Old Friends Resident Tom’s Ready Dead at Age 10

MGSW Tom's Ready (More Than Ready) was euthanized on Monday, Oct. 30 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, due to complications following colic surgery, Old Friends Farm announced on Tuesday. The 10-year old dark bay stallion was donated to Old Friends by owner Gayle Benson in November of 2020.

The $145,000 Saratoga Select Yearling amassed a career line of 21-5-4-3, $1,036,357 over three seasons and captured the 2016 GII Woody Stephens S. and GIII Ack Ack S., and the 2017 GIII Bold Ruler S. He also placed in six other graded stakes in the care of trainer Dallas Stewart.

“Tom's Ready helped Old Friends a lot,” said Michael Blowen, President and founder of Old Friends. “He was donated by Gayle Benson of GMB Racing, sending a message that a first rate breeding and racing operation trusted us to provide superior retirement and health care for their horse.”

Hoist the Gold Rises to the Occasion in the WAYI Phoenix

Hoist the Gold (Mineshaft) punched his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint with an overdue first graded stakes win in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GII Stoll Keenon Odgen Phoenix S. at Keeneland.

He finished third in the GI Runhappy Malibu S. at Santa Anita last December and second in this year's GI Churchill Downs S. on the Kentucky Derby undercard. He fell just a neck short in this spring's GIII Commonwealth S. in Lexington. Last seen finishing a well-beaten sixth in the GII Pat O'Brien S. Aug. 26 at Del Mar, the Dream Team One Racing homebred was installed as a 6-1 shot here.

Riding the rail, the hooded colt backed off along the backstretch as G1SW Sibelius (Not This Time) and MSW Doctor Oscar (Shackleford) battled for the lead. Fanned three wide around the far turn, the Dallas Stewart trainee took over past the eighth pole and held off his pursuers to take home his first graded stakes win by 3/4 of a length. Nakatomi (Firing Line) was second.

“When you show up with a nice horse and a jock [John Velazquez] that's won five Grade Ones for you, you got a lot of confidence,” Stewart said. “I didn't worry about a thing down the backside. It played out perfect. He got him out. The horse loves this track.”

Pedigree Notes:

Mineshaft, sire of 17 crops of racing age, now has 61 stakes winners and 24 graded stakes winners to his credit. Hoist the Gold is the second to race out of Tacit Approval, who is also responsible for a yearling filly named Anakarina (Vekoma). She foaled a colt by Mucho Macho Man this year. Second dam Punch Appeal (Successful Appeal) is a multiple stakes winner.

Legendary Louisville Basketball Coach Denny Crum Passes Away

Hall of Fame basketball coach Denny Crum, who made a splash when purchasing a horse at the 2021 Keeneland November sale for $825,000, passed away Tuesday at the age of 86. Crum led Louisville to national championships in men's basketball in 1980 and 1986.

His purchase, a colt named Strava (Into Mischief), went on to win two races for Crum, his partners, Siena Farm LLC and WinStar Farm, and trainer Dallas Stewart.

“He's had horses off and on,” Stewart said when asked about Crum's purchase of Strava. “He's got a piece of another 2-year-old. He's been in the game a long time. He knows the ups and the downs. He has won a lot at the buzzer and he has lost a lot at the buzzer, so he knows what's going on.”

Strava's most recent win came just last week when he won a May 4 allowance race at Churchill Downs. He also won an allowance last November 27 at Churchill.

“It's been a long time coming it seems,” Crum told the Churchill Downs media department after the win by Strava in November. “I really liked the way he finished up. Our trainer did a hell of a job.”

Stewart and Crum have success together before Strava came along, most notably with a mare named Nasty Storm (Gulch). She won three graded events and placed in a pair of Grade Is before selling to Frank Stronach for $1.075 million at the 2002 KEENOV sale.

Crum was the head basketball coach at Louisville for 30 years and won 675 out of the 970 games he coached. He guided the team to six Final Four appearances.
