Purse Increase at Assiniboia

Effective Monday, July 18, 2022, purses at Assiniboia Downs have been increased across the board. The highlights include a 25% increase in maiden special weight races to $20,000 and a 20% hike for open allowance heats for $24,000 while the new minimum purse for 'open' stakes races has been raised to $40,000.

“Our community of owners, trainers and jockeys continue to be so supportive of the racing program here,” said Darren Dunn, CEO of the Winnipeg, Manitoba-area track. “We are happy to be in a position that we can introduce these increases to the purses. We fully appreciate what it takes to put on a season of competitive racing and we look forward to continuing to work together to deliver the best show we possibly can.”

The track reports better than 60% wagering growth in the furst part of the season. According to a release, competitive racing along with reduced takeouts and the free Player Portal have been attributed to that success.

Assiniboia Downs races nightly Monday through Wednesday. The track stages the Manitoba Derby Aug. 1.

Assiniboia Downs Reschedules Opening Day To May 24

Assiniboia Downs has decided to reschedule the opening day to one week later Monday, May 24, 2021.

The interprovincial travel restrictions and quarantine requirements have resulted in some unexpected travel delays for horsemen that had planned to be ready to race next week.

“There is so much that goes into the opening of the meet so it is disappointing for sure”, said Darren Dunn, the track's CEO.  “However, we felt it was the responsible approach to give it another week to get everyone here safely, following all necessary protocols.  Then we can start the season strong with the first racing program on the Victoria Day Monday.”

The two days that are being re-scheduled along with one additional race day will be added to the end of the racing schedule to offer 51 days of racing as opposed to the initial 50 days currently scheduled.

Assiniboia Downs will be one of the few tracks that will be running in Canada this month.  The 2021 racing schedule will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights with a 7:30 p.m. (Central time) first race post time.

Assiniboia Meet Concludes on a High Note

Assiniboia Downs rounded out its 50-day race meet with total wagering of $63,264,000, eclipsing last year’s $12,467,855 for the same number of days. The 2020 average was $1.265 million per program. A new season wagering record was also set. The previous record was set in 1981 when $53,394,913 was wagered during a 135-day race meet. Additionally, the final day of the meet Sept. 15 offered a double mandatory payout-headed by a carryover of $202,319 for the Jackpot Pick 5 and $81,338 for the Jackpot Hi5.

The total wagering on the program was $3,523,772, the track’s second highest handle.

“The combination of the two pools far exceeded our expectations,” exclaimed Darren Dunn, CEO. “We were fortunate to have a strong program with full fields which set the stage for some big wagering.”

A 20-cent winning Pick 5 ticket paid $1,563.75. A 20-cent winning Hi 5 ticket paid $1,285.50.

Assiniboia Downs is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. for VLTs, dining and simulcasting.

$447,361 In Pick 5 Jackpot For Mandatory Payout Monday At Assiniboia Downs

The $447,361.22 carryover for the Assiniboia Downs Jackpot Pick 5 pool will be paid out on Monday, July 6.

“The stage is set now for the mandatory payout event,” said Darren Dunn, CEO of the Winnipeg, Canada, track.  “Assiniboia Downs has the highest carryover for any pool in North America right now and we are paying it all out on Monday.”

The single winner Jackpot Pick 5 pool has not been won after 18 consecutive racing programs and it is scheduled for a mandatory payout day. A mandatory payout day requires that the entire jackpot and the current day's pool must be paid out to the winners that day. These events draw substantially more wagering as everyone is trying to win their share of the jackpot bonus.

“Players have been chasing the jackpot for weeks now and have been eager to claim a share of that carryover,” said Dunn.  “They know the wagering will be huge on that day, which just adds to the excitement.  This will most likely be a record setting day.”

Estimations for the pool size vary widely but it could possibly exceed $1,000,000 for that one pool.

The Jackpot Pick 5 bet requires the selection of the winners of the last 5 races in the program.  The cost of a ticket is only 20 cents.

Assiniboia Downs racing product is available throughout North America and it is now being broadcast internationally to places such as Australia and Europe.

The Downs also has a Jackpot Hi-5 bet with a carryover now of $63,000. This pool requires the correct selection of the first 5 finishers of the last race of every racing program.

Racing continues every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday through September 15 at 7:30 pm (Central Time).
