Rougir Prevails in the Reservoirs

Haras de la Gousserie’s G1 Prix Marcel Boussac placegetter Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) displayed no ill effects after her effort tackling ParisLongchamp’s one-mile strip earlier in the month and knuckled down to register a first stakes success in Tuesday’s G3 Prix des Reservoirs over the same distance at Deauville. The Cedric Rossi trainee had opened up with victories over seven furlongs at Chantilly and Saint-Cloud before dropping to fifth in the Aug. 1 G3 Prix Six Perfections and then running third in a Sept. 1 Lyon-Parilly conditions heat in her penultimate start. The 21-10 favourite was steadied to track the leaders in fourth after breaking smartly in the front rank. Coming under pressure to close soon after passing the quarter-mile pole, she moved into third approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly for continued rousting in the closing stages to claim a career-high win, by a neck from Cirona (GB) (Maxios {GB}), nearing the line. Sky Sister (Fr) (Maxios {GB}) finished another neck further back in third.

“This is an important race for 2-year-old fillies and we were keen to run her again even though it came so soon after the Marcel Boussac,” commented owner’s representative Pauline Chehboub. “She had returned to her base in Marseille, but looked good and fresh so we took a chance with another long journey.” Trainer Cedric Rossi added, “She’s had only one bad race, her third run here in August, but we had not lost our faith because we knew why. We then gave her a confidence boosting run in Lyon as a prep for the Boussac and it worked out perfectly well. She is all class and gave us all the good signs before this race. I am never afraid to run my horses and she concluded her season in the most perfect manner. She will be a nice Classic prospect for next year and is my little champion.”

Rougir, who was originally registered as Lune de Printemps (Fr), is the third of four foals and lone scorer produced by Listed Prix Coronation runner-up Summer Moon (Fr) (Elusive City), herself a daughter of G3 Prix de Royaumont second Kalatuna (Fr) (Green Tune). The March-foaled chestnut hails from a family featuring MG1SW sire Kahyasi (Ire) (Ile de Bourbon) and is kin to a yearling colt by Recorder (GB).

Ghaiyyath Retired To Kildangan

Four-time Group 1 winner Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}-Nightime {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) has been retired from racing after exhibiting muscle soreness. He will stand at Darley’s Kildangan Stud next year.

Bred by the Weld family’s Springbank Way Stud, Ghaiyyath was a standout from the start being out of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Nightime. He cost Godolphin €1.1-million at the 2015 Goffs November Foal Sale and showed promise soon after joining trainer Charlie Appleby, breaking his maiden at second asking at two before taking the G3 Autumn S. Ghaiyyath ran just once at three, winning the G3 Prix du Prince d’Orange, and after taking the G2 Prix d’Harcourt to kick off his 4-year-old campaign he made waves when winning the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden by 14 lengths. That performance prompted a 2019 G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe bid, but after making the running over the very soft going Ghaiyyath faded to tenth.

The bay put that blip-his only off-the-board finish in 13 starts-firmly behind him this year as a 5-year-old, however. After kicking off proceedings with an 8 1/2-length score in the G3 Dubai Millennium S. in February, he returned to Europe to best last year’s G1 Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Coronation Cup and none other than Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the G1 Coral-Eclipse and Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Juddmonte International. Ghaiyyath was last seen finishing second to Magical in the G1 Irish Champion S. on Sept. 12, and had been set for a bid at the Breeders’ Cup before his setback.

“Ghaiyyath has had a fantastic career winning nine of his 13 races,” said Appleby. “His high-class cruising speed and relentless style of galloping was a joy to watch and as I have said before, this year he came together both physically and mentally and looked the finished article. It is obviously disappointing not to be taking him to the Breeders’ Cup but the exertions of a long season, which started in Dubai in January, were starting to show and the decision has been made to retire him. He was an outstanding part of the Moulton Paddocks team and I know that his numerous top-level successes gave our principal, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, a great deal of pleasure.”

Ghaiyyath is bred on the same Dubawi over Galileo cross that has produced Darley’s exciting young sire Night Of Thunder (Ire). Ghaiyyath’s page was enhanced after his purchase as a foal when his half-sister Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) won a pair of Group 3s in Ireland for Dermot Weld and the GI Man O’ War S. in the U.S. before being bought by Godolphin for 3.7-million gns at Tattersalls December in 2017. Zhukova has yearling and colt foals by Dubawi, while Nightime has a yearling full-brother to Ghaiyyath bought by Godolphin for €1.2-million from Goffs November last year and a colt foal by Kingman (GB) slated to sell at the same sale next month.

