German Freshman Champion Isfahan To Stand At €4,500

Dr Stefan Oschmann, owner of Isfahan (Ger), Germany’s champion first-season sire of 2020, has announced that the son of Lord Of England (Ger) will stand for €4,500 next year.

The winner of the G1 Deutsches Derby in 2016 for Oschmann’s Darius Racing when trained by Andreas Wohler, Isfahan stands at Gestut Ohlerweiherhof. From his 10 first-crop runners he was represented by five winners, including Isfahani (Ger), who landed the G3 Premio Guido Berardelli in Rome on her debut for Henk Grewe.

Dr Oschmann remarked, “It was a very good first season for Isfahan. In addition to being champion first-season sire, he was also leading sire of 2-year-olds by domestic and international winnings of all stallions in Germany.”

He added, “Isfahan was a Derby winner and the focus of his offspring is actually on the Classic campaign for 3-year-olds, so it is very encouraging that he got off to a good start with his 2-year-olds. His sire Lord of England is a stalwart among German stallions and his grandsire Dashing Blade was a multiple champion sire in Germany. Now Isfahan has also won a championship.”

Donjah Skips Arc For Breeders’ Cup

The G1 Preis von Europa winner Donjah (Ger) (Teofilo {Ire}) will miss the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and will be aimed instead towards the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Keeneland.

The 4-year-old, who races for Dr Stefan Oschmann’s Darius Racing, made her most recent start in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, in which she was fourth, finishing less than two lengths behind the winner Barney Roy (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}).

“We had a discussion today and Dr. Oschmann decided that Donjah shouldn’t run in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Instead we are now planning for her to start in the Breeders’ Cup, either in the Filly & Mare Turf or the Turf,” said Darius Racing’s manager Holger Faust.

He added that a contingency plan based on potential COVID-19 travel restrictions could see Donjah remain at home in Germany to make her final start of the year in the Grosser Preis von Bayern in Munich on Nov. 8.

Should Donjah make the trip to America she will become the first Breeders’ Cup contender for 38-year-old Henk Grewe, the reigning champion trainer in Germany. Darius Racing was represented at last year’s meeting at Santa Anita by Alounak (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), who finished fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Donjah’s Long Term Goal is the Arc

German Group 1 winner Donjah (Ger) (Teofilo {Ire}), who won the G1 Preis von Europa at Cologne on Aug. 15, is pointing toward the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as her season finale on Oct. 4. The Darius Racing colourbearer will first step forward in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden on Sept. 13, but trainer Henk Grewe is pleased with how the 4-year-old filly has come out of her latest effort.

“Donjah is a horse apart,” Grewe told the France Galop notes team. “She is fantastic. Our plan is to aim for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She has nothing to lose and everything to win. She has achieved everything that we have asked of her. We would like to her to run in the Grosser Preis von Baden, before heading to the big French race. 2020 is her final year of competition.”

A winner of the G3 Grosser Preis Herzog von Ratibor Rennen as a juvenile, the bay was second in the Grosser Preis von Baden to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), third in the G1 Preis von Europa and successful in Italy’s G2 Gran Premio del Jockey Club at San Siro last term. She was fourth in the G2 Gross Hansa Preis in her 4-year-old bow at Hamburg on July 11.
