Frankel’s Raclette Earns Rising Star Tag in Deauville Debut

Sent postward as the well-backed 21-10 favourite for Sunday's Prix Hipodromo de Chile (Prix des Marettes) at Deauville, Juddmonte's hitherto unraced Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) returned to the winner's circle with a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette after a taking performance in the 7 1/2-furlong debutantes' heat. The eventual winner broke in mid division and found a rhythm in rear through halfway. Nudged along in traffic once into the home straight, she quickened into contention approaching the final furlong and went through an array of gears in the closing stages to easily outpoint Subahiyah (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) by more than the winning margin of 3/4-of-a-length would imply.

“She has a lovely attitude, but was slightly green through the race and certainly has more to learn,” said winning rider Mickael Barzalona. “She really impressed me with the manner in which she quickened in the straight. Hopefully, she will improve more and have a big future.”

Raclette is the fourth of five foals and third scorer produced by four-time Grade I heroine Emollient (Empire Maker), herself a half-sister to GI Belmont S. and G1 Florida Derby placegetter Hofburg (Tapit) and GII Hall of Fame S. third Courtier (Pioneerof the Nile). The April-foaled homebred bay, whose dam was bred to Into Mischief this year, is full to a yearling colt and a half to G2 Balanchine S. and G3 Naas Juvenile Fillies Sprint placegetter Peace Charter (GB) (War Front). Raclette's dual stakes-winning third dam Glia (A.P. Indy) is a daughter of MG1SW matriarch Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector).

Son of Quiet Reflection Debuts at The Curragh

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. 1.25 Curragh, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, 7fT
BLUEGRASS (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is the first foal out of the G1 Commonwealth Cup and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) to race for Coolmore, who paid 2.1million gns for her at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Representing the Smith/Magnier/Tabor/Westerberg partnership, the January-foaled colt debuts in the maiden in which Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) sprung to TDN Rising Stardom 12 months ago.

HISTORY (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of two Ballydoyle runners in this Loder Irish EBF Fillies' Race and the one to make her debut, with Ryan Moore understandably opting for her winning stablemate Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the daughter of Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). History was the second highest-priced lot at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 at 2.8million gns, due to the fact that she is the first foal out of the multiple graded-stakes winner Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) who is a full-sister to the high-class G1 Sussex S. hero Mohaather (GB).

 

1.58 Deauville, Debutantes, €27,000, 2yo, c/g, 7 1/2fT
DREAMFLIGHT (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a significant Andre Fabre newcomer at Deauville August which is always such a breeding ground for future luminaries, being a son of the G2 Prix de la Nonette winner and dual GI Diana S. runner-up Dream Peace (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Bought by Lady Bamford for 2.7million gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, she has yet to produce a genuine star but her 3-year-old Guru (GB) (Kingman {GB}) has shown talent and there is time.

 

2.33 Deauville, Debutantes, €27,000, 2yo, f, 7 1/2fT
RACLETTE (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a second Fabre project by the Juddmonte great, this time carrying the same silks as a daughter of the four-times Grade I heroine Emollient (Empire Maker). Among her peers is 3s Race Horse Management's Fall in Love (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), a Hiroo Shimizu-trained half-sister to last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) who at €450,000 was the top-priced filly sold at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale. Jean-Claude Rouget saddles two Al Shaqab representatives headed by Taihah (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}), a daughter of the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Rothschild heroine Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), while Situveux (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) is a Wertheimer homebred trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias who combined with her half-brother, the Yeomanstown Stud resident Shaman (Ire) (Shamardal).

Breeders’ Cup Champ Tarnawa Returns

    The Aga Khan's G1 Prix Vermeille, G1 Prix de l'Opera and GI Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) takes the 2021 flat season up another level on Thursday as she sets foot on a racecourse for the first time since her brilliant success at Keeneland. Bidding to repeat last year's comeback win when handing Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 11 pounds weight-for-age in the G3 Give Thanks S. at Cork last August, the 5-year-old evades a penalty due to the conditions of the 12-furlong G3 Grant Thornton Ballyroan S. at Leopardstown. Trainer Dermot Weld said he believes the homebred may be more in need of her return than 12 months ago. “We're very, very happy with her. The only thing is she's done herself extremely well through the summer and she's just carrying a bit more than I'd like condition-wise for her first run,” he explained. “It worked really successfully for her last year and I thought we'd kind of follow a similar pattern, but possibly because we've had a very, very dry and warm summer in Ireland and the ground has been pretty firm I would have liked to have got a bit more work into her. I'm happy with the filly physically and mentally and I suppose she's bigger and stronger in many ways, but I just want to warn I would like to have her a shade fitter than she is going into the race. Last year I had her very forward and she put up an excellent performance at Cork and won her group race well. She's in great form again this year, but possibly not quite as advanced in her training. It's a long road all the way into November, so we're 'hasting slowly'.”

Tackling Tarnawa is J P McManus's 3-year-old colt Benaud (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who was fourth in the G2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot last time June 16, but to give a sense of context he is the next-best rated in the race and still 19 pounds off her level. The day's other significant black-type event comes at Deauville in the Listed Prix Arqana Prix de Tourgeville, where Godolphin's G3 Autumn S. winner and G1 Futurity Trophy runner-up One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) looks for a confidence boost having finished sixth in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and in the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby and run into Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) when third in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. on Newmarket's July course last time July 8.

O’Brien-Trained Mother Earth Very Game In Prix Rothschild

The Prix Rothschild, a Group 1 race restricted to fillies and mares, and run over one mile on the straight course at La Touques racecourse, kick-started the 2021 Deauville Barrière Meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 3rd. After a superb battle, it was the Irish filly Mother Earth who carried the day at the main expense of the French pair, Sagamiyra and Speak of the Devil. The first four home finished within half a length of each other.

Mother Earth (Zoffany) didn't have the clearest of runs but the 3-year-old filly showed great courage to fend off all comers. Carrying the label of the Coolmore, the international powerhouse, Mother Earth already won the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May, a classic race which seeks to determine the best future breeding prospects. She followed this up with three excellent performances, having finished second in the Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, and third in both the Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes – three very prestigious Group 1 events.

“She's very tough and very consistent,” trainer Aidan O'Brien said of Mother Earth. “Ryan [Moore] gave her a lovely ride and she is very  professional. We are very lucky in France this year, Ioritz [Mendizabal] gave our horses some great rides as did Ryan today and we are very lucky to have some very well bred horses. Mother Earth has a great mind. She travels very well, she settles very well and she quickens very well. She is a very good filly. We think the mile is really her trip as she travels really well. Sometimes, when she goes to the front, she waits a little bit but the mile is her perfect trip, we think, at the moment.

“I don't think she needs a break: she is very professional and she takes her races very well and loves racing. Her races are spaced out nice that far and she has come from her races very well. The Matron or the Moulin could be options, she is on all those races. We will see how she comes from this one before picking the next one. She is very versatile regarding the ground so America could be an option and she was second there last year.”
