Arqana Series Prize-Money For Juvenile Races Rises to €1.5M

Over 300 colts and fillies have been nominated to the first edition of the four-race juvenile Arqana Series, and those fees plus Arqana's €500,000 contribution have increased the total prize-money for the races reserved for Thoroughbreds born in 2021 from €1.2 million to €1.5 million.

A total of €1.36 million will be distributed to the owners and €140,000 will be allocated to the vendors of the winning horses. Prize-money will be dispersed from first to fifth place. The four races will be held on Aug. 17–the €200,000 Arqana Series des Poulains, the €200,000 Arqana Series des Pouliches, and the €320,000 Arqana Series Summer Criterium–and Sept. 30, the 2-year-old finale–the €320,000 Arqana Series Criterium d'Automne.

In 2024, the first edition of the €320,000 Arqana Series for 3 Years, a 2000-metre conditions race for 3-year-olds, will be conducted for the first time that August. For more information on the series and the purse distributions, please click here.

Kodiac’s Good Guess Storms To Jean Prat Success

Reprising his winning performance in Deauville's G3 Prix Djebel in April, Hisaaki Saito's Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Zykina {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) upset some big names with no hint of fluke as he powered to success over the same seven-furlong trip in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat. Sent off at 24-1 having failed to further his claims as an elite runner when sixth in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and second in the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac, the Fabrice Chappet-trained grandson of Cheveley Park's champion Russian Rhythm (Kingmambo) bided his time early under cover among the main group.

Unleashed by Stephane Pasquier to cut down the long-time leader Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong marker, he drew away to beat that filly by three lengths, with the same margin back to his Paul de Moussac conqueror Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) in third. The 7-10 favourite Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) proved a major disappointment, failing to land a blow and finishing a tame seventh as the 2000 Guineas form surprisingly unravelled in spectacular fashion.

“I love this horse,” Pasquier said. “He was good in the Djebel, but he was still immature physically and needed time to mature and grow into himself. The pace was fast which suited me and although I wanted to ride him closer to the pace, he was slow from the gates and in the end I had plenty of time to pick my position. He can shorten up or go further, it doesn't matter to him. He's a genuine group one horse.”

Kept to sprint trips at two, Good Guess was successful on his first two starts at Chantilly before finishing ninth and third on his next starts in this track's G3 Prix de Cabourg in August and Listed Prix Zeddaan in October. There was nothing in the form of the Djebel–where he got the better of Breizh Sky–that suggested he was top-drawer material upped to this trip for the first time and after his uninspiring Poulains effort he was behind Breizh Sky in the Paul de Moussac with no obvious excuse other than he was giving that rival two pounds.

Fabrice Chappet was not surprised by the outcome and said, “He's always been a good horse who we have liked for a long time. He won the Djebel nicely, missed the break in the Poulains and last time there was no pace which he really needs. That happened for him today and now he'll probably come back here in August for either the Maurice de Gheest or Jacques le Marois.”

The G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Sauterne, whose only poor run had come in the course-and-distance G3 Prix Imprudence, recorded a career-best with another heart-on-her-sleeve performance. After killing off the main British and Irish contingent in Chaldean, Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who all followed her in the five-strong separate group up the centre, she lost out only to the winner who had raced away from her.

Sauterne's trainer Patrice Cottier, who had enjoyed a red-letter day at Saint-Cloud on Saturday as Horizon Dore (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) captured the G2 Prix Eugene Adam, paid tribute to the Marseille-based teak-tough filly who was having her ninth start since debuting in late November. “I'm delighted with the performance–she never runs a bad race and has been so consistent. She's been travelling a lot back and forth, so we'll see how she is after this before deciding on where she goes next.”

Alessandro Botti said of Breizh Sky, “Unfortunately, he was a little too far back and had too much ground to make up, but all things considered put in another excellent performance.”

Pedigree Notes

Good Guess, who was a 420,000gns purchase from the Cheveley Park Stud draft by Chauvigny Global Equine at the 2021 Book 1 Sale, is a half-brother to the operation's Spangled (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who was also at her best over this trip when winning the G3 Sceptre S. He is currently the last known foal out of the dam Zykina (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who also produced the listed-placed sprinter Jumira Bridge (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and is a daughter of the aforementioned G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S., G1 Nassau S. and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Russian Rhythm.

That Cheveley Park luminary's listed-placed Safina (GB) was also by Pivotal and is in turn responsible for last year's G3 Atalanta S. scorer Potapova (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Fred Darling S. winner Marenko (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Russian Rhythm is also the second dam of Pivotal's G3 Princess Elizabeth S. winner Bashkirova (GB) and the fellow group 3 scorer Zonderland (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}). This is the family of the G1 Irish Oaks winner Alydaress (Alydar), the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine and excellent producer Park Appeal (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) with her renowned son Cape Cross (Ire), and of the G1 1000 Guineas-winning champion Shadayid (Shadeed).

Half To Recoletos Debuts At Deauville

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner and sire Recoletos (Fr).

14.33 Deauville, Debutantes, €50,000, 2yo, f, 6fT
MONTE SANCHA (FR) (Frankel {GB}) is a significant member of this valuable Prix de Lisieux, being a full-sister to the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and G1 Prix d'Ispahan-winning sire Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper), the G2 Prix de la Nonette scorer Castellar (Fr) (American Post {GB}) and the listed winner and dual group-placed Ricla (GB) (Adlerflug {Ger}). SARL Darpat France's homebred, who was bought back by their trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias for €480,000 at the 2021 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, unsurprisingly encounters some intriguing peers including Prince Faisal's Teeran (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), an Andre Fabre-trained half-sister to last year's 2000 Guineas fourth Eydon (Ire) (Olden Times {GB}).

