Palace Pier Faces Generation Clash at Deauville

Having missed the G1 Sussex S. due to a minor setback, Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is back in the picture as he defends his title in Sunday's G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville. More workmanlike than impressive when last seen in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot June 15, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's TDN Rising Star has a six-pound weight-for-age gift to present to Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and will need to be at his best to contain Jim Bolger's hard-grafting 3-year-old colt miler supreme. Judged on his prior win in the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury May 15, John and Thady Gosden's 4-year-old is the one to beat even allowing for the scintillating G1 St James's Palace S. victory of his Irish challenger. John Gosden is wary of the effects of his recent problem, however. “He had a blood disorder going into Goodwood and it just took a little time to get over it. We're just finding our way back, he's worked well in towards the race but you could do without those issues coming in the middle of the season,” he said of the bay, who bids to become the first since Spinning World to win consecutive renewals in 1997. “He won the Jacques le Marois last year, but it will be different conditions this year. It's dry and warm and it's a small but elite field. Like most horses, I think he just wants good ground, they can show their acceleration on good ground and that is absolutely his favourite.”

Poetic Flare, who also took the May 1 G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, has a definite achilles heel and that is ground slower than good with his defeats this term all on rain-eased going. Brushed aside by Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the Sussex on soft July 28, he destroyed the opposition on good-to-firm in the June 15 St James's Palace and with the sun beating down on Normandy conditions can work in his favour. Gosden has maximum respect for Poetic Flare and added, “He is a huge threat, obviously, I don't think he was entirely in love with the ground at Goodwood but he's a phenomenal horse and has put in such great performances–he's the top three-year-old colt. It's a very smart race but so it should be, it's the top mile race in France.”

Provided the first two run up to their best, it is difficult to see the winner coming from elsewhere especially as last year's runner-up Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) was disappointing when turned over on her belated seasonal bow in the Listed Lyric Fillies' S.  over an extended 10 furlongs at York July 23. Ballydoyle's Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was beaten over four lengths when fifth in the Sussex and his GI Breeders' Cup Mile victory is looking a notch or two below this level.

If there is a chance of upset, it could come from Godolphin's unexposed Midtown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was third on his seasonal return in the seven-furlong G1 Prix Jean Prat here July 11. He may be the pick of the Andre Fabre-trained duo, with Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) looking a touch exposed despite having enjoyed a confidence-boosting success in the G3 Prix Messidor at Chantilly July 18. “This has been the target for Victor Ludorum all year and it is very exciting to see him back over the straight mile at Deauville on good ground,” Godolphin's Lisa-Jane Graffard said. “It's obviously a very competitive group 1 and he will have to be at his very best, but we feel that he is. Andre couldn't be happier with Midtown's progress since the Prix Jean Prat. He has thought an awful lot of the horse since his debut last year and the only question mark is whether he is more effective on softer ground.”

Also on the card are a trio of group 3 contests, with the 10-furlong Prix Gontaut Hong Kong Jockey Club featuring Ecurie Jean-Pierre Barjon's progressive June 27 G2 Gran Premio di Milano winner Wally (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), the 12 1/2-furlong Prix Minerve hosting Ecurie Ama Zingteam's June 20 G1 Prix de Diane third Burgarita (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and the Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin for 2-year-olds over seven furlongs seeing Lars Haase's July 21 Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles winner Best Sixteen (Fr) (Penny's Picnic {Ire}) bid to continue his upward trajectory.

Palace Pier, Poetic Flare To Clash For Breeders’ Cup Mile Berth In Deauville Group 1

The John & Thady Gosden-trained Palace Pier (GB) looks for back-to-back wins in the Group 1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville this Sunday. The winner of this race, which boasts five Group 1 winners, will earn an automatic starting position and fees paid into this year's $2 million Grade 1 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California on Nov. 5-6.

Unbeaten in three starts this season, Palace Pier, a son of Kingman (GB) secured his place in the Grade 1 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile on June 15 when capturing the “Win and You're In” Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

After bypassing the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes due to a blood disorder, the 4-year-old will face seven rivals in France, including Mrs. J. S. Bolger's two-time Group 1 winner Poetic Flare (IRE).

Winner of the Group 1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, Poetic Flare was last seen finishing second in the G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes on testing ground on July 28. Trainer Jim Bolger believes his 3-year-old colt will improve from that performance.

“It was the ground at Goodwood,” Bolger said. “The filly [Alcohol Free (IRE)] was very good but it was a sub-par run for him. It was very tacky ground that day. He is so much better on good ground. This horse has all the class in the world, he's very quick, and any sort of a reasonably run race will suit him.”

Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Mrs. A.M. O'Brien's Order of Australia (IRE), the defending G1 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile champion, has been entered by trainer Aidan O'Brien. The 4-year-old son of Australia (GB) finished fifth behind Poetic Flare in the G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes.

The 4-year-old filly Alpine Star (IRE), owned and bred by the Niarchos Family, will seek to go one better than last year. Runner-up behind Palace Pier in 2020, one of three occasions the 2020 Group 1 Coronation Stakes heroine placed second in Group 1 company, Alpine Star returns to Deauville after finishing second in her seasonal debut in the listed British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Fillies' Stakes.

