Jean Prat Surprise As Power’s Laws Of Indices Prevails

Unexposed at this seven-furlong trip and staying on in eye-catching fashion when fifth in the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot June 18, Charlotte Holmes's G2 Railway S. winner Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) benefitted from a masterclass of front-running riding from Olivier Peslier to take Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville. Sent off at 29-1, the Ken Condon-trained bay quickly established a comfortable lead racing up the centre and saw off one by one the threats of the fillies Reina Madre (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Valloria (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the highly-regarded Andre Fabre-trained 31-10 favourite Midtown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) heading to the furlong pole. The last to throw down a challenge was the TDN Rising Star Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and that was the sternest of all, but his compatriot who had beaten him by almost six lengths on livelier ground in last year's G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. just couldn't get past in a frantic finish. At the line, there was a head between the Irish colts, with the previously unbeaten Midtown 1 1/2 lengths away in third justifying Fabre's belief on a tough seasonal introduction. “The trainer left it to me and I said I'd see how the race unfolded, but he was well-placed and I didn't hesitate to go on,” commented Peslier, who was registering a fifth win in the race in which he had enjoyed his first group 1 success on Le Balafre (Fr) (Groom Dancer) in 1993. “I had a lot of confidence in the horse and in me and it really paid off. He was very courageous and I'm delighted, as beforehand it didn't look like he had a chance on form.”

One of the surprise packages among the Irish juveniles last term, Laws of Indices broke his maiden over an extended five furlongs at Navan in June before beating Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) when 66-1 for the six-furlong Railway at The Curragh. Fourth behind that rival in the G1 Phoenix S. over the same course and distance in early August, he was seventh tackling this trip for the first time in that venue's National S. in September and 8 3/4-lengths third behind Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October. Carrying a three-pound penalty on his first two starts this season, he was fifth again at this trip behind Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in the Listed Ballylinch Stud 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown Apr. 11 before reverting to six and finishing a close-up fourth in the G3 Lacken S. at Naas May 16.

Despite finishing well adrift of Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) and Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) at Royal Ascot, there was encouragement in the way Laws of Indices finished off there in testing ground that was hard work for all but especially the closers. This was a significant step forward on his recent efforts, but it was only the second time that forcing tactics were able to be employed on the bargain-basement €8,000 Goffs Autumn Yearling purchase who has had a tendency to get behind in his races and make his life harder than necessary. Perhaps it was the influence of one of France's genuine legends of the saddle, who was the latest to shine on the biggest stage in the year of the veteran jockey. Thunder Moon was bouncing back from two nondescript efforts at a mile and shaped as though this is a maximum trip, showing the same dramatic acceleration that he had at The Curragh last summer despite the preceding rain denting his chance.

Midtown, who was having his first start since winning Chantilly's Listed Prix Herod over this trip in November, was giving connections reason for optimism with his bold showing and Godolphin's Lisa-Jane Graffard commented, “It was a fantastic performance from Midtown and we are delighted with him. He is certainly entitled to come on for his first run in 235 days and we will see how he comes out of this before making any plans.”

Law of Indices is out of fast mare Sampers (Ire) (Exceed and Excel (Aus), a granddaughter of the G2 Prix de Malleret winner Privity (Private Account) who is a full-sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Zindari. from the family of the G1 Irish St Leger hero and sire Leading Counsel. This is also the family of Juddmonte's dual G3 John O'Gaunt S. winner and G1 July Cup runner-up Main Aim (GB) by Power's sire Oasis Dream (GB) and the triple group-winning Weightless (GB) (In the Wings {GB}). Sampers's yearling colt by Starspangledbanner (Aus) was a €80,000 purchase by Troy Steve Bloodstock at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Kingman Filly On Top In the Imprudence

There was another minor upset at Deauville in Thursday as the G3 Prix Imprudence went the way of the 18-1 shot Reina Madre (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Sporting the silks of the Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals and his Yeguada Centurion operation which is set to become a familiar presence in this country, the Mauricio Delcher Sanchez trainee had last been seen finishing fourth in the Premio Gran Criterium in Madrid in October and entered this Classic prep something of an enigma. Settled with two behind early by Christophe Soumillon, the bay who was also runner-up in the Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux in early October stayed on strongly to reel in Sky Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the last 50 metres for a short-neck success, with Louliana (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) 1 1/2 lengths behind in third. “She was a very useful 2-year-old last year and had run a very good race in Bordeaux, but maybe she was a little bit gone in her last race in Madrid,” Delcher Sanchez commented of the bay, who was under the care of Alvaro Soto Loring in 2020. “She's been with me for only three months and I could appreciate the quality in her morning work–she is definitely a very nice filly and everyone can see she hasn't quite blossomed yet, which leads me to think there is room for improvement. It'll most probably be the [G1 Poule d'Essai des] Pouliches [at ParisLongchamp May 16] next.”

