Walter Rodriguez Rides First Winner at Laurel

Walter Rodriguez, a 24-year-old native of El Salvador, rode the first winner of his career when he guided Rationalmillennial (Orb)–owned and trained by Jose Corrales–to victory in the sixth race at Laurel Park Sunday.

“I kept looking at the right side to make sure nobody else was coming because I wanted to go around the horse in front of me, and after that I knew I had it,” Rodriguez said. “It's very, very exciting. It's been a lot of hard work and a lot of help from all my friends.”

It was the third lifetime race for the Rodriguez, who rides with a 10-pound weight allowance and had no racing experience when he sought out Corrales more than two years ago.

“He came one day to the track and he said to me, 'I want to be a jockey.' I asked him what he was doing and he told me he was delivering refrigerators,” Corrales said. “Then I asked him if he had ever walked a horse, and he said no. That's where we started.

“In El Salvador, they don't even have a racetrack there,” Corrales added. “I said, 'You have to know how to walk horses. You have to learn everything, how to muck stalls and brush horses and be here early every day,' and he said, 'I'll do whatever it takes.' He worked his way along to where he was jogging horses for me and after that he started galloping horses, and at one time he was galloping all my best horses, my stakes horses. When all his paperwork came through, I took him to get his jockey's license. I told him, 'I'm going to make you famous.'”

Rodriguez made his professional debut June 17 at Laurel, finishing sixth aboard Manklin Creek (Bandbox), co-owned and trained by Corrales.

Corrales won 1,031 races as a jockey between 1981 and 1993 before becoming a trainer, but has continued to mentor prospective riders such as his nephew, Gerardo Corrales, currently tied for ninth in the standings at Churchill Downs, and David Egan. England's champion apprentice of 2017, Egan registered his first North American victory at age 19 on the Corrales-trained Bobby G Mar. 1, 2019 at Laurel. Two years later, Egan captured both the G1 Saudi Cup and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic aboard Mishriff.

“I've been teaching for the last 40 years and that's my passion. That's what I like to do. I love it,” Corrales said. “This kid deserves everything he gets. He learned everything by never giving up. He's a good listener and I'm glad I got him. I think he's going to have great things. He's got a good heart and he takes cares of his grandmother and everything like that. I see a lot of future in this kid.”

Dubawi’s Eldar Eldarov Edges The Queen’s Vase

Wednesday's G2 Queen's Vase was staged over 14 furlongs, but it took a pixel study for the judge to call it as TDN Rising Star Eldar Eldarov (GB) inched out Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) to continue the fine week for Dubawi (Ire). KHK Racing's unbeaten colt had launched his season with a win over 10 furlongs on Newcastle's Tapeta May 24, but Roger Varian had plumped for this staying test of all the options here and ultimately was fully justified as the £480,000 Arqana Breeze Up graduate needed every yard to get in front. Anchored towards the rear of mid-division early by David Egan, the 5-2 favourite had plenty of ground to make up on Zechariah from the top of the straight as Colin Keane struck for home, but his stirring finale saw him take it from that rival on the line. While the official nose margin seemed too vast a measurement, there was a relatively gaping neck back to Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in third as they drew clear of the remainder. “I have never hit the line so strong in a mile and six-furlong race and ended up by the St James's Palace Stakes start,” Egan said. “He was full of running. Stamina is his biggest attribute–we always thought he was a horse who would also like ease in the ground, so there is a lot more to come.”

Roger Varian, who had introduced the winner over an extended mile at Nottingham in October, had also been worried about the fast conditions and commented, “The ground was a concern because Eldar Eldarov is so inexperienced and I thought, on fast ground, he looks like a horse laden with lots of stamina so let's go the distance. There was a lot of chat about him in the winter because he'd won at Nottingham in a similar style to the Derby winner and of course we were excited about him and hoping to get him to a Derby trial, but the horse just didn't thrive in the spring. We went to Newcastle, where I think he was only 90% and that was a strong novice.”

“There is a lot to come from this horse and I think his best days are ahead of him. He put in one hell of a performance and you would think looking down the road that he could develop into a St Leger horse. Even looking to next year, hopefully he can keep improving. I'm delighted for KHK, Sheikh Khalid [ bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa] and everyone involved. They are supporting the industry very strongly, they are supporting me. Days like this are very special to all of us and to get the horse home in front with a lot of expectations is very satisfying.”

Trainer Martyn Meade had to suffer the agony of losing out in the bobber and said of Zechariah, “A mile and six furlongs and you think crikey, I don't need to lose by that! That's racing for you! We have been waiting to run him over this sort of distance and have been building up to this. The betting did not show it, but we had a lot of faith coming into this and he looked as though he'd been well placed at one stage. Today was a bit of an experiment to see if our judgment had been right and he would get the trip. It opens up a whole new array of opportunities. He could have Cup hopes in time. Travelling to Australia could be an option with Aquis involved. They have horses with us to run them here, but he might be better there in time.”

Eldar Eldarov is the third of five foals and the second scorer out of Kirsten Rausing's Listed Prix de Liancourt, Listed Prix Zarkava and Listed Prix de la Pepiniere winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Also responsible for the Listed Rothesay S.-placed A La Voile (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), she is one of five black-type performers produced by the G1 Deutschlandpreis, G1 Rheinland-Pokal and G1 Preis von Europa heroine Albanova (GB) (Alzao), who is a full-sister to the dual G1 Champion S. heroine Alborada (GB) and a half to the dam of Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who brought up her own German group 1 treble last term in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, Grosser Preis von Bayern and Preis von Europa. All At Sea's 2-year-old colt Kingswood (GB) (Roaring Lion) was bought by Glyn Davies for €130,000 at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, while she also has a yearling filly by Study of Man (Ire).