13.23 Deauville, Debutantes, €50,000, 2yo, c/g, 6fT
EVADE (FR) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) represents Qatar Racing Limited and Andre Fabre and is a €300,000 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale graduate whose half-siblings include the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Among his rivals is Haras d'Etreham's Vercors (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a Fabrice Chappet-trained half-brother to this year's G1 Ranvet and G1 Queen Elizabeth S. hero Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) who was a 220,000gns Book 1 graduate.

Lope De Vega’s La Filomena Anchors Trade At Arqana

The second and final day of the Arqana Summer Sale featured both breeding stock and horses in training, and it was one of the latter contingent, La Filomena (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) (lot 480), who proved the most expensive at €395,000 on a bid from Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock on behalf of Speriamo Bloodstock's Larry Young.

Offered by Jean-Claude Rouget, who led the way as a vendor during the second day with six sold for a gross of €734,000, the George Kent-bred 3-year-old filly placed at two and has won twice from three starts at three for Peter Brant's White Birch Farm. The full-sister to stakes winner and Group 3-placed Epic Poet (Ire) was also third in the Listed Prix Melisande at ParisLongchamp in June. Under the second dam is three-time Group 1 winner and new Darley stallion Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}).

Boman said of the 210,000gns Tattersalls December foal turned 310,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, “She's a lovely filly with a great pedigree. This type of filly is hard to find. She is lightly raced and has already shown herself at listed level. Her sire is a good stallion and she hails from a great family that we know well as we bought Perfect Power.”

AQPS gelding Jamaico (Fr) (Cokoriko {Fr}) brought €310,000 from Hubert Barbe's Horse Racing Advisory, Thursday's leading buyer, who signed for two lots for a total of €400,000. Consigned by Emmanuel Clayeux, lot 505 has won once over jumps at Auteuil this year and was bred by the Cypres family.

“I've bought him for Caroline Tisdall who has horses in training with David Pipe,” said Barbe. “She really wants to have a good chaser that could run at all the big meetings. He has everything going for him. He made a really nice comeback in a bumper at the beginning of the season and still has a lot of improvement in him. We had to battle a bit to get him, so we are very happy.”

Full Of Shade (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}) (lot 495), another horse from the jumps sphere, went to Pierre Boulard of PB Bloodstock, Harold Kirk and Willie Mullins for €280,000. Consigned by Ballyreddin and Busherstown, the placed 4-year-old filly is a half-sister to graded winner The Reader (Fr) (Lando {Ger}) and listed scorer Vintage (Fr) (Nickname {Fr}).

Boulard said, “She's a lovely mare by No Risk At All, a stallion that we think a lot of. We're really happy with our purchase.”

No Risk At All also featured as the covering sire of lot 290, Sideralis (Fr) (Kapgarde {Fr}), the sale's top-priced broodmare. The Haras de la Vallee-consigned mare went to Jean-Christian Raymond and Thomas Maudet for €145,000.

“Her pedigree speaks for itself,” Raymond said. “She's a daughter of Kapgarde, a very good broodmare sire, and she's in foal to an excellent stallion in No Risk At All. Maurice Rohaut, his son Francois and Jean-Marie Mercier introduced me to Thoroughbreds. She is my eighth mare and I'm very happy.”

The Aga Khan's homebred Hamsiyann (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) (lot 473) caught the eye of Toby Jones for €250,000. Part of the Aga Khan Studs' draft, the son of Harasiya (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) won a 2300-metre race at Tarbes in June in the colours of his breeder, his second victory in six starts. He is from the family of G3 Prix de Guiche winner Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), who was runner-up in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club.

“He'll join Tony Martin in Ireland,” said Toby Jones. “He's a lovely horse and I really liked the way he won on his last start.”

Fabrice Vermeulen's Mqse De Maintenon (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) (lot 487) brought €185,000 from David Hilton and Oakgrove Stud. The dual winner was placed in the Listed Prix des Lilas this term and is a half-sister to the multiple group-placed Shamardal filly Grecian Light (Ire).

“We're delighted,” said Hilton, who manages Oakgrove. “It's a family that we know well and we're very pleased to support it once again. The filly is very talented and I think she still has a lot to offer. We have a good programme for fillies in England and we can't wait to see her race there.”

During Thursday's session, 164 sold of 189 offered (86.7%) for a gross of €5,742,000. The average declined fractionally to €35,012 (-1.8%) and the median rose to €14,000 (+27.3%). For the sale as a whole, 346 sold of 411 through the ring (84.2%) for a gross of €11,833,750. The average was €34,202 (-0.6%) and the median was €20,000 (+25%). Guy Petit was the top buyer by aggregate, with five purchased for a total of €453,000 during the two-day stand. The Channel Consignment filled that same role among the consignors, with 22 sold for a gross of €1,435,000.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “The two days of sales came to a close with very good results across the board. After an exceptional sale last year, it was sustained across all categories with strong demand for the top-of-the-range profiles, such as the historic top price achieved during the stores section yesterday for a son of Zarak (Fr) offered from The Channel Consignment that was bought for €240,000 by Guy Petit. As usual, we would like to extend our warmest thanks to our vendors, as well as to the many buyers who made the trip to Deauville. We will now turn our attention to August, which this year will host the first edition of the Arqana Series on the eve of the August Sale.”