Joe Osborne, managing director of Godolphin in Ireland, said, “Ghaiyyath is a great addition to our roster: his superior ability as a racehorse combined with his looks and his pedigree will make him a sought-after option for breeders. We are delighted he will be standing at Kildangan Stud next season.”

Hollie Doyle At The Double in Ascot’s Champions Sprint

Not content to rest on her laurels, rider-of-the-moment Hollie Doyle claimed a career-best success when guiding last month’s G1 Haydock Sprint Cup runner-up Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) to a dramatic success in Saturday’s Qipco British Champions Sprint S. at Ascot. Hambleton Racing Partnership’s veteran chestnut, who had previously claimed a first pattern-race triumph in The Curragh’s Aug. 8 G3 Phoenix Sprint S., broke like greased lightning from the gates and was in command under a tight hold until allowed a measure of rein at halfway. Looking certain to be swamped when a host of rivals threatened from all angles approaching the eighth pole, the 16-1 chance found Doyle at her maximum when fellow old stager and 2016 third Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) gained an edge in the closing stages and rallied gamely in a ding-dong tussle to pluck a nose victory from the jaws of defeat in the final stride. Lael Stable’s One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) finished with her usual gusto to edge Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for third.

“I didn’t think I’d won, so to have had the result we have was incredible and I’m in a state of shock right now,” said a delighted Doyle after securing a first triumph at the highest level. “We had a really good old battle with [G1 July Cup hero and eventual fifth] Oxted from the three-furlong pole and I thought I’d be doing well to hold on like I did, but he is such a game horse. He is incredible and has got quicker with age. When we first got him, he was running over 10 furlongs [for Andre Fabre] in France and didn’t show a whole lot of speed, but the further we dropped him back, the quicker he has got. This isn’t about me, it’s about [trainer] Archie Watson, who has campaigned this horse unbelievably and no one else would have won a Group 1 with this horse. It is a dream come true, a massive dream come true, especially on this horse and everyone in the yard adores him. My aim, at the start of the year, was to ride a Group winner and I always said a Group 1 one day, but I didn’t think it would come this year. I don’t get too carried away, but I’m a bit delusional as to what is going on at the moment as it has all been a bit of a whirlwind.”

Popular veteran Brando, contesting a fifth straight renewal and registering his best effort in this event, rolled back the years and provided a flashback of all his old sparkle in getting to within a pixel of springing an 80-1 shocker. Jockey Tom Eaves enjoyed mixed emotions, but was nonetheless delighted with the performance and said, “You are always gutted finishing second, but he has run a stormer of a race. It was a bob of the heads and I’m delighted, but gutted at the same time. He has been running okay, he ran well [when third in the rescheduled G3 Bengough S.] at York last Saturday and that probably put him right for this. York has never been his sort of track, but he likes it here on this big, stiff track. It is a great training performance.”

Glen Shiel, who is the lone pattern-race scorer for G3 Princess Elizabeth S. victress Gonfilia (Ger) (Big Shuffle), is a full-brother to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Greta Hellstrom (GB) and a half to G3 Sirenia S. placegetter Signs In The Sand (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) . Gonfilia is herself a full-sister to G3 Grosser Preis der Dortmunder Wirtschaft victor and G2 German 2000 Guineas second Gonlargo (Ger) as well as being kin to G1 Deutschland-Preis and G1 Preis von Europa heroine Gonbarda (Ger) (Lando {Ger}). Earthlight Retired To Kildangan

Godolphin’s dual Group 1-winning juvenile Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal-Winters Moon {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}) has been retired from racing and will stand at Kildangan Stud in 2021.

Bred by Godolphin out of its G1 Fillies’ Mile third Winters Moon-a half-sister to two Group 1 winners–Earthlight went unbeaten in five starts last year at two for trainer Andre Fabre. He took the G3 Prix de Cabourg at third asking before reeling off victories in the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S., the latter over subsequent G1 Commonwealth Cup victor Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) and was named France’s champion 2-year-old.

Earthlight won two of his four starts this year at three-the G3 Prix du Pin and Listed Prix Kistena over seven and six furlongs-and bows out after finishing second to One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the G1 Prix de la Foret on Oct. 4.

Sam Bullard, Darley’s director of stallions, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer Earthlight to breeders in Ireland next year. During his unbeaten juvenile campaign, Earthlight’s victories in the G1 Darley Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park were truly outstanding and his champion status at the end of that year was very well deserved.

“The loss of Shamardal in April left a big hole in the roster, but we are confident that his sons, Earthlight and Blue Point, will continue his legacy admirably in Ireland.”
