Roaring Lion’s Lion Of War A New TDN Rising Star at Newcastle

Qatar Racing's 2-year-old colt Lion of War (GB) (Roaring Lion) became the first scorer from the lone crop of his ill-fated sire (by Kitten's Joy), when graduating in his June 11 debut going seven furlongs at Leicester last time, and notched another notable first when becoming a TDN Rising Star with a 10-length rout in Thursday's Pertemps Riverside Restricted Novice S. over much the same distance at Newcastle. The 8-11 favourite, burdened with a seven-pound penalty, was swiftly into stride and raced under a firm hold on the front end from flagfall here. Bounding clear of toiling rivals approaching the quarter-mile marker, he extended his advantage under urging and geared down from the furlong pole, easing to almost a walk across the line, to outclass Henzar (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) by daylight in taking fashion.

Lion of War is the latest of three foals and lone scorer out of Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial third Momentus (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself a half-sister to stakes-winning G2 Joel S. runner-up Sir John Lavery (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam Race For The Stars (Fusaichi Pegasus), who annexed the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack Fillies S., is kin to four black-type performers–headed by MG1SW sire Hawk Wing (Woodman)–out of GSW Canadian champion La Lorgnette (Val de l'Orne {Fr}). Race For The Stars is also kin to the stakes-winning Alexandrina (Conquistador Cielo), whose two black-type performers include GI Canadian International S.-winning Canadian Horse of the Year Thornfield (Sky Classic).

Redvers: ‘Haziya our Best Chance but Mangoustine the one we Want Most’

David Redvers, racing manager for Qatar Racing, has put forward Wednesday's Kensington Palace S. favourite Haziya (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) as being Sheikh Fahad's best chance of having a winner at Royal Ascot, but revealed the week will be defined by how G1 French 1000 Guineas heroine Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) performs in the G1 Coronation S. on Friday.

Mangoustine carried former NBA star Tony Parker's black and white silks to victory in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp last month and Redvers, who bought the filly as a yearling for just €46,000, is looking forward to seeing how she performs later in the week.

Along with Parker, the Mikel Delzangles-trained Mangoustine is owned by Monceaux Stud and Qatar Racing and, despite being available at odds as big as 10-1, she is expected to put up a bold show in what is shaping up to be one of the races of the week.

Redvers said, “It could be one of the races of the week. If the ground gets very quick, perhaps it will cut up a little, as there is a lot of talk that the Irish Guineas winner [Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB})] won't run if the ground is too fast. It's a hell of a contest.”

He added, “We bought Zotilla (Zamindar), the dam of Mangoustine, in partnership with Lordship Stud and Monceaux at the Arqana December Sale in 2014. She was a lovely mare, very athletic, and possibly a little bit hot temperment-wise, but she had the most amazing action.

“We then sold her because Henri [Bozo]'s model for Monceaux is a good one in that, if they [mares] are not producing winners, he just outs them. That's why Zotilla was sold.

“But this filly [Mangoustine] was an absolute beauty and we decided to buy her back up to a certain level because we had to buy out Lordship Stud who weren't interested in racing her.

“We bought out Lordship and Henri made a deal with [trainer] Frederic Rossi. Shortly after that, it was decided to bring in Tony Parker as a partner, because the filly was so nice and everyone is so keen for his operation to have a good horse. It all worked quite well.”

To say it has worked well is an understatement. Parker, one of the most successful basketball players of the modern era, brings a new fanbase to the sport and the decision to put him into Mangoustine has proved an inspired one.

Redvers said, “It's been great. Nobody can ever imagine the way these things will work out and we'd all be lying if we knew we were steering Tony into a Guineas winner. We knew she was a lovely filly with a proper pedigree and by a proper sire. She's a hugely exciting race filly and equally exciting broodmare prospect.”

Moungoustine was moved to Mikel Delzangles earlier this year after her previous trainer, Frederic Rossi, lost his licence. Delzangles, best known in Britain for his exploits with G1 2000 Guineas winner Makfi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), endured a period in the wilderness but Mangoustine's Guineas win represented a new dawn for the yard.

Redvers said, “It's well documented that Frederic lost his licence and we needed to find another trainer. Luckily, everyone agreed on Mikel, as he had done an amazing job for us in the past so luckily it has all come full circle.

“By his own admission, he was in the doldrums for a little while, but it's fantastic to see him back. Not only is he a master trainer, he's also a complete gentleman, and we really felt for him during the period when his horses weren't terribly healthy.”

He added, “Whatever problem held them back before, they seem to be over that, and it's great to see Mikel back to his glory days. It's wonderful to see all of his horses running well again and we're looking forward to Mangoustine this week.”

Mangoustine may be the one that matters most but, according to Redvers, the Joseph O'Brien-trained Haziya is Qatar Racing's best chance of a winner this week.

