Reliable Man Colt Off The Mark in Premio Guido Berardelli

Ardakan (GB) (Reliable Man {GB}) had only faced the starter twice, good for a third in a Sept. 27 Munich seven-furlong affair and a second in a 10-furlong contest at Baden-Baden on Oct. 15, but he managed to break his maiden and earn a first black-type rosette in the G3 Premio Guido Berardelli at Capannelle.

The heavy going did not phase the grey and he perched in a tugging second shortly after the gates flew with Crystal Drake (Ity) (Full Drago {Ity}) leading the vanguard. Positions were largely unchanged as the field exited the turn and began to race up the lengthy stretch and the 5-2 chance had edged up to the leader's flank by the 600-metre mark. Switched off the rail, the Darius Racing colourbearer traded blows with Crystal Drake, before sticking his neck in front at the two pole. It was a cakewalk from there, as Ardakan burst away to win by six good-looking lengths. Crystal Drake stayed on gamely to keep second, a head in front of Wonka Willy (Ire) (Estidhkaar {Ire}), with that pair another four lengths clear of the remainder.

Pedigree Notes
The 17th black-type winner for his sire, Ardakan is also the 11th group winner. Reliable Man's stallion resume also features a trio of Group 1 winners-Miami Bound (NZ), Inspirational Girl (NZ), and Miss Sentimental (NZ)-all in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ardakan is the second stakes winner for German listed winner Alaskakonigin after Listed Diana Trial heroine Alaskasonne (Fr) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). The last known foal out of the gray is the weanling colt Abanos (GB) (Best Solution {Ire}).

German Derby Winner Sisfahan To Breeders’ Cup

Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}), winner of the G1 Deutsches Derby and second to Arc winner Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, will travel to Del Mar for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf.

“Sisfahan should make his next start in the USA,” confirmed Holger Faust, racing manager to the colt's owner Dr Stefan Oschmann of Darius Racing.

“On his last start in Cologne he was [third] behind Alpinista (GB), who beat Torquator Tasso in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, and in Baden-Baden Sisfahan was only one length behind Torquator Tasso, perhaps the best 2400-metre turf horse in the world. So we approach the American trip with optimism and hope for a fast-run race.”

Sisfahan, who hails from the first crop of fellow German Derby winner Isfahan, represents Germany's champion trainer Henk Grewe, who saddled Donjah (Ger) (Teofilo {Ire}) for last year's Breeders' Cup Turf for the same owner.

Classic-Place Isfahani Passes Away

Darius Racing's Group 3 winner Isfahani (Ger) (Isfahan {Ger}–Identity {Ger}, by Manduro {Ger}), who was runner-up in the 2021 G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks), died suddenly on Thursday. An autopsy is pending.

Dr. Stefan Oschmann's Racing Manager Holger Faust said in a statement, “Unfortunately we have to announce that Isfahani passed away suddenly and surprisingly today. We requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. It's very sad, she was Dr. Oschmann's favorite horse.”

Bred by Gestut Karlshof, the chestnut filly was purchased by Faust for €36,000 out of the 2019 BBAG Yearling Sale. Sent to trainer Henk Grewe, she ran second-promoted to first-in the G3 Premio Guido Berardelli in Rome last November. Fourth in the G2 Derby Italiano there on May 23, the daughter of Identity ran fifth in Hamburg's G3 Mehl-Mulhens-Trophy on July 4 prior to her German Oaks second. Her final start was a third in the G2 T. von Zastrow Stutenpreis at Baden-Baden on Sept. 4.

“In the Italian Derby she lost an iron and ran hard, coming out of the race with an injury,” Faust added. “Trainer [Henk] Grewe said we will experience the real Isfahani in the Gran Preis Europa [on Sept. 26], that is not granted to her or us now, but we are grateful to have seen her in the Darius Racing colors on the racetrack.”

The third foal of her winning dam, Isfahani is from the same family as top-class gallopers Irian (Ger) (Tertullian), who won the G2 German 2000 Guineas and was placed at the highest level in Hong Kong, France and Singapore, and Group 3 winner and G1 Preis von Europa runner-up Ibicenco (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}).

Sisfahan Emulates Sire Isfahan In The Deutsches Derby

Following in the steps of his sire Isfahan (Ger), Sisfahan (Fr) came out on top of the cluster of contenders for Sunday's G1 IDEE Deutsches Derby at Hamburg to realise a dream for Darius Racing. Runner-up in the 11-furlong Listed Derby Trial at Dusseldorf May 30, the €20,000 Arqana Autumn Sale purchase was waited with in rear of the pack early by Andrasch Starke from his wide draw. Remaining towards the tail but in touch straightening for home, the Henk Grewe-trained chestnut was sent towards the far rail as Stall Nizza's Alter Adler (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) looked the winner striking for home towards the other side. Getting to the front inside the final 50 yards, the 11-1 shot beat that 10-3 favourite by 1 1/4 lengths to emulate Isfahan's success here five years ago, with the 31-1 outsider Imi (Ger) (Tertullian) 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

Campaigned in France at two, Sisfahan was runner-up over nine furlongs on debut at Lyon-la-Soie in October before going one better at the expense of the useful Fabre runner Saranac (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) over an extra furlong at Lyon-Parilly the following month. Beaten by the re-opposing Aff Un Zo (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}) in the Derby Trial last time, he had progressed notably in the interim and while some will point to the fact that he benefitted from the guile of Starke, the same wide tactics had failed in the G3 Stutenpreis earlier on the card when employed by Theo Bachelot on the favourite Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}). Starke, a genuine legend of the German weighing room whose first success in this came on Robertico (GB) (Robellino) in 1998, was equalling the record of eight victories set by Gerhard Streit from 1938-1961.

Born in Stade near Hamburg, Starke was in ebullient mood. “Hamburg, the king is back!,” he exclaimed. “There is always so much speculation prior to this race, is the starting stall number good or bad, have I made the right choice and so on. I am not excluding myself here, mistakes are always made, but I had confidence in him and chose him. He is such a lightly-raced horse, he ran only once this year when he was second in Dusseldorf where I sent him too early, so I decided to wait longer today and it was absolutely right.”

Grewe was registering a first Derby victory and said, “It is unbelievable and I'm so emotional. I feel so relieved with the pressure to win this race now gone–it is done. It is so nice that Andrasch was on the horse, my whole family is here today and I never even saw where he was positioned in the race, it was only in the final turn that I saw that he was still going strong. He is a great horse and it is an abolute dream today.” Owner Stefan Oschmann added, “Every owner dreams of winning the Derby and for me winning it with a son of Isfahan makes it very special. I was quite hopeful and now we are completely overwhelmed and so happy.”

Sisfahan, who hails from the first crop of his sire, is the only known foal out of the twice-winning Kendalee (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) whose dam Zandalee (Fr) (Trempolino) is a granddaughter of the Raise a Native mare Only a Native. Her other descendants include the GIII Miss Grillo S. winner Maram (Sahm).
