Reid: Champion Vequist Sound But Showed Some Mucus After Davona Dale Ninth

Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable and Swilcan Stable's Vequist, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2020, emerged from her ninth-place finish in Saturday's $200,000 Davona Dale (G2) at Gulfstream Park in good order.

First or second in her four starts at 2, including wins in the Spinaway (G1) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), Vequist was making her 3-year-old debut in the one-mile Davona Dale at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

“She came out of it really well,” trainer Robert E. 'Butch' Reid Jr. said Sunday. “We did scope her after the race and she was a little dirty. She had some mucus in there and stuff that we can work with, and I think it definitely affected her performance a little bit. But, soundness-wise, she's great and is happy.”

Wholebodemeister, third in the Jan. 30 Forward Gal (G3) at Gulfstream, shocked the Davona Dale at odds of 52-1, taking over the lead after a half-mile and going to a 6 ½-length triumph. Vequist got bumped at the start and was in range of the leaders racing in mid-pack but never threatened and was eased to the finish by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

“I'm glad Irad took care of her the last part of it when she was hopelessly beaten, so she came back great,” Reid said. “Irad did a great job. He saw that she wasn't really getting there. He gave her a little eighth of a mile to run, but I know she's better than that. We're going to keep looking at her and keep working her and fall back and regroup a little bit, that's all.”

Reid said the connections will continue to monitor Vequist in the coming days before committing to a next start.

“We haven't eliminated anything yet,” Reid said. “It's going to take us a few days to get a bearing on just where we're going to head, but right now she's happy and sound and that's the main thing.”

Collaborate Earns Florida Derby Shot

Three Chimneys Farm and e Five Racing's Collaborate (Into Mischief), tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following his impressive maiden score at Gulfstream Park Saturday, has put himself on track for the Mar. 27 GI Curlin Florida Derby, trainer Saffie Joseph confirmed Sunday.

“The Florida Derby is at home and he just has to walk out of his stall,” Joseph said. “I talked to the owners briefly yesterday and it will probably be between the Florida Derby, the [GII] Wood [at Aqueduct Apr. 3] or the [GII Toyota] Blue Grass [at Keeneland Apr. 3], but the Florida Derby will be the front-runner. Off [Saturday's] race, we're probably going to take a chance somewhere. We feel like he's a Derby horse. I know we're a little behind schedule, but with the ability he has, he can probably overcome it.”

Collaborate was sixth as the beaten favorite in his troubled six-furlong debut in Hallandale Feb. 6. Going one mile Saturday, the colt broke sharply and set a measured pace under jockey Tyler Gaffalione, going in splits of :23.72 seconds, :46.57 and 1:11.12 before beginning to edge away from his 10 rivals. He hit the stretch six lengths in front and kept rolling to win by 12 1/2 and completing the mile in 1:36.35 over a fast main track (video).

“We weren't surprised. That's hard to say with a horse winning like that, but that's the horse we thought he was,” Joseph said.  “The first time out, we got him beat. It hurt to get him beat first time out, because we thought he was that good, but you always have to look at the positive in each scenario and the first time I thought he gained valuable experience.”

While Collaborate has joined the Triple Crown trail, stablemate Drain the Clock (Maclean's Music) will cut back in distance following his runner-up effort in Saturday's GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S.

“Talking to the owners briefly after the race, initially I think we're going to step back and keep him at one turn. We tried it and I think he handled the mile and a sixteenth, but I don't think we're going to try to push it,” Joseph said. “I think we have a really good horse. I feel like we have a Grade I horse and he's probably going to be best at one turn, so most likely we're going to stick to one turn.”

Trainer Butch Reid reported last year's champion juvenile filly Vequist (Nyquist) was doing well following her ninth-place effort in Saturday's GII Davona Dale S.

“We did scope her after the race and she was a little dirty,” Reid said. “She had some mucus in there and stuff that we can work with, and I think it definitely affected her performance a little bit. But, soundness-wise, she's great and is happy.”

Vequist got bumped at the start of the Davona Dale and was in range of the leaders racing in mid-pack, but never threatened and was eased to the finish by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Wholebodemeister Registers $107.60 Shocker In Davona Dale

Sabana Farm's Wholebodemeister rolled to a commanding 6 1/2 -length victory in Saturday's $200,000 Davona Dale (G2) at Gulfstream Park, scoring a 52-1 upset with a dazzling front-running performance.

