Letter to the Editor: The Triple Crown

Bill Finley (If Baseball Can Change, So Can the Triple Crown, TDN, Tuesday, May 16, 2023) has hit the nail on the head. As one who was and now is again a baseball fan, I agree that baseball's changes have been dramatic and effective. Some traditions are great, but when traditions are barriers to one's existence they need to be rethought.

The truth is that only our sport's diehards would even know the difference if we spread our Triple Crown races out a month apart. The reality is that the general public or the occasional follower couldn't care less whether we changed the timing or not. We are arrogant to think that such a change would make a difference to the point of decreasing interest. On the contrary, at this point in our sport's history, any tradition that decreases the quality of our product and therefore discourages general public interest needs to be abandoned. We no longer have the luxury of being stubborn.

First Foal for Modernist is a Colt

Grade II winner Modernist (Uncle Mo) was represented by his first foal on Sunday, Jan. 15, when the Mineshaft mare Meteoric Matron produced a colt, Darby Dan Farm tweeted. Owned and bred by Bill Johnson's Stonegate Stables, LLC., the new arrival is a New York-bred.

“We're obviously thrilled that the first foal by Modernist is such a good one,” Darby Dan Farm manager Charlie McKinlay said. “This stallion has been very well-received and supported by his shareholders and breeders alike. He's a very well-bred horse from the Wygod family program and comes from really good horses like [champion] Sweet Catomine (Storm Cat) and [Breeders' Cup winner] Life is Sweet (Storm Cat). We're really looking forward to more Modernist foals arriving.”

Modernist, who is out of the unraced Symbolic Gesture (Bernardini), competed for three seasons and earned $576,300 from a career line of 11-3-2-2. He won the 2020 GII Risen Star S. and 2021 GII Excelsior S. and placed in three other graded events.

NYTB Stallion Season Auction Returns in Late Jan.

New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) will conduct its annual Stallion Season Auction from Friday, Jan. 27 to Tuesday, Jan. 31 on www.Wanamakers.com.

The auction raises funds that allow the NYTB to carry on its two-fold mission of promoting New York breeding and racing and protecting the welfare of industry stakeholders.

Attracting donated seasons from farms in the Empire State and Kentucky, the auction has included McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, Sequel New York, Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions, Rockridge Stud, Darley, WinStar Farm, Darby Dan Farm, and Gainesway Farm.

“The benefit of our annual stallion season auction is that it allows participants to find great value on stallions from leading farms in New York, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and elsewhere while helping our mission to protect and enhance the incentives and awards that have made the New York-bred program the strongest regional breeding program in the country,” said New York Thoroughbred Breeders Executive Director Najja Thompson.

New York-bred program stakeholders receive more than $60 million distributed in purse money, incentives, and awards for New York-breds who compete in more than 600 New York-bred races run annually on the New York Racing Association circuit and Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack.

Additionally, there are specific enhanced programs targeted for New York-Sired New York-breds, including the $2.3 million 10-race New York Stallion Stakes Series and the New York-sired owner's bonus programs on the New York Racing Association circuit.

Keeneland Supplements 69 Horses to January Horses of All Ages Sale

A total of 69 horses–including Seasons (Tapit), a Grade I-placed daughter of Tapit and millionaire Winter Memories El Prado (Ire)–have been supplemented to the 2023 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. The auction will cover four sessions from Jan. 9-12.

Additional supplements will be considered until sale date.

Seasons, a 4-year-old filly, is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect and consigned by Darby Dan Farm, agent.

Other supplements to Book 1 of the January Sale include:

Quick (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), a Grade III winner who is carrying her first foal by Medaglia d'Oro. Quick is consigned by Vinery Sales, agent.

A yearling filly from the first crop of GI Belmont S. winner Tiz the Law who is a half-sister to Grade I winner Avenge (War Front) and to Liguria (War Front), winner of the Dec. 3 GIII Jimmy Durante at Del Mar. Out of Lerici (Woodman), she is consigned by Gainesway, agent.

Bold Connection (Uncle Mo), a 2-year-old stakes-placed half-sister to Grade I winner Sweet Loretta (Tapit). Bold Connection is consigned as a racing or broodmare prospect by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

Additional supplements include yearlings by such stallions as Justify, McKinzie, Not This Time, Twirling Candy and Vekoma and mares in foal to stallions including Constitution, Ghostzapper, Good Magic, Justify, Liam's Map, Maclean's Music, Not This Time and Yaupon.

With these supplements, the total number of horses cataloged to the January Sale is 1,578.
