First Winner For Massaat

Mickley Stud's first-season sire Massaat (Ire) (by Teofilo {Ire}) had his first winner on Thursday as the Australian Bloodstock acquisition Mascapone (GB) prevailed at Chelmsford. Not seen since finishing fourth in Doncaster's Brocklesby Mar. 26, the 7-4 favourite was anchored in rear early by Jamie Spencer in the opening six-furlong maiden. Delivered to the front with 150 yards remaining, the David Simcock-trained bay asserted to score by 1 1/4 lengths from Lady Lavina (GB) (The Last Lion {Ire}).

Australian Bloodstock's Jamie Lovett, who purchased Mascarpone privately, told TDN Europe, “He comes out of a terrific form race [Brocklesby S.] first time out. My partner, Luke Murrell, rated the race as one of the highest 2-year-old races in some time, and we feel he will be best when he gets out to a mile and could be quite smart with time. He's certainly in great hands in Simcock and Spencer.” The winner is currently the last known foal out of a granddaughter of the distinguished Lunda (Ire) (Soviet Star). She is therefore linked to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), the G2 Richmond S. and G2 July S.-winning sire Mehmas (Ire) and, topically, the dual G1 Coronation Cup hero Warrsan (Ire).

Cash Bound For French Derby

Earle Mack's Cash (Ire) (Shamardal), who ran second in Sandown's Apr. 22 G3 bet365 Classic Trial by only a short head to Juddmonte's Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), will make his next start in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club on June 5, according to Mack's British-based racing manager Anthony Burke. Trained by David Simcock, the colt broke his maiden at first asking going a mile at Newmarket last October. He was withdrawn from the G1 Cazoo Derby field earlier this week.

Burke said, “He goes to the French Derby. We took him out of the English Derby this week as we felt the French Derby would suit him better.

“Whatever he does this year will be a bonus because he is a big horse, with loads of potential. He finished his race off very well at Sandown last time and we felt that Chantilly would suit him better than the hustle and bustle of Epsom.”

Turner Wins After Absence

Hayley Turner rode her first winner of the year-and since returning from a seven-week absence due to injury-at Wolverhampton on Wednesday, and the 39-year-old said she is looking forward to celebrating more victories in 2022 and to riding in the International Jockeys Challenge in Saudi Arabia at the end of February.

“I broke my thumb which sidelined me for seven weeks, so it was nice to get back with a winner,” said Turner. “It was a bit frustrating–I'd pulled up on one of David Simcock's horses after the line and he just fell over. It was just one of those unlucky things. But it was nice to have a good break and I'm happy to be riding again now. It was good to ride a winner and get off the mark.”

Turner's return victory was also aboard a Simcock horse, the 4-year-old gelding Race Card (GB) (Kingman {GB}). Turner, who is a multiple winner of the Silver Saddle award at Ascot's Shergar Cup, said she is looking forward to another jockeys' competition.

“I like these jockeys' challenges, and riding at the Saudi Cup meeting will be a great experience,” she said. “I don't really make massive plans–I just try to ride as many winners as I can, really. I feel I have plenty of support from some good trainers and am looking forward to the rest of the all-weather season and the new Flat season.”

Fast Company’s Light Infantry Wins The Horris Hill

David Simcock has an above-average crop of juveniles this term and the Never Say Die Partnership's Light Infantry (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) provided a further boost to the stable with success in the G3 Virgin Bet Horris Hill S. at Newbury on Saturday. Off the mark by 6 1/2 lengths in a six-furlong Yarmouth novice Sept. 14, the 4-1 shot was held up in rear early tackling this extra furlong by Jamie Spencer racing a touch freely. Gently cajoled into contention as the testing conditions took their toll on the clear leader Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), the chestnut worked his way to the front with 150 yards remaining and despite being notably green late on asserted to score by 1 1/2 lengths from Cresta (Fr) (New Bay {GB}). Tacarib Bay (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), who was hampered by the winner's drift right away from Spencer's whip, was half a length behind in third.

“It's good to have one of his potential again,” Simcock said. “He is a good-actioned horse and got away with the ground today–he's done very well to sustain his challenge, but it shows he's got a good engine. He could for a Guineas trial in the spring and then we'll look at one of the Guineas.”

Light Infantry is out of the Austrian champion older mare Lights On Me (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), who is kin to the Listed Pomfret S. winner Choose Your Moment (GB) (Choisir {Aus}) and the Listed Warwickshire Oaks runner-up Dragonera (GB) (Doyen {Ire}). This is the family of the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis hero Elliptique (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris-winning sire Marjorien (GB) and the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Americain (Dynaformer). Also connected to this year's G3 Prix Eclipse winner Top Gear (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Lights On Me's yearling colt is by Anodin (Ire).