The Davona Dale, a mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies, was one of nine stakes worth more than $1.4 million on a 14-race program headlined by the $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2), a key prep for the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill n' Dale Farm at Xalapa March 27.

Vequist, the 2020 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly who was sent to post as the 1-2 favorite, made a brief bid on the far turn before fading to ninth in her first start since capturing the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland Nov. 6.

Juan Carlos Avila-trained Wholebodemeister ($107.60) broke alertly to show the way to her 11 rivals while being pressed by Adios Trippi along the backstretch. The daughter of Bodemeister shook off the challenge on the far turn and opened a clear lead that would only lengthen to the finish line under Edgard Zayas. Crazy Beautiful closed to finish second under Robby Albarado, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Competitive Speed and Leonel Reyes.

Wholebodemeister, who had finished third in the Forward Gal (G3) at Gulfstream in her prior start, ran a mile in 1:36.89.

“Last time, it was a troubled trip. She's still learning a lot. I remember last time she was between horses and she didn't like it. The last eighth she found some space and she went through it and only got by a little more than a length. I knew she would be solid if I could keep her in the clear,” Zayas said. “My plan was just to break out of there, put her on the lead and see what she got.”

Wholebodemeister, who may very well have earned a berth in the April 30 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs by earning 50 qualifying points Saturday, is likely to return to action in the $200,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) March 27.

Updated Kentucky Oaks leaderboard

“I'm very happy, very happy. She's ready for the next race,” said Avila through an interpreter. “She's little but she has a big heart. She's super hyper and is difficult to train, but I had a lot of confidence in her because when she breezes, she's really good.”

Wholebodemeister Springs Major Upset in Davona Dale; Vequist Off The Board

Reigning Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly Vequist (Nyquist) was bet like she could not lose her 3-year-old debut in Saturday's GII Davona Dale S. at Gulfstream Park, but she never so much as truly reached contention, as Wholebodemeister (Bodemeister) got loose and brave on the lead and scampered clear to cause a 52-1 boilover. Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) was a bit hesitant to load, but closed off decently for second ahead of 53-1 Competitive Speed (Competitive Edge) in third.

Drawn the fence with Edgard Zayas calling the shots, Wholebodemeister put herself right into the race and set what appeared to be a solid pace from Adios Trippi (Adios Charlie) as Vequist settled one out and one back in the second flight. Wholebodemeister galloped them along comfortably, but Vequist began to find her best stride three wide at the three-eighths and worked her way up to within a couple of lengths of the front-runner. The champ was soon under the bat and clearly in deep waters, but the same could not be said for Wholebodemeister, who widened under a hold with a furlong and a half to travel and wandered about inside the final eighth of a mile, but was never in serious danger. Vequist was not persevered with when clearly beaten and finished ninth of the 10 runners.

A maiden winner from three juvenile appearances, Wholebodemeister was the 4 3/4-length winner of a modestly rated two-lifetime allowance at Gulfstream West Oct. 24 ahead of a never-nearer seventh in Tampa's Sandpiper S. Dec. 5. The homebred was stretching out to the mile for the first time, having made moderate late inroads to be third, beaten under two lengths, in the seven-furlong GIII Forward Gal S. at this venue Jan. 30.

“Last time, it was a troubled trip,” Zayas said. “She's still learning a lot. I remember last time she was between horses and she didn't like it. The last eighth she found some space and she went through it and only got by a little more than a length. I knew she would be solid if I could keep her in the clear. My plan was just to break out of there, put her on the lead and see what she got.”

Pedigree Notes:

Wholebodemeister is the 20th stakes winner and seventh black-type winner for her sire, who now stands stud in Turkey, and she is the 11th stakes winner (sixth graded winner) out of a daughter of the late Scat Daddy.  The bay is out of a Grade III-placed daughter of the SP Carr Shaker (Carr de Naskra), the dam of New York-bred GSW Dewars Rocks (Big Mukora) and two other state-bred stakes performers. Wholelottashakin was barren to Connect for 2019, but produced a Union Rags filly in 2020 and foaled a colt by Arrogate Feb. 3 of this year.