“It's a very good renewal of the race,” said her trainer, Jessica Harrington. “She's in good form and a stronger filly this year. Hopefully, it will be the slow side of good. Shane Foley takes the ride and I hope she will run a big race.”

Andre Fabre has won the Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois more than any other trainer in its history with seven victories. He has entered the Godolphin-owned Victor Ludorum (GB) and Midtown (GB).

Winner of the Group 1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) over course and distance in June 2020, this year Victor Ludorum bounced back from two defeats to win the Group 3 Prix Messidor at Chantilly last time out on July 18. He is joined by his lightly raced stablemate Midtown, a 3-year-old son of Dubawi (IRE) out of a Diktat (GB) mare First City (GB), who was last seen finishing a credible third in only his third start in the Group 1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat.

Group 3 winner Ecrivain (FR), trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias, and British challenger Chindit (IRE), trained by Richard Hannon, complete the field.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois winner to start in the G1 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile, which will be run at a mile on the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.

My Deauville With Julian Ince of Haras du Logis

As sales-goers return to Deauville in August for the first time in two years, the bloodstock community shares some of their favourite memories of the town. Haras du Logis's Manager Julian Ince shares his thoughts in the latest installment in the series.

TDN: Away from the sale what is the one thing/place you enjoy most when you're in Deauville in August?

JI: Meeting friends and clients, eating out and enjoying the whole sales/after-sales experience.

TDN: Who's your favourite travelling companion(s) for the sales and why?

JI: I would say our Logis team. We try to go out with our team and eat out with our friends and clients together. It's great fun and all our friends, clients and our team get to know each other.

TDN: Never mind tour rules, what's the funniest/most outrageous thing you've seen while there?

JI: Seeing a bunch of breeders, owners, journalists and agents getting their picture taken together in a toilet called the Red Room in a well-known restaurant in town.

France Galop Adds GoingStick To Its Toolbox For Pre-Race Information

In addition to the penetrometer, which remains the reference tool, France Galop is now offering a much greater range of information regarding the going in flat pattern races (Groups 1, 2, 3 and Listed). This new service will be used for the first time in France on Aug. 7 at the Deauville racecourse, during the Deauville Barrière Meeting, which boasts a high number of Group and Listed races.

France Galop has chosen the GoingStick, a device developed by the British technology company TurfTrax. Measurements taken will provide unprecedented data resulting from a method that takes into account the penetration and, what is new, the shear of the turf. In the United Kingdom, publication of GoingStick readings is mandatory for all turf meetings.

The additional data published for major events is in line with international standards and will be of interest to French and international trainers with starters in these pattern races, as well as punters and racecourse groundsmen.

A total of 68 race meetings per year will benefit from this technology.

The British TurfTrax developed technology is an established method used in England, Ireland, Germany, Australia, and Japan. Readings collected at racecourses that use the GoingStick can be found in English and French on https://www.turftrax.co.uk/

Based on the model of the penetrometer, which remains the reference tool at all French racecourses, a series of readings will be taken on the day before the meeting with the GoingStick.

At each point, the GoingStick takes two measurements to produce an overall reading:

1. The bevelled blade is first driven into the track, measuring the amount of force required to push the tip into the ground

2. The device is then pulled back to a 45-degree angle, measuring the energy needed to pull back to an angle of 45 degrees from the ground

The information published during Group and listed races will be assembled on the TurfTrax website, accessible free of charge and without the obligation of creating an account. It will be presented in a detailed chart that will offer a wider range of data.

Tests carried out by France Galop over the past year have shown that ground readings measured with the GoingStick are consistent with that of the penetrometer. One essential difference is that the TurfTrax data is published according to the British scale.

Comparison of the two scales:

Penetrometer scale: The penetrometer scale, which has been in use in France since 1970, has 10 levels. It is expressed in mm and gives an average reading of ground penetration taken at various measuring points across the whole track (each time at 2 and 3 meters from the rail): at each measuring point, a weight of 1kg is dropped 3 times from a height of 1m along the penetrometer, which falls onto a 1cm² rod. The penetrometer then reads the depth to which the rod has sunk.

TurfTrax GoingStick scale: The GoingStick scale, which is also based on measurements taken along the track, is based on resistance. The greater the resistance, the firmer the ground, and vice versa. This scale has 7 levels. However, the British do not have a description for “very soft” or “holding” ground, but go straight from “soft” to “heavy.”

Information is published on the TurfTrax website (https://www.turftrax.co.uk/) in an identical manner to the penetrometer readings published on the France Galop website, namely:

– Entries at 10:00 am
– Final declarations at 10:00 am
– Pre-race race meeting before 10 am
– Race day at 10:00 am

GoingStick ground readings will be available on the Turftrax website and will be presented in form of a map showing the layout of the track. Where appropriate, different colors may be used to show any differences in ground conditions from one area to another.
