Phoenix on the Docket For Go Bears Go

Saturday's G2 Railway S. hero Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) will be pointed to the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. at The Curragh on Aug. 8. Owned by Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing Limited and P. Waney, Go Bears Go broke his maiden at Ascot on May 8 and was a close second in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot on June 17.

“We were obviously thrilled with the horse, especially after going so close at Royal Ascot,” said trainer David Loughnane.

“We've got six weeks until the Phoenix and I think that's where we'll go. He's had a busy 10 days now, so we'll give him a quiet couple of weeks and then we've got three and a half to four weeks to get him ready for the Phoenix. That's the most logical step, I think.”

Kodi Bear’s Go Bears Go Wins the Railway

Runner-up in a gruelling renewal of the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot last Thursday, Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) demonstrated his toughness to back up quickly and edge out the G3 Marble Hill S. first and second Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Masseto (GB) (Territories {Ire}) in a strong edition of The Curragh's G2 GAIN Railway S. on Saturday. Shadowing the leader The Acropolis (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in second throughout, the 17-2 shot who sported the Amo Racing silks was in front two out and refused to buckle from there under Rossa Ryan as he registered a 1 1/4-length success from Castle Star, with the same margin back to Masseto in third. TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was a neck away in fourth.

Successful from the front on debut over five furlongs at Ascot May 8, Go Bears Go was the winner on his side as the stand's-side runner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) swooped late in the Norfolk, so he has yet to be beaten when directly engaged in a race. Rossa Ryan was understandably delighted to mark his return from recent injury with the high-profile win. “He ran a super race in the Norfolk–he was just the wrong side,” he said. “We were so positive that he'd stay six furlongs and it was a big toss-up before Ascot between the Norfolk and the Coventry. Dave [Loughnane] took a massive risk coming here a week later, so we're glad it's paid off. He's a top-class sprinter in the making, I think. He's got the best attitude and a big up to Robson Aguiar and his team, who did prep this lad for the breeze-ups and they prep a good few of our yearlings. They did a fantastic job with him. To David Loughnane and all his team, they've been rock-solid. I have the easy job of steering them and I can only say thanks to everybody. I have to give a massive thanks to my boss Kia [Joorabchian] and everyone at Amo Racing, because they had the faith in me to get back on these on such a big weekend and do it.”

Go Bears Go is the last known foal out of In Dubai (Giant's Causeway), a daughter of Bahr (GB) (Generous {Ire}) who captured the G2 Ribblesdale S. and G3 Musidora S. and was runner-up in the G1 Epsom Oaks and third in the G1 Irish Oaks. She was responsible for the G1 Prix de l'Opera and GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Nahrain (GB) (Selkirk), who in turn produced the G1 Dubai Turf, G1 Caulfield S. and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis hero Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Bahr is also the ancestress of the G3 Palace House S. winner Far Above (Ire) (Farhh {GB}).

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Berth On The Line In Friday’s Shadwell Rockfel Stakes

Ms. Susan Lynas' Santosha (IRE) will bid to get her season back on track in Friday's Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket. She is one of five 2-year-old fillies in the 7-furlong contest, which offers a guaranteed fees-paid berth into the US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) as part of the ”Win and You're In” international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge is a series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into corresponding races of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 6-7.

Santosha provided young trainer David Loughnane with the biggest win of his career when landing the Princess Margaret Stakes (G3) at Ascot in July and Loughnane believes her latest run, an eighth-place finish in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (G2) on Aug. 20, can be ignored.

Loughnane said: “The Lowther was just one race too many for her. She got very wound up in the paddock before and then fell asleep a bit in the stalls and missed the kick. She has had a nice break since York. We feel that she has every right to be here and hopefully we can get her season back on track.”

When asked whether Santosha could head to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Loughnane said: “Every race is on the table for her but we'll take it one race at a time. We certainly wouldn't turn our noses up at the Breeders' Cup if it was the right option for her.”

Aidan O'Brien has won the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes three times in his career, most recently with Just Wonderful, who won the 2018 renewal before going on to finish fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs. He relies on Ballylynch Stud/Irish EBF Ingabelle Stakes listed winner Monday, bred in Kentucky by Chelston, Orpendale & Wynatt, in Friday's contest. Monday is the first foal out of Group 1-winning juvenile Ballydoyle (IRE). She will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

Isabella Giles (IRE), a 7-length winner of the Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes (G3) at Goodwood last time, has won three of her four career starts, with her only defeat coming at the hands of Santosha in the Princess Margaret Stakes. She is trained by Clive Cox and will be ridden by Adam Kirby.

Last year's Rockfel winner, Daahyeh (GB), went on to finish second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. Her trainer Roger Varian, saddles Nazuna (IRE), a Kodiac (GB) filly who was second on her latest start at Doncaster.

The field is completed by Alba Rose (GB), a decisive winner of a novice stakes race over 7-furlongs at Thirsk. Mark Johnston trains the daughter of Muhaarar (GB), who will once again be ridden by Joe Fanning.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winner of the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will be run at 1-mile over the Keeneland turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must already be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 26 to receive the rewards.

Rockfel Next Step for Santosha

Group winner Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}), who won the July 26 G3 Princess Margaret S. at Ascot, is targeting the G2 Rockfel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 25. A winner at first asking at Lingfield, the David Loughnane trainee ran third in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. in early July, and was unplaced in the Aug. 20 G2 Lowther S. after a slow beginning.

“I think the whole experience of York just got to her and blew her brains a bit,” said Loughnane. “Just with the walk across the track from the stables, stuff like that can get to some horses and unfortunately she got worked up beforehand and blew the start.

“She actually did very well to finish where she did, but we’re going to freshen her up now for a couple of weeks before we bring her back in September for the Rockfel–it’s between that or the G1 Cheveley Park S. [on Sept. 26], but I think it will be the Rockfel. The Lowther looked right for her, but these things happen. She’s still the same filly she was, her form all stacks up.”
