Territories’s Hoo Ya Mal Snags Career-High Win At Goodwood

Acquired by connections for £1.2-million at Goffs' London sale in June, former Andrew Balding-trained G1 Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}–Sensationally {GB}, by Montjeu {Ire}) celebrated a first victory in six starts since annexing York's Convivial Maiden last term with an impressive tally for trainer George Boughey in Saturday's G3 William Hill March S., staged in memory of John Dunlop, at Goodwood. The G1 St Leger, G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Melbourne Cup entry tanked forward to track the tempo in second after the initial exchanges of this 14-furlong marathon. Under wraps until shaken up soon after passing the two pole, the 3-10 favourite quickened to the fore approaching the final furlong and lengthened clear of Perfect Alibi (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) to defeat that pacesetting rival by 2 1/2 lengths in impressive fashion. Animato (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) finished 6 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“The thing we learned was he was stepping up to 14 furlongs, which defies his pedigree,” said George Boughey. “William [Buick] said he's a horse who doesn't feel like he'll stay, but then he does stay. He has that class edge and on ratings he was expected to win, but he didn't do a huge amount today. I just wanted to see him relax and hit the line. It was softer ground and a trip he'd never run over before, so William was delighted and it's good to have ticked a box. It's pretty late at night or early morning in Australia and I'll speak to Gai [Waterhouse] and Adrian [Bott] on the way home. We'll let the dust settle and the [G1 St] Leger is the logical step for him.”

Hoo Ya Mal becomes the second pattern-race winner for his sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the first for Sensationally (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who has six scorers from as many runners to her credit. His second dam, G1 Juddmonte International heroine One So Wonderful (GB) (Nashwan), produced GII San Diego H. victor Sun Boat (GB) (Machaivellian) and is also the second dam of the Group 3 victrix Four White Socks (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Hoo Ya Mal's third dam Someone Special (GB) (Habitat), herself kin to G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. heroine Milligram (GB) (Mill Reef), has four black-type winners of her own headed by G2 Dante S.-winning sire Alnasr Alwasheek (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and G3 Rockfel S. victrix Relatively Special (GB) Alzao). Someone Special is out of G1 1000 Guineas heroine One In A Million (Ire) (Rarity {GB}), whose descendants also include the dual Group 1-winning distaffer Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal). Sensationally has an unraced 2-year-old colt by Mukhadram (GB) and a weanling filly by Belardo (Ire) to come.

Dubawi’s Fairy Cross Makes All For Prestige Triumph

Goldophin's homebred 2-year-old filly Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Devonshire {Ire}, by Fast Company {Ire}), who ran second in last month's Listed Star S. at Sandown, employed enterprising tactics in Saturday's G3 William Hill Prestige S. at Goodwood and was rewarded with a career high in the seven-furlong fillies' test. The 2-1 favourite was swiftly into stride and held sway from the outset. Shaken up when threatened at the quarter-mile marker, she poached a decisive advantage approaching the final furlong and was ridden out to hold Breege (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir) by a length and 3/4-of-a-length in snug fashion.

“I've just spoken to William [Buick], he said she's got plenty of natural pace and I'm delighted with that performance,” said Charlie Appleby of the G2 Rockfel S. and G1 Fillies' Mile entry. “He sees no reason why she won't be able to step up to the mile later on, but she's very comfortable at seven furlongs for the moment. There's no set plans or future targets, but she's a filly that's progressing nicely.”

Fairy Cross becomes the 155th pattern-race winner for her sire (by Dubai Millennium {GB}) and the first for G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. victrix and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Devonshire (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). Freshman Sire Hawkbill Off The Mark At Musselburgh

Alice Haynes trainee Harry's Hero (GB) (Hawkbill–Flora Medici {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}) became the first winner for his Darley Japan freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy) when dominating his rivals in the closing stages of Wednesday's British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden S. over an extended seven furlongs at Musselburgh.

HARRY'S HERO (GB) (c, 2, Hawkbill–Flora Medici {GB}, by Sir Percy {GB}), an Aug. 4 debut third going a shade over six furlongs at Great Yarmouth last time, was well away from an outer gate to chase the leaders in fifth and was left in third after two rivals failed to negotiate the home turn. Sent to the front with three furlongs remaining, the 6-1 chance was urged ever clear inside the final quarter mile before gearing down late to easily outpoint Devil's Kingdom (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) by 2 1/2 lengths, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy). Dubawi’s Rebel’s Romance Celebrates Career High In Germany

Godolphin's 2021 G2 UAE Derby hero Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Minidress {GB}, by Street Cry {Ire}) ended a two-race losing streak with victory in June's Listed Fred Archer S. at Newmarket, adding to his resume in Goodwood's G3 Glorious S. last month, and justified favouritism for a career high in Sunday's G1 Westminster 132nd Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten. The March-foaled gelding, unbeaten on the turf, was positioned in rear with just one rival behind for most of this 12-furlong test. Scrubbed along to reduce arrears off the home turn, the 17-10 pick launched his challenge out wide with 350 metres remaining and stayed on strongly under continued rousting inside the final furlong to hold the late rattle of Nerik (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) by a neck in ultimately snug fashion.

“He had a different start to most of our horses and we initially trained him for the dirt,” explained winning rider James Doyle. “He ended up winning the [G2] UAE Derby and I have to say it seems like he's definitely improved for the switch to turf. He came into today's race relatively unexposed, he'd only had a couple of starts on turf and he's taken to it well. He was a bit boisterous beforehand and I wanted to make sure that he was relaxed properly first. He travelled round pretty smoothly, they didn't go much of a pace and I ended up a little bit further back than ideal. He showed a good kick at the top of the straight and I thought he did a super job there today.”

Rebel's Romance, who becomes the 53rd Group 1 winner for his sire, is the leading performer out of Listed Height Of Fashion S. second Minidress (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}), whose three scorers include Listed Cairn Rouge S. third Petticoat (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}).
