from France, which would not allow participants at the major European yearling sales to attend the three major sales at Arqana, Goffs and Tattersalls.

A statement released by the French sale company on Wednesday read, “Immediately after the announcement by the British government that any person entering the United Kingdom from France would be subject to 14 days of self-isolation, Arqana undertook extensive consultation of vendors represented in the Select Sale catalogue as well as buyers potentially affected by the new constraint. The schedule of premium yearling sales is exceptionally dense this year as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic, and the initial date of 24-26 September would not have allowed buyers to take part in all three major European sales while abiding by the quarantine rule.”

The new dates for the Deauville auction allow sales travellers sufficient time to quarantine ahead of the Goffs Orby Sale on September 29 and 30 and Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which begins its two-week run on October 6. The Arqana Sale now clashes with the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale, which is being held in Newmarket this year on September 8. Quarantine restrictions remain in place in Ireland for 14 days of isolation for visitors from most overseas countries.

In a joint statement, Arqana’s CEO Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “The catalogue for the Select Sale is of outstanding quality and we are committed to providing these exceptional young horses with the best possible marketplace. This requires holding the sale at a time that maximises the chances for French and international buyers to be on attendance in Deauville. We wish to pay tribute to the reactivity and adaptability of all our vendors, who have immediately thrown their support behind this unusual change. Arqana will charter private flights from several locations in order to make the trip to Deauville as quick and secure as possible. We are also working day in day out to make remote participation easy. Online bidding will be available via Arqanaonline.com, while all yearlings are currently being filmed on the farms. Videos will be visible on our website, allowing buyers wherever they are to get a foretaste of the extraordinary collection of colts and fillies on offer.”

Deauville Beckons Dandalla

Group winner Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})’s next target will be either the G1 Prix Morny on Aug. 23 or the G2 Prix du Calvados the day prior, both at Deauville in France. Unbeaten in three starts, including the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot on June 19 and the July 10 G2 Dutchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket, the Nick Bradley Racing silksbearer is trained by Karl Burke.

“She’s in the two races, but if she goes anywhere it will be the Morny,” said Burke. “We just put her in the other one in case it looked a very weak race, or we weren’t 100% happy going to the Morny. So it’s one or the other–she can’t do both–but we’re very happy with her.

“Her form couldn’t look any stronger–with Nick’s other filly Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) winning since, and I believe she’ll run in the Group 2. Even the third from Newmarket [Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}] has won a group race since.”
