Victor Ludorum Retired To Logis

Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal-Antiquities {GB}, by Kaldounevees {Fr}), an unbeaten Group 1-winning 2-year-old who trained on to be a Classic winner at three for Godolphin, has been retired from racing and will stand at Haras du Logis in Normandy next year. A fee will be announced at a later date.

Sam Bullard, Darley's director of stallions, said, “Victor Ludorum was a great credit to the Godolphin team–a homebred Classic winner who was exceptional at two. We're delighted to be standing him in France, scene of all his races. He hails from a particularly exceptional stallion-making family and has every chance of being a great stallion son of Shamardal.”

Victor Ludorum started three times at two in the space of five weeks for trainer Andre Fabre and won all three outings culminating in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He trained on to take the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains of 2020 and was third behind Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. He picked up another pattern-race win over a mile this season when taking the G3 Prix Messidor at Chantilly, and was third behind the ascendant Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 Prix du Moulin.

By Darley's own highly successful sire Shamardal, Victor Ludorum is inbred 3×3 to the excellent producer Helen Street (GB) (Troy {GB}), best known as the dam of Street Cry (Ire). Useful young sire Territories (Ire) also appears on the page.

Kheleyf Passes Away at 20

Kheleyf (Green Desert–Society Lady, by Mr. Prospector) has died at Haras des Faunes. He was 20. The news was first reported by the Jour de Galop.

Bred by Darley and a great grandson of bluehen Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer), Kheleyf made his first four starts for the David Loder yard, with a second in the G3 Norfolk S. and a conditions win his best performances. Transferred to Saeed bin Suroor for his 3-year-old year, he won the G3 Jersey S. first out at three and was also third in the G2 Betfair Cup. He retired with a mark of 9-3-1-1 and $136,720 in earnings.

At stud, Kheleyf left 22 stakes winners, seven of them at the group level while standing for Darley in both Ireland and the UK from 2005-2014. Moved to Haras des Faunes in 2015, he covered mares there until his death. His best runners were Group 2 winners Penny's Picnic (Ire) and Sayif (Ire), while the latter was also second in the G1 Middle Park S. Big Time (Ire) and Vladimir/Gold Ball (Ire) (in Hong Kong) were both also Group 1 placed. A full-brother to European champion and dual group winner Bint Allayl (GB) and a half-brother to group winner Laa Rayb (Storm Cat), Kheleyf has five group winners among nine total stakes winners as a broodmare sire. Already, his daughters have produced G1 Prix Jean Prat hero Intellogent (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) and G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who later sold for 2.1 million gns at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares Sale to MV Magnier.

Dubawi’s Modern Games Makes All At Newmarket

Stepping off a 3 1/2-length Doncaster nursery handicap victory earlier this month, Godolphin's 2-year-old colt Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was in command throughout Thursday's G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket and registered another clear-cut success at the expense of Coolmore and Westerberg's French raider Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in his fifth consecutive start at the seven-furlong distance. He had earlier backed up a July 1 debut fifth at Haydock with a July 24 breakthrough score at Newmarket's Summer course and posted an Aug. 8 conditions second to the reopposing Cresta (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) at Leicester in his penultimate outing. The homebred chestnut was swiftly into stride and gained an overall lead on the far side as the six-runner field, reduced from seven by the late scratching of Shadwell's Ribhi (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), split into three distinct groups of two. Coming under pressure when threatened approaching the quarter-mile pole, the 3-1 second choice refused to relinquish his advantage and was ridden out up the hill to comfortably hold the Andre Fabre-trained even-money chalk by 2 1/2 lengths for a career high.

“He's not a big, imposing horse by any stretch and Lorna, who rides him at home, said it would take a good one to beat him,” revealed trainer Charlie Appleby after adding yet more fuel to the juvenile tank. “He did a bit of work on Saturday and, while he didn't surprise us, he worked particularly well. That was always the plan to go out there and make it and get them to come at us. It was a great ride by William [Buick] and it paid off.”

Looking ahead to future engagements, the Moulton Paddocks conditioner added, “He's a neat, little horse and maybe we'll have a look at the Breeders' Cup. He's got plenty of experience under his belt now and I wouldn't quite think of him as a [G1] Dewhurst horse. If you were to put him and [G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. winner] Native Trail together at home, it wouldn't be much of a competition. It would be a shame to run the two of them in the Dewhurst and, if Native Trail wasn't around, we all know this race today is a springboard to a Dewhurst. We've [also] got Albahr for the Breeders' Cup as well and they're two hard-knocking sons of Dubawi who can go to the Breeders' Cup and might just run well over there.”

Modern Games, the fourth of six foals, is one of three scorers and the leading performer produced by a half-sister to G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), G3 Prix Minerve victrix Synopsis (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Epic Similie (GB) (Lomitas {GB}), herself the dam of G2 July S. and G3 Sirenia S. runner-up Figure of Speech (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). His dam Modern Ideals (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) is also kin to the dam of last term's Listed Prix Pelleas second Lackeen (GB) (Shamardal). Descendants of his MGSW third dam Proskona (Mr. Prospector), herself a half-sister to MG1SP sire Keos (Riverman) and G3 Prix Chloe-winning blue hen Korveya (Riverman), include MG1SW sire Act One (GB) (In the Wings {GB}), G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains third Gharir (Ire) (Machiavellian), G1 Fillies' Mile runner-up Summer Symphony (Ire) (Caerleon) and GI Belmont Oaks Invitational third Summer Solo (Arch). The April-foaled homebred chestnut is a half-brother to a yearling filly by Exceed and Excel (Aus) and a weanling filly by Mastercraftsman (Ire).

Walton Street Draws Away To Dominant Victory In Canadian International At Woodbine

Walton Street made his first start in North America a winning one under famed jockey Lanfranco Dettori, winning the Grade 1 Canadian International by 5 3/4 lengths at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. The 7-year-old gelding went into the gate as the favorite, bided his time for ten furlongs, and pulled away in the stretch to earn his first G1 victory in dominant fashion.

Breaking from the second post, Dettori settled Walton Street behind longshot Primo Touch, who got out to a multi-length lead within the first half-mile. Logging fractions of :25, :49.49, and 1:14.37, Primo Touch slowed the pace down, leaving the door open for the field's closers. With a quarter of a mile to go, Walton Street easily took over the lead, entering the stretch on the leading and pulling away to a five-length advantage in the race's final furlong.

At the wire, it was all Dettori and Walton Street, with Desert Encounter second and Primo Touch third.

With his win in the G1 Canadian International, Walton Street has three wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of seven wins in 19 starts and career earnings of $962,153.