Reina Madre, who was bred by Paddy Burns of Loughtown Stud and was the €350,000 topper of the 2018 Goffs November Foal Sale as Pujals flexed his financial muscle, is out of the Fittocks Stud-bred Splashdown (GB) (Falbrav {Ire}) who captured the Listed Ballymacoll Stud Lord Weinstock Memorial S. and was also responsible for the G3 Solario S. winner and G2 Superlative S. runner-up Aktabantay (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). A half-sister to three other stakes performers headed by the Listed Height of Fashion S. winner Cosmodrome (Bahri), she is a relative of the remarkable Bosra Sham (Woodman) and Hector Protector and the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}). Her 2020 filly is by Oasis Dream (GB).

Son Of Iffraaj Best In the Djebel

Sharpened by a return fourth in the 6 1/2-furlong Listed Prix Montenica on Chantilly's Polytrack Mar. 18, Fast Raaj (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}) made that fitness edge count in Thursday's G3 Prix Djebel at Deauville. Racing for a partnership between Ecurie du Parc Monceau, Haras d'Etreham, Riviera Equine S.A.R.L and trainer Yann Barberot, the bay who had won here over 7 1/2 furlongs again on the Polytrack in October was anchored in a share of last off the strong early tempo alongside one of the other colts who had enjoyed an outing in 2021, Godolphin's Pimento (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}). While that rival moved first, Fast Raaj was delivered wide on the track by Gregory Benoist and proved to have the smarter turn of foot to gain the advantage with a furlong remaining. Pressed by the Fabre trainee all the way to the line, the 11-1 shot was always holding him to score by a neck, with the Listed Prix Zeddaan winner Prince Lancelot (GB) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) faring best of the seasonal debutantes three lengths away in third. “This race was his target and I think the race he had last time left him perfect for today,” Barberot said. “He had broken a shade slowly on that occasion and Gregory did not want to give him a hard race as I wanted him in great form for this. He finished very well there and so I was quite confident he would run well today. The strong rhythm in the race helped him and the jockey told me that he was more relaxed behind the gates than he is usually, so I have to be confident he can stay a mile. He'll run next in the [G1 Poule d'Essai des] Poulains [at ParisLongchamp May 16].”

Fast Raaj's dam Interesting (Ire) (Raven's Pass) was runner-up to Penny's Picnic (Ire) (Kheleyf) in the 2012 G3 Prix Eclipse as a juvenile for the Henri-Alex Pantall stable prior to joining Tommy Albertrani with little success. Bought by Haras d'Etreham for €300,000 out of the Godolphin draft at the 2017 Arqana December Mares Sale, she has a 2-year-old filly by the Stud's Almanzor (Fr) to come. A daughter of the G3 Prix de Cabourg scorer and G1 Prix Morny and G1 Prix de la Salamandre runner-up With Fascination (Dayjur) and granddaughter of the GI Santa Susana S., GI Hollywood Oaks and GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Fran's Valentine (Saros {GB}), she is therefore connected to the multiple top-level-winning pair With Anticipation (Relaunch) and Mr Stunning (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).

Rougir Prevails in the Reservoirs

Haras de la Gousserie’s G1 Prix Marcel Boussac placegetter Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) displayed no ill effects after her effort tackling ParisLongchamp’s one-mile strip earlier in the month and knuckled down to register a first stakes success in Tuesday’s G3 Prix des Reservoirs over the same distance at Deauville. The Cedric Rossi trainee had opened up with victories over seven furlongs at Chantilly and Saint-Cloud before dropping to fifth in the Aug. 1 G3 Prix Six Perfections and then running third in a Sept. 1 Lyon-Parilly conditions heat in her penultimate start. The 21-10 favourite was steadied to track the leaders in fourth after breaking smartly in the front rank. Coming under pressure to close soon after passing the quarter-mile pole, she moved into third approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly for continued rousting in the closing stages to claim a career-high win, by a neck from Cirona (GB) (Maxios {GB}), nearing the line. Sky Sister (Fr) (Maxios {GB}) finished another neck further back in third.

“This is an important race for 2-year-old fillies and we were keen to run her again even though it came so soon after the Marcel Boussac,” commented owner’s representative Pauline Chehboub. “She had returned to her base in Marseille, but looked good and fresh so we took a chance with another long journey.” Trainer Cedric Rossi added, “She’s had only one bad race, her third run here in August, but we had not lost our faith because we knew why. We then gave her a confidence boosting run in Lyon as a prep for the Boussac and it worked out perfectly well. She is all class and gave us all the good signs before this race. I am never afraid to run my horses and she concluded her season in the most perfect manner. She will be a nice Classic prospect for next year and is my little champion.”

Rougir, who was originally registered as Lune de Printemps (Fr), is the third of four foals and lone scorer produced by Listed Prix Coronation runner-up Summer Moon (Fr) (Elusive City), herself a daughter of G3 Prix de Royaumont second Kalatuna (Fr) (Green Tune).  The March-foaled chestnut hails from a family featuring MG1SW sire Kahyasi (Ire) (Ile de Bourbon) and is kin to a yearling colt by Recorder (GB).