He said, “We were looking at horses who had serious chances in some of the races and she stood out. I've got to say, she was a shrewd acquisition by Joseph in November [cost just €36,000 at Goffs] so hopefully she might win. She is probably our best chance of a winner for the entire week.”

On the rest of their team, Redvers said, “Emotion (GB) (Frankel {GB}) runs in the G2 Queen's Vase. She's a homebred who won by half the track at Kempton. She got found slightly wanting at Goodwood, where she didn't really handle the conditions, but Ascot will play to her strengths.

“We're partners in Silencer (Ire) (Kessaar {Ire}), who is a breeze-up horse we bought with James Harron. Hopefully he'll be able to give the Australians a bit of fun in the Windsor Castle. Friday is really our big day with Mangoustine. She's the one we're all really excited about.”

Tenebrism Tops 16 in 1000 Guineas

Undefeated Tenebrism (Caravaggio) is the 11-4 early choice among 16 confirmations for Sunday's Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Long-time ante-post favourite Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was ruled out of the fillies' Classic Sunday. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine will attempt to give the trainer his sixth win in the race in seven years. O'Brien may also be represented by maiden winners Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Included among Irish-breds who are also possible to run Sunday are Group 3 winner Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and G1 Moyglare Stud S. victress Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), a full-sister to Irish 1000 Guineas scorer Alpha Centuri, also trained by Jessica Harrington. Homeless Song, tackling a mile for the first time, may sidestep Sunday's race in favor of the French equivalent May 15. However, one likely to favour of staying local rather than a trip to ParisLongchamp is G3 Fred Darling S. winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is Godolphin's sole representative in the race.

Represented by his first Classic runner, James Ferguson is on course to saddle G3 Prestige S. scorer Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), fourth in the Fillies' Mile over the 1000 Guineas track and trip, before running down the field when making the trip to Del Mar for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

David Redvers, racing manager for Qatar Racing, who own the filly, explained, “She was possibly unlucky not to finish second at Newmarket. If she finished second, she would be among favouritism at the moment.”

“The race didn't work out at all for her in the Breeders' Cup. She was poorly drawn, went forward, was pushed wide and the whole thing was a non-event.”

Mise En Scene, currently an 11-1 chance with Coral for the Guineas, will be reunited with Cieren Fallon.

“Oisin Murphy rode her in a piece of work on Tuesday morning and was delighted with her,” he said. “She seems to have come forward very well. She hardly blew a candle out afterwards and didn't get out of second gear, apparently,” added Redvers.

“We know she handles Newmarket and a straight mile should not provoke any problems at all. You never know until fillies run how they are going to go.”

“Physically and mentally, she has appeared to have done extremely well and we can only hope and keep our fingers crossed that she gets a bit of luck in running and proves how good she is.”

Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), runner-up on Breeders' Cup day last fall, bested Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) when they met in Deauville's G3 Prix Imprudence on heavy ground last month and the duo could meet again. Tom Marquand gets the call on the latter.

Also included in the Classic lineup are G3 Nell Gwyn S. heroine Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), who bids to give trainer George Boughey his first Classic success, Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), and recent maiden winner Ameynah (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).

Malavath Camp Opts For English 1000 Guineas Over French Equivalent

After a pair of defections, one the high-profile Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday week is the confirmed next target for Group 2 winner Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Tweenhills Stud's David Redvers co-owns the filly under the Everest Racing banner and said, “She is on course for the 1000 Guineas, although it is a nervous week running up to it. If there was any doubt about running at Newmarket before, the Inspiral news would have dispelled it completely.

“She won the Prix Imprudence, which is the French Guineas trial, and according to her trainer she has come on significantly for that run, is in the peak of health and we just hope she can spend this last week incident-free and arrive at Newmarket in the form she is currently in at home.”

A progressive type that has never been off the board in six starts, Malavath won a Chantilly conditions heat in September before a score in the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte one month later. Shipped to California for Del Mar's Breeders' Cup meeting, the Francis-Henri Graffard charge was only a half-length behind Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 5. She resumed with a 1 1/2-length tally in the Prix Imprudence on Apr. 7.

“She won the Prix Impudence on heavy ground, there is no getting away from that, but she also ran in the Breeders' Cup on fast ground,” he added. “We always felt she would be inconvenienced by heavy ground and we were very worried about running her before that in the Criterium de Maison-Laffitte in very soft ground [which she won].

“One of the things that makes her particularly interesting is she seems to have an extraordinary ability to handle any conditions and a temperament that most trainers would die for.”

“The Breeders' Cup was firm ground, although it is a very different thing running on the Rowley Mile to running round a bend at Del Mar,” he said. “There are pedigree question marks surrounding the sire rather than anything else. But she is one of the few with a genuinely steep climb in her form figures and she seems to have improved again.

“Francis is extremely positive about her chance and never questioned running at Newmarket. I thought the obvious bet would be to go to the [G1] Poule d'Essai des Pouliches [on May 15], but he has always been adamant that this is where she is coming–he thinks she is as good as there is, and wants to prove it.”