Dubawi’s Eldar Eldarov A New Rising Star at Nottingham

KHK Racing's 2.7-million guineas October Book 1 purchase Akhu Najla (GB) (Kingman {GB}) ran second for Roger Varian in his Leicester unveiling Tuesday and the partnership was back in action with £480,000 Arqana@Doncaster Breeze-Up graduate Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who powered to 'TDN Rising Stardom' in the second division of Wednesday's British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden S. at Nottingham. The 13-8 favourite tanked forward from a slot in rear to track the leaders in fourth after the initial exchanges of this debut and crept closer once into the home straight. Looming large on the bridle soon after passing the three-furlong marker, he assumed control approaching the two pole and stretched clear in impressive fashion to easily account for Janoobi (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) by a geared-down five lengths.

Eldar Eldarov is the third of five foals and second scorer out of Listed Prix de Liancourt, Listed Prix Zarkava and Listed Prix de la Pepiniere winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). He is a half-brother to Listed Rothesay S. third A La Voile (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a yearling colt by Roaring Lion and a weanling filly by Study of Man (Ire). All At Sea is one of five black-type performers produced by G1 Deutschlandpreis, G1 Rheinland-Pokal and G1 Preis von Europa victrix Albanova (GB) (Alzao), herself a full-sister to dual G1 Champion S. heroine Alborada (GB). The February-foaled bay shares his second dam with last month's G1 Preis von Europa winner Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Sea The Stars Colt Lights Up Second Day Of Tattersalls October Book 1

A colt by Sea The Stars was the star turn on the second day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, selling for 1.2 million guineas during a session that saw a clearance rate of 87 percent and turnover of 30,116,000 guineas.

The top lot on the second day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 was the Sea The Stars colt from Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber's Watership Down Stud, who realized 1.2 million guineas to the bid of Charlie Gordon-Watson on behalf of Woodford Racing's Bill Farish. The colt is out of the Dubawi mare So Mi Dar, winner of the Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes and placed in the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera. So Mi Dar is a half-sister to champion 2- and 3-year-old Too Darn Hot and a daughter of Lloyd-Webber's triple Group 1 winning Dar Re Mi, herself a daughter of the farm's foundation mare Darara.

Lady Lloyd-Webber was at Park Paddocks to see her homebred colt sell, and husband Andrew Lloyd-Webber arrived in Newmarket just in time to catch the sale too.

“I got here just in time in a taxi, I just walked in at the 600,000 guineas mark,” laughed Lord Lloyd-Webber.

“We never expected to break the million-guinea barrier, because no one ever does. Maybe Andrew is our lucky omen,” said a delighted Lady Lloyd-Webber. “It is very difficult to do that. The Dar Re Mi family is carrying on, and that is what it is all about from a foundation mare. We are now in the third generation, it is really wonderful to see this family keep going.

“He is a beautiful horse, hopefully he will win the Guineas. And then will carry on winning Group 1s like the rest of the family.”

Purchaser Charlie Gordon-Watson said the purchase was the result of a last-minute phone call.

“Bill Farish rang me just an hour ago and said, 'What about this horse? What do you think?' I told him that I thought he was the best horse I have seen at the sale.

“I know the family backwards, as Bill does, and he is a great friend of Simon Marsh, but he did not want to Simon to know anything about it. Simon had no idea.”

Gordon-Watson added: “It all happened in the last hour and a half. I think I got the valuation right as I told Bill that I thought he'd make between 800,000 guineas and 1.2 million.

“I have been involved in the family all the way through, I bought Darara and this colt is very typical of the family, perhaps a bit bigger because they are all slightly smallish, Darara was quite small. He is a very athletic horse, I have been going on about Lot 277 for a long time.”

Of Farish's plans for his new colt and reasoning behind the purchase, Gordon-Watson said: “Bill liked the pedigree and the mare, everything is so international now. The horse will stay here, and no trainer has been decided as yet.”

Early in the evening the Kingman colt out of the G2 May Hill Stakes winner Turret Rocks became the second lot to breach the million-guinea mark when knocked down to M.V. Magnier for 1.1 million guineas after a bidding war with Anthony Stroud stood alongside David Loder and trainer Charlie Appleby. The colt is the first foal of the Fastnet Rock mare and was consigned by the Egan family's Corduff Stud on behalf of the Andrew & Roseanne O'Grady Walshe's Farmleigh Bloodstock.

Corduff Stud's David Egan was suitably delighted;

“He is a magnificent horse, he really is. I am delighted they bought him, I was not sure they were on him, but they stood up and bought him. It is great.

“This horse was bred by John Corcoran and he bred the horse with Jim Bolger, and bought him out in training. John had a vision of what he wanted to do with the horse, he had a plan and facilitated a way to make it happen. He owned this horse in with his children, Andrew and Roseanne O'Grady Walshe, through Farmleigh Bloodstock.

“She is a beautiful mare, she is by Fastnet Rock, she is big, she is robust, she is strong. She was so honest on the track and John, unfortunately is not with us, but he was very involved in the mating. He chose Kingman, it is great.

“The bidding took a long time, but it got more enjoyable as we went on.”

The colt traces back to the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Riviere d'Or and the family of ten-time Group 1 winner Goldikova.

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues on Thursday, 7th October from 11am with the third and final session.
