Andthewinneris, Impressive Maiden Winner on Turf, Tries Dirt in Bashford Manor

Susan Moulton's Andthewinneris (Oscar Performance), an impressive debut winner over the turf at Keeneland in April (video), will move to the main track when he makes his second start in the Bashford Manor S. at Churchill Downs July 4. The bay colt had his second work over the Churchill main track Sunday, going four furlongs from the gate in :49.60 (50/95). He worked the same distance in a bullet :46.80 (1/156) June 18.

“There were, and still are, a lot of options we had for him after he broke his maiden,” trainer Wayne Catalano said. “I sent him over here [to Churchill Downs] to see how he'd handle this dirt course and he cruised over this track [June 18]. He worked :46 and change and galloped out really strong. We popped him out of the gate [Sunday] and just let him go easy so he can feel what it's like to break out of the gate on the dirt. He's shown us a lot of promise when he won first out. Susan bred him and he's a really nice-looking colt.”

Andthewinneris is out of Run Like the Boss (Scat Daddy), a mare purchased by Moulton for $30,000 while in foal to Astern (Aus) at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. The mare, in foal to Cupid, resold for $20,000 to Stephen Smith and Denise Jones at last year's Keeneland November sale.

Andthewinneris RNA'd for $67,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September sale, two months before his half-brother by Enticed sold for $42,000 as a weanling at the Keeneland November sale.

Also working at Churchill Downs Sunday, Last Samurai (Malibu Moon) went five furlongs in 1:01.40 (7/17) for new trainer D. Wayne Lukas. The Willis Horton colorbearer, who is pointing towards Saturday's GII Stephen Foster S., will be making his first start since winning the Apr. 23 GII Oaklawn H. for trainer Dallas Stewart.

Well-Bred Uncle Mo Filly Romps to ‘Rising Stardom’

It looks like legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who won the GI Kentucky Oaks this year with Secret Oath (Arrogate), may have another star filly in the making in his barn. The Hall of Famer saddled well-bred juvenile filly Summer Promise (Uncle Mo) to an impressive debut win at Churchill Downs Saturday.

Dispatched as the second choice at 3-1, the $500,000 KEESEP was away well from her rail draw and seized the early advantage as heavy favorite Key of Life (Mo Town) missed the break, trailing the field early. Summer Promise coasted through a :22.95 first quarter with a 28-1shot Danse Macabre (Army Mule) sitting on her flank. Turning for home full of run, the bay rolled home to an effortless five-length victory. Danse Macabre held second and Key of Life rallied for third.

Summer Promise is the 11th 'TDN Rising Star' for her sire Uncle Mo. Her blue hen dam Dream of Summer captured the GI Apple Blossom H. and made nearly $1.2 million before proving to be just as talented in the breeding shed. She is the dam of Grade I-winning sire Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway); Grade I winner Vexatious (Giant's Causeway); and MGSW & GISP stallion Destin (Giant's Causeway).

Following Triple Crown Finale, Saratoga Dates for Belmont Runners

GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) and GI Kentucky Derby Rich Strike (Keen Ice), sixth in Saturday's Belmont, will now be pointed towards the Aug. 27 GI Runhappy Travers S., connections confirmed Sunday morning.

“I haven't really talked to the ownership group about it too much, but both of our Travers winners went through the Jim Dandy,” Mo Donegal's trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday. “So to me, if he has a prep between now and the Travers, that would make the most sense.”

The GII Jim Dandy will be run July 31 at Saratoga.

Nest (Curlin), runner-up in both the GI Kentucky Oaks and the Belmont S., will also have Saratoga targets this summer, Pletcher said.

“I thought she ran great,” Pletcher said of the filly. “We'll target the [Aug. 20 GI] Alabama and decide if we want to target the [July 23 GI] Coaching Club before that or not. I think she solidified what we already felt going into the Kentucky Oaks. Everyone talked about it being one of the deeper Oaks in a while. I think that Nest showed that to be the case yesterday.”

Mo Donegal gave Pletcher his fourth Belmont S. triumph, following 2007 winner Rags to Riches, 2013 winner Palace Malice and 2017 victor Tapwrit. Saturday's win put Pletcher on even terms with his former boss, Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas.

“That's an honor,” Pletcher said of the tie. “I consider him to be the best of all time, so that's pretty cool.”

Eric Reed, trainer of Rich Strike, said the Derby winner exited Saturday's race in fine shape and he is looking forward to cutting back in distance for the 1 1/4-mile Travers.

“We were going there [to the Travers] win, lose or draw,” Reed said. “We're going to give him a little rest and that's a mile and a quarter and there'll be plenty of speed. The track will play to his liking and we'll run another bang-up race. I have no doubt about that. We'll give him three or four easy weeks and then start training him up to the Travers. He'll train in Kentucky and train [at Saratoga] a little.”
